Monogram for My Lady - Laura Jenkins Thompson
Hand class taught Friday and continued on Saturday
You don’t have to be a peer of the realm to be a lady and this pillow will prove it! I would venture to
say that Dame Maggie Smith would surely want to add this modern version of a royal cypher to any
divan at Downton Abbey. The monochromatic monogram design in taupe on white features a single
initial of fine natural linen appliqued on white linen embellished with curving flourishes and stylized
florals topped with an official coronet signifying the title of “lady.” Laura created a new 4” alphabet
just for appliqued du le point de paris and incorporated a great new technique you are going to love
that eliminates a lot of the time and effort required to traditionally prepare the applique for stitching.
The embroidered flourishes are stitched in le point en biasis, the “flowers” are formed by padded satin
dots, and the leaves are directional “foolproof satin stitch.” The 2-1/2” wide crown above the initial is
embroidered with bands of “foolproof satin stitch,” backstitch, satin stitch dots and granito “pearls.”
The complete embroidery design measures 8” stitched on a pre-assembled 12” white linen pillow with a
hemstitched 1-1/4” flange.
Student Reqirements: basic handwork supplies, additional lighting and magnification.

One for the Money; Two for the Show – Cindy Foose
12 hour machine class – taught Friday and continued on Saturday
This childhood ditty perfectly describes the class format – a notebook class chocked full of technique
with a completed dress to show off at the end of the two sessions. Though the garment is a child’s
dress, the skills are sure to spill over into a variety of sewing situations. Good construction is paramount
to the success of any project.
A darling A-line dress with a flared, gored skirt, a sweetheart neckline, lined bodice and
sleeve/sleeveless options from the upcoming. “A Wink and A Nod” pattern collection is the conduit for
implementing the varied and distinct stitching and finishing requirements unique to this style garment. In
short, this new class will break down the components needed for A-lines. Pattern size from the 2-8
range, fabric and buttons needed for the dress, and a selection of trims for an individualized pocket
treatment. The class dress project is purposefully simple to ensure the focus remains on stitching
curved/bias seams; a variety of seam finishes beyond the expected French or serged seam, a foolproof, easy way to a lined sleeveless bodice, hemming requirements for a-lines; multiple finishes for the
optional lined sleeve; stitching corners and curves (inward and/or outward leaning); mock bias
bindings, and a host of other tidbits too numerous to mention. All in all, this class is indeed a “two for
one” ticket!

edgestitch, open toed embroidery, ¼” quilting, small rolled hem (optional). walking foot helpful but not

Scatter Scallops with Abandon – Cindy Foose

Curvy, sassy scallops always add interesting detail to a garment whether they are skipping around a
collar, finishing the edge of a perky sleeve, softening a closing edge, or adding dramatic flair to a
replique or applique hem. You will be amazed how simple it is to scatter scallops along almost any
edge. The first step is to understand exactly how to create scallops; then with those concepts firmly
in place, we will put them to good use and create a variety of scalloped edges both on paper and
with stitched samples. Never fear, very little math is involved and the sewing is easy. The class kit

Smock Bishop Dress–Kathy Dykstra
6 hour Smocking and Constructing -Taught Thursday only

be mastered in this class. Adapting your bishop pattern for use with pique or other heavier fabrics
will be covered in this class as well. After sewing the fronts, backs and sleeves, pleating the bishop
dress will be conquered. Although bias band sleeves or smocked sleeves will be sewn in class, a
quick and easy way to stitch an elasticized puff sleeve will also be discussed for future projects. An
easy, self-placket with 2 button closure finishes the back of the dress. With the bishop dress fully

Kids Can Stitch and Color – Maggie Bunch
6 hour machine class for “Kids of all Ages” taught Saturday only
Join Miss Maggie for a day of designing and sewing your own 9 patch pillow. First, choose the size of
your pillow! Choose a small pillow for your bed or a big one to relax on the floor! Then pick 9 precut
squares to sew together for your pillow top. Sew them, row by row, press them, to and fro. A special
square will be included on each pillow. Grownups will embroider along the lines of the design and
kids will paint the black and white drawing with special paint pins. Each pillow will be finished with
more black and white fabric for more fun! There will quilted/embroidered hearts for the corners, and
motifs to trace & embroider. Once the pillow top is sewn, we will use the fun stitches on your sewing

a package of pens to take home to keep coloring!

Nuno Fragments – Margo Duke
6 hour Machine Felting class taught Saturday only
Students will make their own Nuno Fragments while at the same time learning how to use their
Embellisher and sewing machine. These fragments can easily be incorporated into another project.
This idea came to me while watching Downton Abbey and realizing the beautiful fabric texture that
can be created with the Embellisher and free motion stitching – imagining the days gone by and
those with good fortune having the opportunity to wear such treasures which were one-of-a-kind
and not mass produced. Not everyone was so lucky, because as you can imagine, textiles were
hand woven, many times imported and very expensive.
Since I love working with fine silks and fabrics it seemed like the perfect way to teach some of the
techniques I’ve learned from experimenting over the years on a small scale. Playing this way will
help students learn how the various materials respond to the needle felting machine and wet felting
before embarking on larger projects.
Student Requirements: two old towels, scissors, tweezers or other “pointer”, sulky polyester thread.
