IFMA Foundation - Monthly Board Update – October 2015 Summary
In an on-going effort to keep all IFMA Foundation constituents informed of Foundation progress, we are pleased to present the
October 2015 update. These monthly updates provide a quick overview of key Foundation actions and program results.
Global Workforce Initiative
San Bernardino / Riverside California Pilot
Career Pathway Development: Foundation staff met at Chaffey College to solidify plans for FM Career Pathways development
and development of FM curriculum in regional community colleges. Market research on FM profession demographics such as
number of FM jobs, expected retirement and growth rates, entry level skillsets, etc., is slated to be conducted in November. The
Greater LA Chapters will play a critical role in employer marketing and communications as well as the local Economic
Development office to identify FM jobs in the region.
FM Curriculum Development: Chaffey College is beginning to work on a preliminary concept for a Facility Management certificate
to be added to the Associates Degree Program in Management and integration of IFMA Facility management Professional industry
certification (FMP).
High School Module Development: Steve Lockwood recently met with a number of high school teachers for two days in San
Bernardino County. Together, they nearly completed the development of a number FM educational modules high school teachers
will be able to take into the classroom, but more importantly gave us critical feedback on what must be in place to reach high
school students. In short, we must be able to connect students to jobs – paychecks – in the local area upon graduation. That
means we must work closely with chapters and local member companies to actively recruit entry level positions through our
programs. Earlier this week, we had an initial webinar with the Greater LA Chapter leaders to introduce these needs and
concepts.
Bay Area Pilot
Volunteers in the Northern California GWI Regional Committee participated in the Oakmont High School Career Fair Day, met
with key leaders at San Jose City College and made a presentation on the profession to the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce.
FM Accredited Degree Programs (ADP) / FM Accreditation Commission (FMAC)
Academic Registry
The on-line global resource launched at World Workplace. Initially listing existing Accredited Degree Programs, the goal is to
include every FM Degree available in the world. Students, parents and employers can quickly and easily search the free database
to locate and obtain information on two-year, four year and graduate Facility Management Degrees available worldwide. Search
criteria includes on-line, on-campus and combination programs, areas of focus and geographic. This is vital information for
students considering making FM a career of choice, and a one-stop resource that is greatly needed. FM:Systems has underwritten
the development of the new Registry.
FMAC Meetings at World Workplace
Bylaw rewrite and organizational structure development required for CHEA accreditation. Continuing to develop regional
accreditation task force teams. Training for new on-site accreditors. Set targets for new accreditations and review of reaccreditations for the next year.
Feedback and recommendations from existing accredited institutions (ADPs) regarding integration of IFMA credentials will be
addressed with the IFMA educations and Holmes teams over the coming months. A report back to the ADPs will be complete
prior to Facility Fusion USA 2016 in Indianapolis.
FM Educators SIG support
The IFMA Foundation helped the group set up new social media sites for communication between members, have started working
on a database of SIG members, open exclusively to other SIG members with detailed information designed to enhance peer-topeer networking.
FM Academic Journals and related events
17 presentations were made by academics and researchers in the Academic Research Track held at World Workplace. Papers
have been published via the ijfm Journal site at www.ijfm.net.
ADP Pipeline
Twelve re-accreditations are scheduled for calendar 2016.
6-8 likely new accredited programs anticipated for calendar 2016.
Fundraising
WW and Q1 Fundraising
Support for the Foundation and Foundation events at World Workplace was very good. In financial terms, Celebration
sponsorship revenues were at $75k, other WW Events added $16.5k. Fiscal year first quarter conations to date, Annual Fund
contributions from members is at $20k, and unrestricted Chapter contributions (which fund the GWI and ADP) are at $16k.
Scholarship contributions were higher than recent years, and the Utilities Council Doug Underwood Golf Scholarship Challenge
saw nearly a dozen chapters make their first donation in many years or ever.

Conversations are ongoing with FM service providers to support the GWI at the Advisory Board and Sponsor levels. Support and
encouragement of Chapter and Council fundraisers will be increased after the New Year. Other corporate underwriting
opportunities are also being explored to help fund development of GWI resources. Volunteers are needed to assist in this area.
ISSA Annual Conference
The IFMA Foundation participated in the annual ISSA Interclean conference in an effort to reach out to key FM product suppliers
for their support via their corporate social responsibility or corporate foundation channels.
GenZe
eBike manufacturer GenZe is contributing $200 to the IFMA Foundation for each e-bike sold through the program. More
information can be found at http://www.genze.com/ifmafoundation, and program brochures are available on the Foundation
website homepage www.ifmafoundation.org.
Chapter Engagement and Fundraisers
In addition to the tremendous chapter and corporate support mentioned above, Chapters continue to add Foundation fundraisers
to their calendars. For example, the Phoenix Chapter annual golf tournament in October featured a Foundation fundraising hole
complete with a pneumatic ball launcher and raised nearly $1,000 – and introduced the GWI to the full course of golfers.
Other updates from the Executive Director, Jeffrey J. Tafel, CAE
World Workplace Messaging
Of critical importance to all of the above work, is letting constituents know of the significant progress in making FM a career of
choice. At World Workplace, the Foundation had significant exposure through the Foundation booth on the expo floor, donor
lounge, workshops, events, as well as education and general sessions. The message delivered throughout the conference was:
Last year, the Foundation presented the GWI concept and plan.
In the 12 months since then, the Foundation has been in front of nearly 1,000 high school students at nearly 50 high
schools, awarded 43 FM college students more than $140k in scholarships and fully paid participation at World
Workplace, while continuing to grow the number of accredited FM degree programs to more than 30 and graduates from
those programs enjoy a near 100% placement rate with excellent starting salaries around $55k.
To fill the growing FM workforce gap due to more than 50% of today’s FM practitioners retiring in the next 5-10 years,
the Foundation is developing resources and relationships to help members take the news of FM as a Career of Choice to
students and throughout their communities.
Attendance at the Celebration, Chairman’s Reception, Academic Awards, Student Reception, and GWI related sessions was
excellent. The message and mission of the Foundation is resonating with members and building excitement. Demonstrating,
measuring and reporting successes will be key in the coming months and years.
Upcoming December Member Benefit of the Month
IFMA’s December Member Benefit of the Month will be the Foundation’s most recent publication - Applying What Scientists Know
about WHERE and HOW People Work Best. Available through the IFMA Bookstore for $59.95, all members will be offered a free
download of the e-publication. Launching on Giving Tuesday, members will be encouraged to make a donation to the IFMA
Foundation.
Annual Progress Report
The Foundation’s Annual Progress Report will be published in December and will include audited financial information, GWI and
World Workplace recaps and reviews. Again this year, the FMAC’s annual report will be included in the progress report.
