B’N AI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER From the RAbbi Heaven is My throne. What kind of house could you build me? (Isaiah 66:1) What makes Huntington a fit place for Jews to live? The Mishkan, usually translated as “tabernacle,” was a portable temple to accompany our desert wanderings back in the biblical day. It was a way for God to dwell among us. The word, Mishkan, means dwelling place. It was also called the Mikdash, or holy place. The idea was not that God lived in it. After all, as Isaiah tells us: Heaven is God’s throne. Rather, by our efforts to build it and structure our camp around it, we made that camp into a place fit for the holy people God wanted us to be. To paraphrase Martin Buber, God was – and is – in our relationships. Since then, remembering and re-envisioning the Mishkan has been a way we think about making our lives and our communities holy places worthy of God’s Presence. A year ago January we invited Bishop Sam Moore of the Full Gospel Assembly to B’nai Sholom to talk about the Civil Rights Movement in Huntington. Specifically, we wanted to know about the relationship between the black community and the Jewish community here. The conclusion was that, in spite of the fact that most people in the room knew him from his days as a teacher, there really is no relationship between our two communities in Huntington. We agreed that we want to change that. Last January several people from B’nai Sholom carried a Torah in the Martin Luther King Day March. This year there were about a dozen of us marching and each took a turn carrying the Torah. We were commemorating the Jews who risked their lives in the voting registration efforts of that time, and the rabbis who marched with Dr. King in the 1960’s. For example, two Jews, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman along with their black friend James Chaney, were shot to death by the Ku Klux Klan for their efforts in registering black voters. In one of the marches Dr. King led in Selma, Alabama, Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath carried a Torah. As Bishop Moore and I have been looking for a way to get our congregations together, Torah seems the logical place to start. Their Wednesday night Bible study group is interested in studying about the Tabernacle, the Mishkan, with us. So on February 19 at 6:30 pm, please come the synagogue to learn about Jewish and Christian commentaries on the Mishkan. Learn and discuss how this account of building a holy place in the desert continues to shape our lives. One more thought. Whether or not I’ve made a compelling argument for studying about the Mishkan, I hope you will be moved to shake your stumps and get yourself over to the synagogue to make a warm welcome. As David Aaron, one of my teachers at HUC taught, “Text is only pretext for coming together to study. This process becomes the community.” The more we cultivate friendships with the various groups in Huntington, the more we are able to say with conviction: We are still building the Mishkan. This is a fit place for God, and therefore, for Jews to live. Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton P.S. February 2014 B’N AI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER In Appreciation to Jack Steinberg Thank you to Jack Steinberg for his very generous donation to the Jack and Edda Steinberg Family Fund. The fund can receive donations from the congregation and community at any time. Jack has designated two important purposes for this fund. The first purpose is for holiday dinners meant to host students, new Jewish people who have moved in to our community with no contacts, and those unable to prepare dinner for themselves due to many reasons. Jack’s intention is no one be left on their own to celebrate important holidays. Right now, Sandy Colker is the contact for these dinners. The second purpose allows the congregation to use the fund for a part of our High Holiday Cantorial expenses each year, if necessary. We cannot think of this fund without thinking of Edda, who was such a presence in our community. We sure do miss her and are glad we now have this fund with her name to keep her forever in our hearts. TORAH STUDY with our soon-to-be-friends from The Full Gospel Assembly and Bishop Sam Moore The Tabernacle/Mishkan/ Miqdash/Ohel Mo'ed What does the portable dwelling place for God in the desert mean to those Jews and Christians who have lived through and benefited from the American Civil Rights Movement? 9 February 2014 B’N AI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER Endings and Beginnings by Marty G reenbe rg, Executive Director Network of Independent Communities of JFNA. I find that one of the most fascinating aspects of the Jewish religion is how each year, many of us read the Torah in its entirety and as soon as we f i n i s h it, we start right over again! We g l e a n all kinds of new wisdom and then plunge back in to glean more. How is this possible and why is it necessary? Our sages would say that it is possible because there are always new lessons to learn, and it is necessary because the tasks of understanding ourselves, our world and how we need to fix it, are not yet completed. You might ask what the connection is between that advice and the annual campaigns of the Network of Independent Communities of JFNA. Here is how I see it: Each year, if we look at the plight of our 13 million Jewish brethren around the world, we see much success-but also struggle, poverty, anti-Semitism, lack of educational resources and, in general, concern about our future in Israel and around the world. Despite our success in America and our development into the wealthiest Jewish community in history, we still have not raised enough to assure a dignified old age for every Jewish woman and man in America, Israel or the former Soviet Union. We still have not solved the problem of providing enough food for those who are hungry, nor enough m e d i c a l care or social services for those who need them. We have also not raised enough to help all the children in Israel who are at-risk and need a helping hand and a safe place to be after school. So there is the connection; each year we strive mightily to help thousands of Jews live better lives because we care. We finish our 2013 campaign with all the energy we can muster, applaud our accomplishments, learn from our successes and failures, and then go back into the fray-because our task of repairing the world and caring f or our brothers and sisters is not done. I think there is a beautiful symmetry to this. Your help is needed and you have a role to play this year. Next year, the Jewish people will again need you, and you will still have a place at the table to share your voice, your energy and your resources. To each and every one of you who is helping ensure this sacred work gets done - thank you and mazel tov. You are engaging in our age old mitzvah of caring for one another through tzedakah - and keeping alive the chain of Jewish tradition. With best wishes, Marty Greenberg Executive Director of the Network of Independent Communities 10 February 2014 B’N AI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER A very big THANK YOU goes out to JOE HORN for meticulously hanging all of our plaques that needed to go up.
