Garden Design Drawing Skills
Thursday 26 February 10.30am to 4pm
Garden Design Drawing Skills:
Drawing your garden
Our garden design courses are run in
association with the London College
of Garden Design, providers of world-class,
inspirational garden design training.
Tutor: Andrew Wilson
Thursday 23 April 10.30am to 4pm
In our electronic world we might be forgiven for thinking that
drawing no longer matters, however, the ability to sketch and think
spatially is still essential to the design approach. In this one day
course Andrew Wilson looks at the best communication techniques
for the speedy delivery of drawings and visuals.
Tutor: Andrew Wilson
Using and enhancing the techniques developed in the first two
drawing workshops, Andrew will develop skills to draw both
existing and proposed gardens using colour rendering and pen
and watercolour wash techniques. Both general garden views and
planting detail will be covered in the workshop intended to develop
general drawing skills and build confidence.

Two-day studio study course:
Thursday 4 June and Thursday 2 July
10.30am to 4pm
Design Solutions: Trees
Tutors: Andrew Wilson
Tutor: Peter Thurman
The first day will look at the challenges facing designers of small
garden spaces and the different ways you can develop planting plans.
One of the most common planting design challenges faced by many
gardeners is how to structure a great border, or whole garden planting
plan. We will look at the key steps for putting together a great
border, focusing on mixed planting schemes including shrubs. Course
participants will then have a whole month to go away and work on
a space of their choosing, either their own garden or another space.
The second day will be a studio day to look at ideas for these spaces

Designing for Colour

There are well over 150 species of wild rose on the planet and
thousands of varieties. Their cultivation goes back at least 3,000
years. They are spectacular plants that are still badly used or
under-used in our gardens. The talk will explore both the old and the
new, design uses and practicalities such as planting, pruning and
aftercare.
The use of plants from other climatic zones are an increasing
possibility in our changing climate. The fashion for using
predominantly native species has declined however combining both
familiar and native species with more unfamiliar and exotic species
presents an exciting design challenge and opportunity for creating
a new style.
Colour is a key element of the contemporary garden and
planting design scene but needs to be handled with care. The
course explores colour in individual plant selection but also in its
application in terms of plant massing and key colour associations
in planting design. The relationship with materials and architectural
colour will also be discussed.

Bedding seems like an outmoded form of planting design recalling
civic planting and seaside promenades. But, as our gardens get
smaller, the use of changeable seasonal planting and annuals is
more pertinent. Andrew discusses options and ideas and looks at
the ways in which annuals can be explored and used with support
from the team at RHS Wisley.

An Introduction to Japanese Woodblock
Printing with Laura Boswell
Two-day course: Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 February
10.15am to 4.15pm
Tutor: Laura Boswell
Join renowned printmaker Laura Boswell for this two-day course
in the wonderful art of Japanese woodblock printing. Traditional
Japanese woodblock is a sensitive and beautiful print process using
watercolour and rice. This ancient method produced the iconic
woodblock prints from Japan’s Edo Period. It is a table top process,
requiring no press and uses totally non-toxic materials.
This course covers the basic skills needed to create a multi-coloured
print using traditional Japanese woodblock techniques, giving an
understanding of the materials and the techniques to prepare,
register, cut and print using Japanese plywood and watercolour
paints. Laura welcomes all levels of experience, especially beginners
who would like to take away the basic skills to be able to print
successfully with watercolour at home. Laura is one of the only
practitioners of the art in the UK and at the time of writing has just
been selected as the British artist for a return residency in Japan to
further her skills. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from her in a
relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

In this workshop you will be introduced into the world of Japanese
ink and the beauty of painting Wild Orchids. The appeal of this
technique is in the flow of the brush, and the seemingly ‘effortless’
minimalistic stroke that suggest a bamboo in the wind. It is an
art form of economy, using one brush and one colour to reflect
upon nature’s harmonies. You will study Wild Orchid, and learn
to paint with the Asian brush. The workshops will include a short
introduction, live demonstration by Talia, work-sheets, one on one

• Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled by the RHS.
• RHS Garden Wisley reserves the right to cancel an event and in these
circumstances will fully refund course fees.
•
All events will run subject to a minimum number of students.
The decision as to whether the course goes ahead is made one week
in advance of the event; therefore you are strongly advised to book
before this time.
•
Circumstances may require that event tutors change from those
named in this brochure. Provided a tutor of equal standing is
secured, participants will not be notified in advance. Refunds
will only be given in the unlikely event that a replacement tutor
is unavailable.
Our facilities are accessible for wheelchair users. Please contact the adult
learning team on 01483 479748 or at adultlearning@rhs.org.uk if you have
any specific needs or requirements.
• Wheelchairs: RHS Garden Wisley has a number of manual wheelchairs
which are available to borrow at the garden entrance.
•
Mobility scooters: Three scooters are available for use which must be
pre-booked by ringing 01483 224234. A £5 returnable deposit is
payable. There will be a short questionnaire and trial before hire so it is
advised that you allow an extra five minutes on your travelling time.
•
•
Facilities: Hillside Events Centre and the Clore Learning Centre are both
fitted with a hearing loop and have disabled access toilets.
Carers and translators: Attendants cannot be provided, but one
companion is admitted free of charge per wheelchair user, visually
impaired visitor or other person whose disability or situation necessitates
a carer. If companions wish to be included in refreshments during the
course please state this and pay for refreshments at the time of booking.
Please note that we are not able to allow cars into the garden. If you have
impaired mobility and feel you may need assistance from your car to the
course venue, please contact the adult learning team in advance on the
number above who will be able to organise alternative arrangements.
ADMISSION:
Admission to RHS Garden Wisley is included in the price of the course ticket.
WEATHER:
