THE GOOD NEWS OF GRACE June 2015 A Newsletter for Members and Friends of Grace Lutheran Church 1408 Washington Street Wenatchee, WA 98801-2555 Time After Pentecost O God of creation, eternal majesty, you preside over land and sea, sunshine and storm. By your strength pilot us, by your power preserve us, by your wisdom instruct us, and by your hand protect us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. (Prayer of the Day for June 21) Dear Grace people; God’s blessings to us are many, and some are on the way. Perhaps some have come and gone without our detection. As St. Paul wrote in Romans 8 (presented to us on the Day of Pentecost), all creation has been in labor pains, groaning. According to Paul, we too have these labor pains as we wait for God to be made known even to us. The time after Pentecost is another opportunity for our Christian faith to be formed (and informed.. and reformed) by the accounts of the miracles and teaching of Jesus. We will hear again how he rose in popularity, how he introduced a different set of priorities in the world, and how he loved the seemingly unloveable. Two suggestions for you for this long season that takes us through the summer: 1. In response to the Sunday scriptures, discern one way God can work through you in the week to come, and be open to experiencing a little twinge of unease or even awkwardness as you commit to an action item. Keep track of your weekly responses in a notebook. 2. Watch for ways God works in people around you, connecting the Sunday scriptures (whether that person knows the connection or not!). Have the courage to tell them about the connection you see. We have the potential to get a better sense of the “labor pains” God is coaching us through when we pause, breathe, listen for the quiet, and in so doing open ourselves to the merciful, loving guidance of the resurrected Christ. As the people of Grace, we have the opportunity to do this as a community. There is no better blessing than that. Continued on page 2 THE MISSION OF GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH To proclaim and celebrate the gospel of Jesus Christ through word and sacraments so that a community of believers is created, trained, nurtured, and sent into mission. From the desk of Pastor James Continued from page 1 • • • • Please be in prayer with me this month: That we will come to a quick but faithful decision about our next Director of Music Ministries. That people traveling this summer will have renewal given to them by the Holy Spirit, and a new store of energy for the tasks and opportunities that await them at home. That our intern Bethany Wurtz will be eager to learn and reflect, and that her connections with her family at home in North Dakota will remain strong. That the Spirit of God will put final touches on the communities of Detroit, all leaders, speakers, performers and groups for what is promising to be a fantastic ELCA Youth Gathering. Please note my days off for June: Monday June 1, Monday June 8, Monday June 15, Tuesday I will be on vacation June 16-17, and June 21 - July 1 Blessings and hopes for the start of a beautiful summer! In order to give the second service the best chance of success, it is important to get feedback from the people of Grace. What is the best worship and education schedule for Sunday mornings? What is God leading us toward by adding a service? What ideas, preferences and commitments do the people of Grace have for growing into another worship time? What are the benefits and opportunities? What “markers” do we watch for as we determine the viability? Please plan to join the conversation. Materials will be prepared to help aid the flow of the conversation. Our goal is to have feedback from as many people of Grace as possible!
