By making the free schools popular, he grasped the growing needs of society in his own day and for all times. No phase of the educational problem escaped his penetrating vision.” John Baptist de La Salle was born to a wealthy family in France, but he was so moved by the plight of the poor that he resolved to dedicate his talents and advanced education towards the service of children “who were often left to themselves and were badly brought up.” This brought him to establish free schools and form the community that became known as the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He made radical reforms that responded to his society’s needs and changed the structure and system of education altogether. He made education available to all classes and taught in a language that his students could understand. He went on to establish training colleges for teachers, reform schools for delinquents, technical schools, as well as secondary schools for modern languages, arts and sciences. His work quickly spread through France and continued to spread across the globe after his death. In 1900, John Baptist de La Salle was declared a Saint. In 1950, in recognition of his exemplary life and contributions to education, he was made Patron Saint of All Teachers. His legacy lives on today, as the De La Salle Brothers, assisted by more than 100,000 lay colleagues, teach over 1,000,000 students in 82 countries. Saint Benilde Romançon Pierre Romançon was born to a poor peasant family in Auvergne, France. At an early age, he became a tutor of prayers to his playmates. He felt a strong desire to be a Lasallian Brother and assumed the name Benilde when he became a follower of John Baptist de La Salle. He loved teaching children and spent 40 years in the classroom. He taught not only young pupils, but also held classes for some of his students’ parents and other adults as well. He became distinguished for his devotion to educating students from all walks of life, going as far as to learn sign language to teach a Deaf boy catechism in order to make it possible for the latter to receive Holy Communion. An embodiment of Lasallian spirituality and simplicity, Benilde Romançon worked hard to enrich the quality of fraternal unity among the Brothers through prayer, song and music. In 1928, his virtuous life was recognized. In acknowledging his achievements, Pope Pius XI said, “Sanctity does not consist in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” In October 27, 1967, he was declared a saint. Benilde Romançon’s selfless devotion to education encouraged many young men to the priesthood and religious life, and he became known as the Lasallian patron saint of vocations. 8 Our Story “Sanctity does not consist in doing extraordinary things, but in doing things extraordinarily well.” Pope Pius XI on Benilde Romançon It was in this spirit that De La Salle University established the Career Development Program (CDP) in 1980 to cater to unique learners such as working students. It was an evening school offering degree programs in Business Administration major in Business Management and Marketing Management. It was also the beginnings of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. As the program progressed, it saw that there were students who needed guidance to cope with the academic requirements in degree-oriented courses in regular colleges. In response to this need, CDP established the Preparatory Studies Department in 1984. In 1985, CDP expanded to become a Community College. It opened its doors to regular students in 1987 when it began offering courses in Human Resource Management and Computer Applications. The college preparedness program was still being offered under the Educational Development Department, which later on progressed to become the General Studies Program. It was in 1988 that the Community College was renamed De La Salle UniversityCollege of Saint Benilde, and then later on, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, after the Lasallian patron saint for vocations. As the College expanded, it moved to its new campus at 2544 Taft Avenue, Manila in January 1989 and opened more programs under the Arts and Business Studies Department. The College began conducting its own admissions process in 1993 and reached full autonomy in 1994. In 1997, it held its first commencement exercise independent from DLSU. Five years after its autonomy, DLS-CSB inaugurated its second campus at the corner of Arellano Avenue and Estrada Streets: the Angelo King International Center (AKIC) Campus which houses the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management and CSB Hotel, the first hotel-school in the country. Then in 2007, the College inaugurated its third campus along P. Ocampo St. (formerly Vito Cruz), the School of Design and Arts (SDA) Campus. With various programs and services, it ensures that equal access to opportunities and the diverse needs of its students and professionals are addressed. SDEAS offers a degree in Bachelor in Applied Deaf Studies; a pre-college program through the Deaf Learners’ Preparatory Course; and short courses in Filipino Sign Language for Deaf and Hearing individuals. Aside from academics, SDEAS provides holistic services for its students through Center for Deaf Esteem and Formation (C-DEAF) and Center for Partnership and Development (C-PD). C-DEAF develops self-esteem and leadership skills of Deaf students through various activities while C-PD builds partnerships among the Deaf and Hearing communities. Filipino Sign Language is used as the medium of instruction in recognition that the Deaf community has its own language, culture and values. Believing that college education must be equally accessible to members of the Deaf community, DLS-CSB offers scholarships to deserving and marginalized Deaf high school graduates. Since 2002 until 2010, SDEAS has been a partner of the Post Secondary Education Network-International (PEN-International), a global collaboration of colleges and universities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The partnership, funded by a grant from the Nippon Foundation of Japan, has brought in innovative instructional strategies and technologies for Deaf learners & faculty members. Other schools for the Deaf come to Benilde to join in the celebration. Students in SDEAS’ Business Entrepreneurship track are trained to be owners and managers of small- to medium-sized enterprises. SDEAS has two centers that enable interactive learning through technology–PEN Multimedia Learning Center and the PEN Learning Center. SDEAS offers Filipino Sign Language classes to students, College personnel and the external public as part of DLS-CSB’s commitment to provide access for the Deaf. Deaf Learners’ Preparatory Course (DLPC) The DLPC is a two-trimester evaluative program that provides remedial enrichment and formative activities via five clusters of study: Faith Formation, Personal Development (interpersonal & intrapersonal), Filipino Sign Language, English, and Mathematics. Truly, design and art have become integrated aspects of our modern existence. Creativity, which fuels the sustainability of these things, determines the quality of our lives today and in the future. The School of Design and Arts (SDA) provides a wide scope of offerings in specialized creative disciplines that meet the demands of an information-driven world. Its degree programs in the fields of arts, film, design, music, dance and multimedia, employ state-of-the-art traditional and new media technologies backed up by a strong Design Foundation program. The development of its curricula is moving towards a balanced distribution of the arts, history, critical thinking, design research, design process and methodology deep computer intelligence, syllabi focus and contextual relevance to environment. SDA has its own campus, a 14-storey academic complex envisioned to be the home of the new generation of Filipino artists. It houses various laboratories and materials where students can put into practice and hone their passions, talents and unique artistic abilities. Bachelor of Arts in Animation (ABANI) 3 9 years terms The AB in Animation program aims to strike a balance between commercial animation and fine art animation. It is the first comprehensive program for future animators in the country. You will focus on 2D animation, 3D animation and experimental animation. The curriculum will cover the theoretical and practical studies of animation with an internship program during the last year. The course includes basic design foundation subjects and the business aspect of animation film production. By the final year, you will have a project that will either be 2D, 3D or experimental in nature. An exhibit and a film festival will be the culminating activity of the course. The School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (SHRIM) prepares future hoteliers, restaurateurs and tourism managers for the rigors and precision of the hospitality industry. SHRIM offers two degrees with strong management orientation–the Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (HRIM) and International Hospitality Management (IHM). HRIM has three tracks of specialization: Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management. So whether it is running the business end at the back of the house, engaging customers at the front of the house or creating dishes in the kitchen, students are trained in all aspects of the hotel, restaurant and tourism industry no matter what specialization they choose. Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP) Applicants Interested ETEEAP applicants must first inquire and submit a comprehensive resume to SHRIM before proceeding with your application. To qualify, you must be a Filipino citizen, who is at least a high school graduate with no college degree. You must be at least 25 years of age and has at least five years of work experience in your field of specialization, the past two years of which must be at least in supervisory level. If you attended seminar(s) and workshop(s), these must be related to your field of specialization. DLS-CSB will assess the relevance of the seminars and workshops with regards to your ETEEAP application. ETEEAP is intended for working professionals who wish to complete a bachelor’s degree through their professional achievements. DLS-CSB’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (SHRIM) offers the ETEEAP program and conducts pre-screening of applicants. You must first inquire and submit a comprehensive resume to SHRIM before proceeding with your application. Candidates for ETEEAP are also required to have good moral character and professional work ethics as certified by past and current employers.
