The Coaching Staff
Head Coach Steve Shaw
When Steve Shaw arrived at Christopher
Newport in 1996, one of his main goals was
to rebuild the Captains’ soccer team into a
nationally prominent program. He accomplished this in 2000 when he took his squad
to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
By advancing to the Elite Eight, Shaw
accomplished something that no other CNU
athletic team had ever done at that time.
The Captains posted their best record in
history in 2000, going 18-3-1, playing another power-packed schedule.
The Dixie Conference recognized his efforts
once again by naming him Coach of the
Year.
CNU also had another first in its soccer
history, the first ever night game. With the
addition of lights, and one of the finest facilities around, CNU was able to host its first
three NCAA Tournament games in 2000.
Shaw took his squad back to the NCAA
Tournament in 2006, when his squad re-
ceived an at-large bid. The Captains won their
first game but lost in the second round.
A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Shaw
came to CNU in 1996 following six seasons as
an assistant at William & Mary. His first team
at CNU surprised everyone by going 13-5,
just one year after the program had suffered
through a 5-11 season. That squad cracked the
NCAA South Region Top 10 for the first time in
many years.
Shaw’s imprint on the William & Mary program is evident by the fact the team went 8632-14 in his six seasons there. Shaw was one
of the key architects that turned the program
into a national power.
Shaw can also be seen working with young
people throughout the Tidewater community,
mentoring young soccer players from the inner
city as well as the Virginia Legacy Soccer Club.
He has also made two trips to Africa where
he has conducted clinics and donated soccer
equipment while working with the International
Young Life Organization and working with kids
in Honduras.
In 11 seasons, Shaw has amassed an overall
record of 139-65-10, by far the best record in
men’s soccer history at CNU. His coaching career has spanned 30 years and has produced
a record of 324-133-40.
Shaw was also an outstanding player at
Morehead State, where he was nominated for
All-America honors.
He spent two years with the LaLiga Alajuelense Youth Reserve team in Costa Rica and
played for the Kentucky Kickers, the state’s
amateur champions.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Shaw
earned his masters from Eastern Kentucky.
He is fluent in Spanish and also has a working
knowledge of French, Portuguese and Italian.
Shaw and his wife Alice reside in Newport
News, VA.

Another one of head coach Steve
Shaw’s former players returns for his
fourth season as an assistant coach.
Ryan Hagerty, a Virginia Beach, VA.,
native, takes
over as top man
for Head Coach
Steve Shaw.
Hagerty was
instrumental in
the Captains’ run
to the Elite Eight
in 2000, anchoring a defense
that allowed just
18 goals in 22
games. Hagerty
finished his
three-year CNU
career with three goals.
He led his team to a state championship
in high school, and also garnered First
Team All-Beach District as well as first
team all-state honors while at Kempsville
H.S..
Hagerty is currently an eighth grade History teacher at Crittenden Middle School
in Newport News.
Returning to the bench after a hiatus is
former CNU goalkeeper Brian Shumate.
Shumate played for Head Coach Steve
Shaw from 2000-2004. He finished his career
on a positive note
as he earned First
Team All-USA
South. Shumate
had a 1.24 GAA,
93 saves and nine
shutouts in 2004.
As a junior, Shumate was also a
First Team All-Conference choice and
was also selected
Third Team All-Region. He was also
named the MVP of
the Blue Marlin/VA Wesleyan Classic in 2003.
He finished his career with an overall record
of 24-12-5. He had a 1.21 GAA and totaled
14 shutouts and stopped 177 shots.
Shumate graduated from CNU with a degree in Business Finance.
Chezem returns to CNU after a stint away
from campus for his first season on the Captains’ bench.
He, too, was a four-year player for Head
Coach Steve
Shaw from 20002004. Chezem, a
freshman, helped
anchor the Captains defense that
advanced to the
Elite 8 in 2000.
He was a First
Team All-USA
South pick as a
senior in 2004.
In 2003, Chezem
was again a
First Team AllConference pick, named to the USA South’s
All-Tournament Team and was also a Third
Team All-South pick.
Chezem graduated with a degree in Business Marketing.

The History of the USA South
The USA South Athletic Conference, formerly known as the Dixie Conference, was formed in 1963 when six schools with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined
as the founding members. These colleges were: Charlotte College (presently UNC Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College, Lynchburg College, North Carolina
Wesleyan College and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The basis of the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, thus no athletically related
financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. This philosophy still exists today.
The conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time the NCAA formed
the Division III concept, which allowed membership only for non-athletic scholarship schools. The Dixie Conference joined this new arrangement, and in so doing, it became one
of the first conferences to be accepted in Division III. From the beginning of the Division, the Dixie Conference has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding
reputation, regionally and nationally.
The conference sponsored athletic programs for men students only until 1983. The NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s programs on the Division III level in that
year, and the Dixie Conference followed that lead by also including women’s sports. Many of the members’ teams have gained excellent recognition in these sports.
Each year the conference not only recognizes the participants for outstanding athletic achievements, but academic achievements are also emphasized. Those student athletes
who maintain academic averages of 3.0 or better are named to the All-Academic team. This group annually averages well over 300 in number.
The Dixie Conference recently was renamed in 2003 to the USA South Athletic Conference.
The conference is presently led by Commissioner Rita Wiggs and President Bob McEvoy, of Methodist College.
Christopher Newport Men’s Soccer 2007
31
Few, if any, Division III schools have
had the overall success of the Christopher Newport athletic program.
Through the end of the 2006-07
season, CNU teams had won 12
national championships, either won
or shared 150 conference titles and
have produced an amazing number
of individual accomplishments.
CNU athletes have won All-America
recognition an amazing 516 times
and have captured 64 individual
national championships.
In the USA South Athletic Conference, CNU has won ten consecutive
President’s Cups and 14 of the last
23. Statewide, in Virginia, Christopher Newport has had the best wonloss record of any school in the state
for six of the last ten years.
Nationally, CNU teams have made
59 NCAA appearances since 1982,
not counting hundreds of individuals
in track, cross country and golf.

Location
CNU’s 260-acre campus is located in
Newport News, Va., two and a half

include state-of-the-art residential
facilities, a $16 million sports and convocation center, the new Ferguson
Center for the Arts, and residential
facility restaurants and stores. Opening
in fall 2006 is a state-of-the-art student
union; and an expansion project that
will double the size of CNU’s library is
scheduled for completion in fall 2007.
History
Founded in 1960 as a two-year branch
of the College of William and Mary,
CNU became independent in 1977 and
gained university status in 1991. Today,
CNU is the youngest comprehensive
university in the Commonwealth.
Ferguson Center for the Arts
The $60 million Ferguson Center for
the Arts is the crowning jewel of
Christopher Newport University.
Teaching and learning are celebrated in
the 1,700-seat Concert Hall, 440-seat
Music and Theatre Hall, 200-seat
Studio Theatre, classrooms, sound-isolated music practice spaces, rehearsal
halls, dance studios, costume shops,
lighting labs and set design studios.
The Center’s inaugural season, which
began in September 2005, included
world-class classical, pop, Broadway
and dance performances, attracting
more than 120,000 patrons and ticket
revenue in excess of $3.2 million.
Class Size
With an average class size of 25 students, CNU has much smaller classes
than most state universities. More than
90 percent of classes are seminars, and
no classes are taught by graduate teaching assistants.
Athletics
CNU athletes compete in 21 NCAA
sports, including football, lacrosse and
sailing. The University ranks fifth
nationally in NCAA Division III Team
Championships, and the school has
produced 500 All-Americans.
Facilities
With a $400 million building campaign
nearly complete, CNU’s campus is

satellite cable TV, digital local phone
service, 24-hour security, and electronic room access. All rooms are equipped
with a microwave and mini-refrigerator
or have kitchen access.
Faculty
Eighty-five percent of CNU’s 932 faculty members hold the Ph.D. or highest
degree in their fields. Fifty-five new

since 2003.

Newport University offers a variety of

and their parents pay for college; 43
percent of students receive some form
of aid.
Campus Life

utstanding teaching with a
strong commitment to undergraduate education and the liberal studies core are the hallmarks
of Christopher Newport University.
A dramatic transformation spanning the past decade has placed it
among the United States’ pre-eminent liberal arts universities.
As the youngest university in the
Commonwealth of Virginia’s excellent system of higher education,
CNU is getting better, not bigger.
CNU offers an unbeatable combination of great teaching, small
classes and a commitment to
placing students first, which
means that the quality of teaching,
advising and student life is the
University’s first concern. Classes
average only 25 students, and are
taught by faculty members – 85
percent of which hold a doctorate
or the highest degree in their field
– not teaching assistants.
These scholars desire to engage
and challenge students inside and
outside the classroom and are
committed to playing an active
role in campus life.
