Holy Family Catholic Church 4401 Highcrest Rd., Rockford, Illinois 61107 815-398-4280 May 31, 2015 . FROM THE PASTOR Holy Family Catholic Church · Rockford | 2 A Few Things… I want to thank all of you who have contributed to our DSP so far. We have had a great response! As a thank you to those who have made a pledge or have contributed, we have the names listed in this bulletin. If, for some reason, your name was inadvertently left off the list, or misspelled, please, do not hesitate to contact us at 815-398-4280 so we can make the correction. I also want to take this time to ask for your understanding of the change in the Mass Schedule. It is increasingly getting more difficult to keep the schedules we currently have in place with less priests. I appreciate you support! Starting June 1 the Harte Center Offices will have summer hours of: Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM—4:00 PM Friday 8:00 AM—noon June 6 we have two deacons—Deacon Caliente and Deacon McNamara who will be ordained to the priesthood! I would ask that you keep them in your prayers and continue to pray for all priests as well as an increase to the priesthood. Summer Mass Changes Please join us on Sunday, June 7 from 8 AM until noon for a reception for Fr. Gerard. At this time, we do not know which parish he will be assigned to, but we will have his address in the bulletin as soon as we can. This summer, Nick Sentovich, our parishioner and a seminarian, will be here assisting for about a month. Although Nick is going through the Seminary, he will be here in a learning capacity only. As a seminarian, he can not offer Mass or provide any sacraments. Please welcome Nick when you see him!! And please, keep him in your prayers as he continues his education. Finally, please have a safe and relaxing summer— take time to be with your family, enjoy the scenery, but don’t take a vacation from your Catholic vOcation! Sincerely, in Christ, Msgr. Eric R. Barr Pastor . With Fr. Jaskierny and Fr. Gerard receiving new assignments from the Bishop, it leaves myself and Bishop Doran as the only available priests to do daily Mass. Canon Law requires we only say a limited number of Masses each day (you may remember the reformation and Martin Luther—that’s what caused all that) - with possible funerals and Bishop Doran’s fragile health, we have decided, with the support of the Parish Council, that we will continue to have 6:30 & 8:30 AM daily Masses throughout the summer, however we will no longer have 5:30 PM Mass during the week OR confessions on Wednesday and Friday evenings. 5:30 PM Mass with confessions was started as a Lenten addition when Msgr. Kagan was assigned here, but eventually grew to a permanent Mass, when there were four priests assigned. We apologize to those who have grown to love this mass, and we hope that you will bear with us in this time of priests scarcity. If you have a 5:30 PM Mass scheduled for your loved one, please call the Harte Center Offices and we will switch it to either the 6:30 AM or 8:30 AM Mass that same day. Soto Holy Family Catholic Church · Rockford | 5 Vocations Corner By Fr. Romke Congratulations to the 8th graders that graduated this week. It has been a long journey for them to get to this point and we wish them great success in their upcoming journey. May God give them the courage and wisdom they need as they enter this new chapter in their lives. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations for our final Race For Education Campaign. It was a very successful year again and we are another step closer to obtaining our goal to air condition the entire school. With the help of the school and the campaign funds, we have raised enough money to complete the main floor with air conditioning. We know how much the kids appreciate it, especially during those hot days! Also, a reminder to parents to get your supply kit orders in. The forms were already sent home, so make sure you fill these out and send in your money. Coming up we have Olympic Day on June 3rd. This is a wonderful afternoon for the kids and a fun way to end the school year. Important dates to remember: August 12: Used uniform sale/supply kit pick up day Our sincere apologies to Cullin Hultgren for the misspelling of his last name on the bulletin cover last weekend. Congratulations on your graduation and may all the best to you in your high school years! Vocations Corner: House on Rock. Sometimes in life we may find ourselves in a situation where we don’t quite understand what God is trying to do or what He is calling us to. We may become very confused and even begin to question how good can come from the situations that we find ourselves in. At this point we simply have to TRUST, which is of course easier said than done. In these moments I like to meditate on the Gospel passage of the house built on rock vs. the house built on sand. The interesting thing that you find if you read the passage carefully is that the rains, the floods, and the winds come against both houses. It isn’t as if the person who built the house on a solid foundation won’t have to endure the trials. However, in the midst of the storm, if we establish the foundation of our lives on Christ, than we will have a place to go. The storms may rage on outside, but we can remain at peace inside. I often like to envision myself inside the house, with Jesus sitting across from me. He is always peaceful, inviting me to follow his lead. So, when you find yourself in the midst of the storm, make the choice to keep its effect outside where it won’t overwhelm you or take you gaze off of Christ. Remain inside, with Christ, so that He can assure you of His constant help and protection. No vacation from your Catholic vocation… Vacation is a wonderful time, but it never means from ones prayer life. Please remember that Sunday Mas is a requirement for fulfilling the third commandment—Keep Holy the Lord’s Day. If you are traveling, there are various websites to check times and the vacation spots you will be visiting. If you have trouble, please call the Harte Center! We will gladly help you find Catholic Churches in the area you are vacationing. Our Lord has been so good to us and He wants to bless us with rest and relaxation. But keep your prayer life strong, attend Mass on Sunday and stay friends with Christ! God Bless you this vacation season and always! . Pray with your little ones Dear Lord, we thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross so that we, like the butterfly, can become a new creation. We ask you to change us and to make us beautiful. Amen. Minutes from Mom Today is the celebration of the Most Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Do you find yourself praying to one person in the Trinity more than the other two? Focus this week on reaching out to the other two. Seek, pray and ask for guidance from them. See if things change in your life, in your prayer habits. Also look around in nature for things of three and think of the Trinity. I know on our campus there is a large tree with three significant trunks. I saw it years ago and thanked God for putting it here and reminding me of the Most Holy Trinity. Vacation Bible School Dates 2015 Please prayerfully consider helping out in some way. The 37 -40 million more men than women in China has led to human trafficking & human slavery. "When it comes to when talking in your congregations, what’s the thing that is really going to capture the essence of who we are as Christians, or as Catholics, [poverty] is oftentimes viewed as a 'nice to have' relative to an issue like abortion." Wasilewski - As pro-life people, our deepest motivation for defending the dignity of human life must ultimately be this same love. We recognize this great dignity fully present in the newly conceived and those near the end of life alike, and out of love for them, and love for the God whose image they are created in, we seek to defend their lives from those in society who do not see them as valuable or deserving of full respect. Defending life un-apologetically, especially when it is most vulnerable, is a necessary task for us as Christians. But in our efforts we must remember that the cause of life is never truly won without Christian charity. Brett Harp, Director of Youth Ministry It is always easier to do something that scares you when you are not alone. When we are little and we have to get a shot from the doctor, it is always reassuring to have our parents with us. Just seeing mom or dad in the room makes things better. When we are older and we have to go to a social gathering where we don't know many people, it's always much easier when you can bring a friend along with you. "Will you come with me?" is one of the catchphrases of the frightened. In the Gospel, we are told to go and make disciples of all nations. Many of us would rather not interact at all with those outside our comfort-zone, let alone evangelize them. That is a fairly tall order, and definitely a frightening one, but God does not leave us to do it on our own. We have the community of the Catholic Church, millions of others with the same mission, to support us. More importantly, God tells us that he will remain with us. It can be difficult and scary to preach the Gospel, whether in word or deed, but we are not alone in our undertaking. With the entirety of the Church, the communion of saints, and God himself supporting us, we have no reason to fear. All High School Students, including new freshman, are welcome as always to join us Sundays from 7:00-8:30 for our ministry nights. We meet at our youth ministry house at 1503 Rebecca Drive (across from the parish offices). Any teen or parent with questions can email me at bharp@holyfamilyrockford.org.
