Chaplain’s Corner by Hermann Dueck
Dear Residents and Fellow Employees at Concordia Village,
If you but trust in God to guide you and place your confidence in him,
You’ll find him always there beside you, to give you hope and strength within,
For those who trust God’s changeless love, build on the rock that will not move.
These lines are the first stanza of a hymn written by Georg Neumark, who lived during the 17 th century in
Germany. As a young man, Neumark was on his way to Koenigsberg to study at the university, when the
caravan that he travelled with was attacked and robbed, leaving him only his prayer book and a few coins.
Studies thwarted, Neumark wrote this hymn of trust and thanksgiving in 1641, when after seeking employment
in several cities, he finally found work as a tutor to the children of a well to do family. Neumark based this hymn
on Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you;…” It is a song of confidence that is still
firmly grounded in the reality of the difficulties of life.
This hymn has been a source of strength to millions of people close to over four centuries now. My parents
sang it, my faith community sang it, I learned it in my younger years and I find myself singing it up to this day
quite often and I will continue to sing it. It is an invitation to trust instead of giving in to worry and anxiety. To
worry or to trust, those are two options we are confronted with again and again in a world where life is
threatened, where things and we ourselves are fading. Will I trust or will I give in to worry and anxiety? That’s
the question. There are times when trusting comes almost naturally; when we are healthy, when relationships
go well, when we are financially secure, etc., but then there are times when we seem to give into worry and
anxiety. This depends to a significant degree on what we are faced with and what we experience. When illness
strikes, when we lose our independence, when loved ones die, when we face financial setbacks, when
relationships fall apart, when the world seems to go haywire, etc.; that’s when we need reminders such as
Neumark’s hymn as a new invitation to live by trust. Sometimes we worry before we have a reason to worry. In
spring farmers were worried that they wouldn’t get a crop because of the late spring, but here we are a few
months later witnessing a most bountiful crop all across the province. We are grateful for that. Next weekend is
Thanksgiving.
Trusting does not mean that our problems just disappear when we trust but we see them from a different
perspective. Trusting in God helps us to live with unsolved problems and find peace of mind. Thank you,
Georg Neumark, for your poem/hymn.
Love, your Spiritual Care Giver,
Hermann
Bereavement Support Group
I am planning to facilitate a bereavement support group this fall beginning Monday, October 21, 10:00am. We
will meet for six weeks. If you have lost a loved one such as a spouse, sibling, or child in the last few years you
might want to enquire about this group. The purpose of a group like this is to care for each other in the journey
of grief and recovery and to learn about the grieving process in a safe and supporting environment. If you are
interested in attending, or if you are unsure about attending, please come and talk
to me.
Talent Night
There will be a Talent Night in the Garden Café on October 22, at 7:00pm. If you
play an instrument, write poetry or sing please let me know. More local talent is
needed and desired.

Food Services News by Carla Mendres
Food Service Updates
We have some new team members that have joined the Food Services Department. Please
welcome Holly, Palma, Helen, Poznma, Salome, Paige, Alexandra, Brandie and Ruth!

Half portions are available for most meals. Please don’t hesitate to ask your server!

If you have any special dinner requests please don’t hesitate to ask the cooks if there’s
something different you need. Come talk to them in the morning to see how they can
accommodate you!

If you require a meal for take-out please do not take china from the dining room. We are
missing several bowls, plates, etc. Please ask a server for a disposable
container. If you have anything that belongs to the dining room in your suite kindly
return them as soon as possible. Thanks!

Each morning we provide copies of the Winnipeg Free Press for you to enjoy over breakfast.
They are intended for everyone to enjoy so please don’t take them from the
dining room.

At the last Resident Advisory Council meeting, it was noted that a microwave available in each
dining room may be a benefit to residents. If you think this is something you would use regularly,
please contact Carla at (204) 667-7479 or cmendres@concordiavillage.ca.

At breakfast time please use the tongs provided to choose your food. It is very
important that residents refrain from using their bare hands to touch food. Using tongs helps to
prevent bacteria and viruses from being transferred from one person to the next. When you are
done using the tongs please be sure to place them back in the provided
containers. Using the provided hand sanitizer is also an effective way to guard yourself from cold
and flu germs.

Breakfast is intended to be enjoyed in the dining room. If you prefer to take your
breakfast back to your suite, a server will be happy to package a breakfast for you to take with
you.

We always welcome dinner guests. Please remember to write the information down in the
reservation book by noon of the day prior. It is imperative we know when you plan to have dinner
guests so that we can prepare enough food. If you would like to have guests for dinner the same
day, please call the kitchen and ask if we can accommodate your guests. If you would like to have
a group of 6 or more, please book the private dining room. This can be done at the front desk.
If you have any questions about nutritional needs or if you have a modified
diet and need some help making the best food choices for your individual
needs, please call Carla at 667-6479, extension 2227.

Resident Advisory Council by Glenn Nicholls
In the summer newsletter, your attention was brought to two funding announcements;
The Molson St. upgrading and the construction of Concordia Village IV. We now know that
the Molson St. project has been postponed to next year when, once again, we will need
assurance of close monitoring of traffic through the Village. The new construction seems to
be progressing and upon its completion and occupancy, we will be looking at how the safety
and security of our residents is being assured.
Several meetings have been held with council members and the Leadership Team in
relation to the report of the 2012 Resident Satisfaction Survey. I feel that several of our
concerns have been met, while other concerns continue to be reviewed by the leadership
team. Perhaps the most important result is that this year’s survey report will be more
meaningful, showing both percentages and numbers of individual resident responses.
Concerns about the low numbers of residents attending Resident Advisory Council Meetings
should diminish in November when Birthday Teas and Council meetings will be held at the
same time!
On a personal note, Marg and I are very appreciative of the warm wishes we have received
on our recent marriage. We feel blessed!

Library Information
Thank you for using our library and for all of the donations that help
support it. Our shelves are looking quite full and the selection is great. We have
large print books, German books and magazines, as an added feature. Our
library began in 2009 with 350 donated books. By 2010 that number had grown
to 615 and today we have a total of 1415 books with 838 in
circulation.
For new residents we are located in CVII on the 3rd floor opposite the elevator.
The library is open at all times but volunteers are available Wednesday’s
1:00pm – 3:00pm. Books are always free, however, we require that you sign
out each book and return it within 3 weeks. Returned books go to into the Red
Bin marked ‘returns’. Signature is not required.
Thank you,
Clara Brazeau

Environment Services News by Ernie Goetz , Tammy Stolwyk and Glen Desrochers
Fall greeting to all Residents from the Environment Services Team!!!!
This summer has come and gone much faster then we would have liked.
Fall reminds us that we are entering the season of “Thanksgiving”. I hope and pray that we all may have experienced
enough good this past summer in order to be grateful?!!
We would like to give you a quick update on some of the things that have gone on during the summer and a few
reminders of how to prepare for the coming winter.
Completed Projects from the summer months:
1.
Back-up generators: Many of you might be wondering what a back-up generator is? A back-up generator is a
huge motor fueled by diesel that produces electricity for our buildings in case of a Manitoba Hydro power outage. These
generators are installed and ready to go. I will attach a fact sheet for those of you who are interested in such information.
CONCORDIA VILLAGE – GENERATOR INFO
- CVI – 250 KW diesel stand by generator
- CVII and CVIII – 275 KW diesel stand by generator
These are a few items in our Building that will function in a case of a Power failure:
Vestibule/lobby lighting
All dining room lighting
Dining room roof top air units
All kitchen lighting
Night lights (approx. 30% of all lighting in the hallways)
Fire alarm panel
Door magnets
Door operators
One elevator (CVII) and One Elevator (CV I)
- Fuel capacity is 500 gallons per generator
- Fuel consumption is approximately 15-20 gallons of diesel fuel per hour
- With a full tank of fuel and depending on the load, we are good for 25-30 hours of continuous run time
- Upon power failure, there will be approximately 3 seconds of delay before power is transferred to the generator. This
will happen automatically.
- Once power is restored, power will automatically switch back to regular power. The generators will continue to run for a
period of time to ‘cool down’ before they shut down.

2.
Garden Café sound system: We have installed a new, user friendly sound system in our Garden
Café . If any of you have avoided Church programs or any other Recreational programs in the past because
of not being able to hear, please come and see what has changed. If you need a personal device to enable
you to hear, they are now available so that you can enjoy all the programs. Please feel free to talk with the
program coordinators about the new hearing devices available.
3.
Landscaping Improvements: I have enjoyed seeing many of our Residents on their walk through
our grounds. We have made many changes and improvements in the back of CV II and CV III. We would like
to thank everyone who has taken the time to encourage us and thank us for these improvements. It truly has
motivated and inspired us knowing that we were making positive changes. We think the
improvements look beautiful and can’t wait to see what our grounds will look like in a few years when the
trees start maturing. Who knows, it might become a popular place for Family portraits or maybe even
wedding pictures??
4.
Security Improvements: To enhance the security of our building and give the Residents that live on
the outside rim of the main floor peace of mind, we will be replacing the lights on each balcony, with a night
light which works on an automatic sensor and timer. What this means is that the timer will sense when it gets
dark outside and will turn the light on automatically during the night and will turn it off in the morning. This
security lighting will only be installed on the outside rim of the main floor balconies, starting from CV I facing
North all the way around to the CV III suites facing South.
5.
Staffing changes: We are always challenged and worried with finding the right staff to join our
team. It is often hard on all of us to have staff who we trust and appreciate, decide to move on to a new career challenge. We have had 2 of our fulltime staff move on to new opportunities and would just like to take
this moment to “Thank” both Odele Kaplun from CV II main floor and Wera Friesen from CV III 3 rd floor for
their dedicated service over the last few years. Having lost 2 staff members has also allowed us to welcome
2 new fulltime staff. We welcome and thank both Shuren Fang (we call her Shu) CV II main floor and Silvia
Agustin CV III 3rd floor for being willing to share their compassion and services with us here at Concordia
Village. We also welcome our newest casuals, Ulrike Neufeld and Branda Sawatzky to the team, they will be
helping out throughout the building when needed.
6.
Fire/ Life Safety: We have completed all annual fire/ life safety inspections in September and are
extremely happy they are done. We thank all Residents for your patience, understanding and support on this
important annual inspection. We have just begun training sessions for all Residents on “What to do in case
of a Fire”. The training is provided by our Building Fire Marshal Glen Desrochers and Mr. Jim Vanderbeek.
We will invite smaller groups, one floor per building at a time so that every Resident has the opportunity and
enough time to ask any and all questions that may worry them. We started the training on Thursday Sept.
26th and we believe it went very well. Many questions were asked and answered which was important. The
Fire Safety Procedure sheet is attached to this newsletter.

Environment Services cont’d
As we prepare for the winter season, we encourage Residents with cars, to ask your service providers when
taking in your car for service, to check out the block heater and cord on your vehicle. We noticed a few cars
last winter with cords/ block heaters not working properly. If you are not sure if your block heater works or
have a damaged cord and you are not planning on taking your vehicle in for service, what to look for:
When you plug in your car, the plug has 2 lights, a green light that flashes and a red light right underneath.
When you plug in your car, the green light will stay on, but should stop flashing. If it continues to flash, that
means there is a bad or no connection between your cord and block heater. If the light turns red, it means you
have a damaged cord that needs to be replaced. I hope this makes sense to all the car owners. If you are
unsure, please feel free to talk to our maintenance team.
On behalf of our entire Environment Services Team, we sincerely thank all Residents for the Trust and
Support given to all of us as we enter into your Homes to provide our service!!!!
I will end my report with a quote that has always inspired me:
Success can be measured not only in achievements,
but in lessons
We’re on the Web!
learned, Lives touched and moments shared along the way!!!!!

I wish all Residents and Families good health and a heart filled with Thanksgiving as we enjoy the beauty of
our Fall Season.

FIRE SAFETY PROCEDURE – RESIDENTS
-If there is a fire in your suite, leave the suite immediately, do not lock the door. Pull
the nearest ‘pull station’ and proceed to a common area. The fire department will
arrive shortly.
-If you are in your suite and you hear the fire alarm, and the fire is not in your suite,
stay there. Please unlock your door. Feel the hallway door; if it’s hot, there is a chance
the fire is nearby, do not open the door. If smoke is entering your suite, open a window
if you are able to. If opening the window makes the smoke worse, close the window
and proceed to your balcony. If possible call 911 and inform them that you are on your
balcony and need assistance. The fire department will arrive shortly.
-If you are in a common area, such as the garden café, dining room, MPR, etc, and
the fire alarm sounds, and there is no fire in that room, stay there. If the fire is in that
area, please stay as a group and all proceed to another common area, and wait for
further instruction. The fire department will arrive shortly.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
-When
the fire alarm sounds, the fire department is contacted immediately.
-The fire department is close by and the normal response time is approximately 4 to 6
minutes.
-Do not block the stairways, as fire fighters use the stairs to access all floors. The only
time residents should be in the stairwell is if there is immediate danger. The stairwell is
a safe area.
-If you are in the elevator when the fire alarm sounds, the elevator will automatically
go to the main floor. Please exit the elevator and head to a common area, only if it is
safe to do so.
-As soon as the fire alarm sounds, the elevators will go to the main floor and will be
out of service.
-The buildings at Concordia Village have a sprinkler system. If there is a fire, the
sprinkler will start spraying water in the area of the fire and not the entire building.
-If you hear the fire alarm, treat it as a real fire. Please practice what you have been
instructed to. Once the bells go silent, all is clear, the danger is over.
IN CASE OF FIRE, PLEASE CALL 911
