Prof. B. K. Rastogi
ABOUT GANDHINAGAR
The Indian Geophysical Union is dedicated to serve the
society, in general and Geoscientific community in particular,
by bringing all the Earth system scientists on a common
platform to address, assess and suggest solutions for various
challenges faced by the society / industry. In this scenario
the 49th IGU annual convention would focus on energy,
environment and engineering aspects with a view to enhance
and sustain quality of life.
About the Special Theme:
Energy security is paramount for a nation`s growth. To
achieve this, an integrated approach to deliver location
specific solutions that twin the objectives of economic progress
and sustainable integrated development of systems and
resources, is essential. Presently fossil fuels are largely used as
the main energy source. Since indigenous production of fossil
fuels is limited, we are incurring considerably high expenses
in importing oil and natural gas. Such a practice is affecting
the economy of our nation and impending developmental
activities, essential for our society. Efforts are being made to
generate renewable energy resources – Solar energy, Wind
energy, Nuclear energy, Thermal energy, energy from waste
material/bio-mass. However, we need to develop a road map
that can guide us to achieve energy security. Preperation of
such a road map needs concerted effort by different stake
holders. In this context, we need to strengthen our research
base. In this exercise, one has to strengthen the research base
of different branches of Earth system sciences, through a
holistic approach. New strategies need to be evolved to gather
momentum and achieve sustainability. The main objective
in selecting the special theme “Towards energy security –
Exploration, Exploitation and New Strategies” is to invite
the attention of decision makers and institutions in India and
other parts of the world to deliver value added knowledge and
capacities for a wide variety of stake holders. The initiative
is to demonstrate the feasibility of establishing different
energy systems, taking stock of emerging trends to better
understand exploration and exploitation of conventional and
unconventional energy sources, without adversely affecting
our environment. It is our endeavor to provide a platform,
through this convention, to freely exchange ideas that can
help in achieving energy security and there by enhance the
quality of life.
National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), a constituent laboratory
of CSIR, was established in 1961 with the mission to carry out research in
multidisciplinary areas of Earth Sciences. The Institute plays a pivotal role
in the exploration of Hydrocarbons, Mineral and Groundwater resources in
addition to studies in Engineering Geophysics, Seismology, Geo-dynamics
and Geo-environment. The institute has a staff strength of 550 that includes
about 150 qualified scientists doing extensive research in Earth Sciences
assisted by an equal number of highly skilled technical staff for data
acquisition, data processing and field investigations.
ABOUT NGRI
Currently, ISR is involved in Earthquake Monitoring, GPS Monitoring for
Crustal Deformation, Microzonation and Earthquake Prediction Research.
It has established in its new campus Seismic Data Analysis Centre,
Geotechnical Lab., Global Positioning System Lab., Engineering Seismology
Lab., Optically Stimulated Luminescence Lab. for dating of sediments,
Engineering Geophysics Lab., Gravity & Magnetics Lab., Electrical and
Eletromagnetic Lab.
The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) has been established by
the Science and Technology Department, Government of Gujarat. The
ISR has been registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act.
The Governing Council of the Society is chaired by the Hon’ble Chief
Minister, Gujarat State. ISR is the only institute in India fully dedicated
to seismological research and is planned to be developed into a premier
international institute.
ABOUT ISR
PDPU’s various objectives are being addressed by six schools (School
of Petroleum Technology, School of Petroleum Management, School of
Technology, School of Solar Energy, School of Nuclear Energy and School
of Liberal Studies) through a number of specialized and well-planned
undergraduate and post-graduate energy education programmes and
intensive research initiatives. PDPU has also been recognized by UGC as the
State Private University running under the Act of the Gujarat Legislature.
Sabarmati Ashram: Set up in the year 1915, Sabarmati ashram was
the central point from where the struggle for India’s Independence
was started. Till the year 1930, the ashram at Sabarmati was the home
of Mahatma Gandhi. Bordered by shady trees, the atmosphere over
here is very tranquil and peaceful. During the Indian struggle for
independence, it was also referred to as the Satyagrah Ashram.

of Petroleum Technology, School of Petroleum Management, School of
Technology, School of Solar Energy, School of Nuclear Energy and School
of Liberal Studies) through a number of specialized and well-planned
undergraduate and post-graduate energy education programmes and
intensive research initiatives. PDPU has also been recognized by UGC as the
State Private University running under the Act of the Gujarat Legislature.
INDIAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION
49th
Annual Convention
EXHIBITION/STALLS
An Exhibition of Geophysical and Allied instruments will
be organized during the seminar. The exhibition will enable
delegates to gain a comprehensive overview of the products
and services available as well as an opportunity to discuss
the latest developments with representatives from the
major companies serving needs of the exploration industry.
