Medical Student Affairs Representative
Reflecting on the journey that has brought me to where I am today, I can’t help
but think of all the people and experiences that have helped guide my decisions along the
way. I realize that if it were not for the people in my life, the connections I developed,
and the advice I was given, I would not be a PM&R resident today. I have held to this
theory since my undergraduate days, and believe this to be the reason why I find myself
passionate to serve as a mentor to those who are following a similar path as myself.
During my senior year at Pepperdine, I had the unique opportunity to serve with a
couple of organizations that focused their efforts on providing the student with the tools
to succeed in finding their vocation. Whether this was as a Counselor Coordinator for
New Student Orientation where we helped students become integrated into the university,
or as Vice President on the Student Alumni Organization where we sought to broaden the
network of student and alumni connections for career development, the goal was still the
same: to maximize the student’s opportunity for their future success. Now as a resident, I
find myself using that same passion to assist medical students interested in the field of
PM&R. It was only recently that I was in their shoes with the same questions and
concerns about my own path to PM&R. It has, therefore, been a pleasure to meet with
the PM&R clubs at both Western University and UC Irvine to discuss the field of PM&R
and provide advice about residency. I now find myself in a position that allows me to
pay it forward by advising and mentoring students who are on the same track that I am.
PM&R is moving in exciting directions, drawing an increasing amount of
attention from more students on a yearly basis. As the Medical Student Affairs
Representative, I want to help provide these students with opportunities to succeed in
their pursuit of becoming a physiatrist. It will be my goal to equip them with networking
strategies that will provide them with ample support as they plan for residency. The road
for medical students is arduous, and at times daunting, but AAP can be their resource
along the way. I will be honored to serve in this capacity on the RFC and to be the
liaison for AAP to our future colleagues in the field of PM&R.
