the past five years as they demonstrated their abilities and
showed a strong commitment to our college and the programs it offers. Our dedicated coaches,
faculty, staff and administration work tirelessly to provide many opportunities for our students to
develop stronger character, leadership and teamwork skills that will serve them in the many fields
in which they will work upon transfer or graduation. All of us at Shasta College recognize and

Mike Davis
Head Trainer
Mike has 30 years of athletic training experience. During his career,
he has worked with professional, college, and high school athletes.
Mike did his undergraduate work at California State University,
Chico and received his Master of Science degree from the University
of Arizona. Mike is certified by the National Athletic Trainers’
Association. His spirit, enthusiasm and wisdom comes from his
wife, Lee and their two children, Cody and Micaela.

Cindy is a very important person to our athletic programs.
She serves as the Compliance
Officer for the College, whose job it is to certify the
eligibility of all of our 330+ student athletes. She is
extremely dedicated to this task, and goes out of her
way to make sure all the athletes receive the attention they need to be eligible to participate. THANK

Starlyn Corley
Administrative Assistant
Starlyn was hired by Shasta
College in 2001. Starlyn enjoys working in the educational
field and is thrilled to be working with Physical Education and Athletics. “It’s
wonderful to be around such a great group of students and instructors. It’s a pleasure to be part of
Shasta College.”
Jay is in his twelfth year as
our full-time Equipment
Technician. He is responsible
for all of the athletic equipment. Jay is a very important part of the Shasta
College support team. Jay’s family includes his wife,
Denise, and his two children, Felicia and Brandon.
This department coordinates the student athletic/
accident insurance program, as well as providing
quality nursing, therapeutic counseling, and medical service to all registered students. Pictured left

Jason Kelly is in his 18th year
as a Counselor and his seventh year at Shasta College.
He has enjoyed being a part of athletics as a college athlete, coach and counselor. After attending
and playing baseball at Shasta College, Jason earned
his Bachelor of Arts degree at California State
Univesrity, Sacramento and his Master of Science
degree from the University of LaVerne. Jason and
his wife, Mandi, have two boys, Dalton and Luke.

Transportation
The Shasta College Athletics Department salutes
the dedicated transportation professionals who
provide the safe and reliable travel for our students
and/or coaches. This group, under the leadership of
John Moore, shows a true care and concern for all
of our sports teams. We are proud to have you as a
part of our athletic family.
Physical Plant
Shasta College is very proud of our fields and
grounds staff. These dedicated professionals are responsible for keeping all of our athletic fields in top
shape. With the challenges of extreme summer heat
and cold winters, the job of preparing the fields for
competition is a very demanding one. The “grounds
crew” is definitely part of our Athletic Department
team. They take great pride in their work and it
shows in everything they do. Pictured from left

Jim Holcomb

Assistant Men’s Coach
Coach Holcomb grew up in
Lookout, California and graduated from Big Valley High
School. After high school, he attended College of
the Siskiyous where he received an AA degree and
played two years of basketball. He then married
and moved to Yreka, California, where he worked
and raised a family. He coached from 1998-1994
at the junior high level, and then took the freshman coaching position at Yreka High where he
coached four years. In 1999, he was hired as the
Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Simpson
University where he was working on finishing
his Bachelor’s Degree (while still living in Yreka).
Coach Holcomb and his family moved to Redding
in 2002 so that he could finish his teaching credentials. Jim coached basketball at Simpson from 19992003. Simpson University is the NAIA II division
as well as NCCAA II in Christian Colleges. In the
2002-2003 season, Simpson had 21 wins, with a
Regional Championship and third place in the
National Tournament in Oklahoma City. In 2003,
Jim was hired as the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach
at Anderson High School. He coached there for
five years where his teams won two league titles and
played two Section title games. Coach Holcomb and
his wife, Jeanette, have been married for 34 years
and have two daughters, Jill and Jennifer. His wife
Jeanette is a Registered Dental Assistant for Shasta
Community Health in Redding. His daughter, Jill
is in the nursing field in Palm Beach, Florida, and
his daughter, Jennifer, is a Deputy Sheriff in Palm
Beach County, Florida. In his spare time Jim likes
to go hunting, spend time outdoors, and most of all
be with his family.
Kele Fitzhugh
Head Coach
Kele Fitzhugh is entering his 16th season with the
Knights. Kele grew up in Grass Valley and graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1981. Kele
then attended Weber State on a basketball scholarship, and later completed his Bachelor’s degree
at CSU-Chico. Coach Fitzhugh started coaching
college basketball in 1987 as a student assistant at
CSU-Chico under Pete Mathieson. After spending
one season as the Men’s Assistant Basketball Coach
at Butte College, Kele returned to CSU-Chico as
the Men’s Head Assistant Coach under “Puck”
Smith. Kele coached at CSU-Chico, until accepting his current position at Shasta College. During
his time at CSU-Chico, the Wildcats captured four
consecutive NCAC championships (1990-1994),
and made three appearances in the NCAA Division
II Western Regional Playoffs. Coach Fitzhugh
had immediate success at Shasta College, winning
G.V.C. Championships in four of his first six years
on the job. Kele and his wife, Karin, have been married for 24 years and have two children, Karle (19)
and Andrew (16). Coach Fitzhugh likes to golf, go
to Shasta Lake, and spend time with friends in his
spare time. Karin is a Physical Education instructor
and coach at Shasta High School.

Sky Nelson brings 20 years
of coaching experience to the
Knights. He hopes his commitment to service translates into success for the young
men in the program both on and off the court.
Sky and his wife, Cheyenne, moved to Redding after 28 years of calling Maui their home. Together
they raised three kids and ran a successful real estate
and development business. Sky was the head coach
of two very different varsity basketball programs
in Maui, one public and one private. His greatest coaching moment was winning the opening
game of the Hawaii State Championship against
Punahou, the defending state champion. It was the
first state tournament victory for Lahainaluna High
School in 43 years. In 2002, he developed a traveling basketball team called the Maui Magic to expose young men to new places and different levels
of competition. That program is in its ninth year.
He also developed the “Maui Christmas Classic,”
a 16-team high school basketball tournament now
in its 15th year. His first exposure to North State
basketball was consulting and assisting at Redding
Christian, and he fondly remembers their Northern
Section Championship. He is enjoying working
with the athletes of Shasta College under Coach
Fitzhugh.

CRITERIA FOR INDUCTION
In order to be inducted into the Shasta College Hall of Fame,
students must meet the following criteria:
1. Must have completed eligibility at Shasta College three or
more years ago.
2. Intercollegiate sports accomplishments at Shasta College
have been significant enough to make the athlete stand
above the crowd.
3. Sports accomplishments in subsequent non-collegiate
competition, professional or amateur.
4. Other outstanding achievements in business, service
to country, community, or Shasta College after sport
competition at Shasta College.
5. Shasta College coaches who may not be Shasta College
graduates, but who have contributed to Shasta College
sports to the extent that their influence has brought
prominence to Shasta College.
6. Nominees who are not selected remain on the selection
prospect list for a period of five (5) years.

2012-13 OUTLOOK
Coach Fitzhugh possesses his usual pre-season optimism for the Knights basketball squad this season. The Knights have four sophomores on the roster, but only three of them have seen any time in
a Shasta College uniform. The team is young, but
Coach Fitzhugh feels that there is a nice mixture
of talent, athletes and cognitive players to create a
strong team chemistry. “The success of the season
will depend on the development of the freshman,
environmentally and athletically”, exclaims Coach
Fitzhugh. There are talented players on the team,
“it is going to come down to their abilities to place
the team goals ahead of their individual goals. If
they can do this, I have high optimism for the season.”
The Knights will have three returning players from
last years squad that include; two starters and AllConference players; 6’0 guard, James Williams
(Enterprise HS) and 5’10 guard, Stevonte Young
(Hayward HS) and one reserve player – 6’3 forward, Anthony Eastman. Anthony broke his hand
last year and missed the majority of the Golden
Valley Conference season.
James Williams and Stevonte Young have a year experience of playing together and it shows. The two
play well together, anticipating each others moves.
Both are competitive individuals that do not like to
loss, which helps drive them to working out hard
with a true focus. James, a tenacious defender, led
the state in steals last season as a freshman. He has
worked hard of his perimeter shooting and is looking forward to his sophomore season.
Stevonte worked hard in the off-season, doing individual workouts to stay on top of his game. His
leadership, at the point guard position, is going to
be critical for the Knights, especially in the pre-season as the younger players develop.
these young players adjust to a new system, and
higher level of competition, will play a big part in
how well the Knights do this season. I know these
individuals are very good players, it is how quickly
they embrace each other and our program that will
determine the consistence of our team.”

Anthony was injured last season at a critical time
of the season. He had establisted himself as the first
forward off the beach. He is coming back to school
in the best condition that Coach Fitzhugh has seen
him. He has increased his strength and stamina, two
qualities that will be needed from him this season.
The newcomers will bring excitement and fun to
the Knights. With several talented individuals,
time will be the test for these upcoming players.

Head Coach Jerry Brown is entering his 23rd year as
a Shasta College basketball coach, 19th as the Lady
Knight’s Head Coach. Coach Brown was named
Northern California Coach of the Year in 2000 for
leading the Knights to a school record 33-4 record.
The Knights had a season in 2000 that will be hard
to duplicate. Most wins ever with 33, undefeated in
the GVC at 10-0, number one ranking in the north,
number two ranking in the state, state tournament
play-off victories against, Fresno City College,
College of the Siskiyous, College of the Canyons,
and San Jose City College. The Knights only flaw
that year was the 71-68 defeat in the state championship game to undefeated Ventura College. Coach
Brown is a Mt. Shasta High School graduate and
a three-time league MVP. He was an All-American
his senior year. Coach Brown then played basketball on a scholarship at San Diego State University.
Jerry was named team captain his senior year at
SDSU. After college Coach Brown played professional basketball in Norway for one year and then
he returned to San Diego to coach both the boys’
and girls’ teams at Mt. Miquel High School. After
staying at Mt. Miguel for three years Coach Brown
then returned to Mt. Shasta and coached there for
four years before coming to Shasta College. Coach
Brown resides in Redding.

Coach Stacy Mizuta joins the
Lady Knights this year for
her fourth season as an assistant coach. As a 1991 graduate from North Valley
Christian High School, she earned League MVP
her junior and Senior Years. She played basketball
here at Shasta College where she earned a spot on
the All-Conference team. She was inducted into the
Hall of Fame in 1996. She coached a varsity basketball at North Valley Christian High School for six
years, receiving Coach of the Year in three of those
six years.

Coach Mizuta has been married 18 years and resides in Redding with her husband and five children.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OUTLOOK 2012-2013
The Lady Knights are coming off a 14-10 record
from a year ago and having a winning season 15
of the last 16 years. The 2012-2013 Knights will
look to contend for the Golden Valley Conference
Championship. In order to do that, the Lady
Knights must find a way to replace three starters
from a year ago. Those players include First Team
All State Player Ravien Lawson, All GVC Player
Chante Dale, and starting Point Guard Kara Boyle.
Stepping up to lead this years’ Lady Knights will
be All GVC selection Brittney Garrett along with
part-time starters from a year ago Emma Limburg
and Jordan Henry. Also, returning guard Abby
Cranford and Ashley Sanchez, who is back after a
year away. Coach Brown feels that this group of
players will only get better as the returning sophomores and incoming freshmen spend time together
on the court. The tough early season schedule that
the Knights will face will only accelerate that process.

Front Court
The Lady Knights Back Court has four returning players: Emma Limburg, Jordan Henry, Abby
Cranford, and Ashley Sanchez. All four will be
counted on to play key roles on this years’ team.
Joining them in the Back Court will be Grace
Fox. Fox comes to the Knights from Foothill High
School where she was an All-League pick and was
named MVP of the Lion’s All-Star game. Niqua
Prince joins the Knights from San Diego where
she was an All-League selection as a Point Guard.
JayeCea McGrew, from West Valley High School,
brings the team very sold play at the guard position and Amanda Godwin, from Enterprise High
School, will bring the Knights very good outside
shooting.
The Knights Front Court returns one player from
a year ago, Brittney Garret. Coach Brown feels
Garrett will challenge to be the top Post player in
the league this year. Joining Garrett in the Front
Court will be Tiffany Miller. Miller comes to
the Knights from American Christian Academy
where she led her team to the High School PlayOffs. Lyndsey Brown, from U-Prep, will bring the
Knights lots of energy and hustle. She will remind
long-time Knight Fans of Hannah Journey from
years ago. Rounding out the Front Court will be
Janaye Tesauro from American Christian Academy.
