OUTLINE
THE OUTSIDERS
From the series Christian?
Christian…what does that mean?
“The juice goes out of Christianity when it becomes too based on faith rather
than on living like Jesus or seeing the world as Jesus saw it.” –Steve Jobs
Who I am is who we are…embedded identity
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one
another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:34-35
Outsiders and insiders
Win the world
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:19-20
A winning strategy…beauty and love
“Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win
as many as possible…I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means
I might save some.” 1 Corinthians 9:19,22
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be
judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck
of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can
you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a
plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye,
and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5
“The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a
friend of tax collectors and sinners...’” Matthew 11:19

Loving the insiders
“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans
do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather
have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing
this?…I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been
doing this.” 1 Corinthians 5:1-3
Jesus followers have boundaries…security
“But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a
brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or
swindler. Do not even eat with such people.” 1 Corinthians 5:11
Sin always hurts…accountability…humility
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23
The goal is restoration…loving relationship
“Hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on
the day of the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 5:5
“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore
that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” Galatians 6:1
Loving the outsiders
“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people–not at all meaning
the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that
case you would have to leave this world…What business is it of mine to judge those outside
the church?…” 1 Corinthians 5:9-10,12
You are salt and light…don’t disengage
“…many…sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.” Matthew 9:10
“…This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Luke 15:2
Outsiders are not accountable to you
