In the competition, teams of participants will use their imaginations to create their vision of the Dinoterra world using Paddle Pop ice cream sticks, wrappers, and other waste material. “As a brand very close to the hearts of Malaysian children, we want to use the Paddle Pop 2013 Young Builders Award to encourage them to be creative and to use their imaginations to do something fun as a team. We fully support the Ministry of Education’s call for a holistic and well-balanced syllabus for students with a blend of academic and co-curricular focus. Our competition rewards students for their creativity and teamwork, besides encouraging them to reuse waste material such as ice cream sticks and wrappers,” said Shawn Tan, Senior Brand Manager for Wall's Ice Cream, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd. The launch event saw the appearance of the Paddle Pop lion who led a Gangnam Putrajaya Style dance performance for the students, followed by a 45-minute art workshop that explained the competition rules and mechanics to the students and teachers using a video presentation and samples. The 300 students at the workshop also enjoyed a lesson on making balloon dinosaurs, and were later treated to yummy Paddle Pop ice cream. Between 23 April and 10 May 2013, the Paddle Pop mascot will also be visiting another three schools - SK Wangsa Maju, and one each in Kedah and Kuantan, Pahang, while the organisers will be giving seminars on the competition to teachers from another 52 schools from around Peninsula Malaysia. Overall, a total of 1,000 schools are targeted for participation in the Paddle Pop 2013 Young Builders Award competition, covering the Northern region (Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Perak), the East Coast region (Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan), the Southern region (Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor) and the Central region (Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Putrajaya). Competition organised in three stages The Paddle Pop 2013 Young Builders Award is open to all students aged 10 to 12 years, with entries submitted through schools. Each team is limited to a maximum of 4 students, with no limit to the number of entries per school. Based on the Dinoterra theme, the teams of students are required to create crafts using waste and recycled materials, including Paddle Pop ice cream sticks and wrappers. In the preliminary round, participants are required to create a miniature model of their entry using recycled materials. It can be in any size and must use at least one Paddle Pop ice cream stick in order to be eligible to participate. Participants must submit their entries comprising photographs of their creations by email to the organisers latest by 19 May 2013. From these submissions, 50 top entries will be selected for the next level, and will be notified by 24 May 2013. “The judges will be looking at the creativity of the teams in using the Paddle Pop ice cream sticks and wrappers and other waste material in their submissions, as well as the relevance of the projects to the Dinoterra theme. They will also look at the artistic quality of the work and the overall setting, as we would like the participants to interpret how the Dinoterra world looks like,” Tan added. He said Unilever Malaysia is targeting to receive at least 200 entries. The 50 teams with the best entries will join a compulsory 3-day 2-night art camp from 5 to 7 June 2013 where they will receive hands-on guidance on creating their final entry from experienced art teachers. In addition, they will get exposure to the creative arts and artistic techniques, as well as receive the opportunity to hone their soft skills such as communications and teamwork. Following the art camp, the 50 teams will be given 3 weeks to work on their final full-sized submission, before the finale judging to be held in July 2013. During the finale, all 50 entries will be exhibited for on-the-spot judging by the panel of judges. Similar to the preliminary round, the entries will be judged on creativity, relevance to the Dinoterra theme, artistic quality and overall setting. However, for the final round, all teams will also be required to give a presentation to the judges on their entry, which they will also be judged on. In the presentation, the students will be required to explain their interpretation of the theme, the materials used, the duration for completing the project, problems faced and the resolutions, and their application of knowledge gained at the art camp when creating their final submissions. Meanwhile, the teams are also encouraged to bring their schoolmates as supporters to make the finale more fun and exciting.
