“Aeneas and the Underworld“ Notes Aeneas is a demigod, the son of Venus(Aphrodite); he is a Trojan warrior who flees the city after having a vision telling him to find a new home. Aeneas has difficulty finding a new home for his people and is visited by the ghost of his father (Anchises) who tells him to find the Sibyl (Priestess). The Sibyl is willing to guide him into the underworld but he must first go into the forest and find a golden bough as a present for Proserpina (Queen of the Underworld). Once in the Underworld Aeneas sees all the evils in the world at the entrance. He then sees the ghost of Palinurus, who cannot enter the Underworld without a proper burial. He did not get a proper burial because he drowned. Aeneas is only allowed on the boat into the Underworld after he shows Charon (the boatman) the golden bough. In the Underworld Aeneas sees the ghost of Dido and tries to get her to forgive him for abandoning her. Aeneas is allowed into the Elysian fields after planting the golden bough at the gates. Unlike the rest of the Underworld the Elysian fields are beautiful. Aeneas sees his father but cannot hug him because Anchises is a ghost. Anchises tells him to settle in Italy and found a new race.
