Chapter Activities of 2008~2009 Chapter Development: Chapter application; Constitution and Bylaws; Funding applications to SPIE and Rutgers GSA (09/18/08) General member meeting Qiulin Ma and Lei huang were elected as the new president and vice president, respectively. Lei huang and Zhizhong Dong were elected as the new secretary and treasurer, respectively. (10/16/08) General member meeting Got our new members acquainted, introduced each other’s academic background or interested field. We also discussed future activities’ plans and set up schedules. (10/30/08) Joint Technologies Virtual meeting at Colgate Palmolive, Piscataway NJ A technologies virtual meeting hold by New York Society for Applied Spectroscopy in Colgate, NJ. An engineering topic related to the applications of Spectroscopy had been presented. Also, this on-site visit to Colgate gave out members a sense of the real industry. Members also had a discussion of the career development and research topics with scientists. (12/12/08) Lab tour in the Laboratories at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City The students went to the New York Society for Applied Spectroscopy (NYSAS) meeting which is conducted as a tour of the laboratories at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, followed by a presentation. (01/21/09) General member meeting Our members presented what they have done or have been working on their researches, shared with each other the research experiences and wisdom. A lot of more interesting engineering topics had been discussed. (02/17/09) General member meeting Summed up the activities in the past months. Our members shared with each other what they got from our chapters’ activities and the progress of their researches. A discussion of the pros and cons of our activities and further more the future plans. (03/04/09) Seminar by Mr. Kevin Harding (Principal scientist in GE Research, SPIE and OSA Fellow, SPIE President '2008) A seminar given by Mr.Kevin Harding, introduced the art of invention. Mr. Harding used to be a president of SPIE, 2008 and has served as association chair, society committee chair and conference chair for over 20 years working with the SPIE, LIA, ESA, SME, and OSA. This seminar was supported by SPIE visiting lecture program, mechanical department of Rutgers university and throlabs. Enthusiastic ask & answer after the seminar pushed this activity to another climax. (04/26/09) General member meeting Summed up the activities in the past months. Our members shared with each other what they got from our chapters’ activities and the progress of their researches. A discussion of the pros and cons of our activities and further more the future plans. (06/20/09) Join West Point Boat Ride with New York Society for Applied Spectroscopy We joined the New York Society for Applied Spectroscopy (NYSAS) annual boat ride at West Point, which is for honoring the 2009 Graduate & Undergraduate Student Award Winners. During the boat ride, presentations are given by the winners. And the SPIE student members got to discuss with the members in the NYSAS on different research topics related to spectroscopy. 4. Planned Activities of Next Year (1). Monthly member meeting As in the regular member meeting, we will discuss past and coming events, share with each other our research experiences and opinions. Further plans will also be taken into discussions. (2). Visiting Scholar lecture As a visiting lecture program from SPIE, we plan to take the advantage of it to invite Mr. Kevin Harding, who is the president of SPIE this year and has a over thirty years of research experience in optics industry, to give a talk to us (topic will be either academic or career development). (3). On-site visiting To offer out members a real industry experience , one on-site visiting to an optics related company will be provided. Detailed explanations and discussions will be given by research scientists. (4). Joint Meeting with other societies To promote the optics related areas with a more expanded view, we plan to hold joint meeting with other societies. By the opportunity, our members will have the chance to know more about the optics related research field as in other points of view. (5). Invited talk Academic talk will be invited to give a sense of advanced science and technology, in this manner, our members will have the sense of what is going on in the top of optics related researches and gain a clearer mind of researches. 5.
