RSG will celebrate 75 years of Afrikaans radio broadcasting in October this year. The radio station without borders started out as the SABC’s B-Service in 1937. It was known as the “Afrikaanse Diens van die SAUK” (Afrikaans Service of the SABC) for many years until it became known as “Radio Suid-Afrika” (Radio South Africa) in 1986. In the early 1990’s, it changed its name to “Afrikaans Stereo” and then took on its slogan “Radio Sonder Grense” or RSG as commonly known as its new name after the SABC Radio restructuring in 1996. The Afrikaans radio has come a long way since the days with its first station manager, Kowie Marais, to the current format and style under the leadership of station manager, Magdaleen Krüger. The Afrikaans radio service was formed as a cultural offering with the purpose to inform, educate and entertain. RSG still has this total offering, with programming that is relevant, empowering, informative and compelling. The music offering is a key component, with an average of 70% local music. Afrikaans music has a very strong following in the country and offers a wide varierty of sub-genres for its loyal audience. Afrikaans music thus also forms part of the music offering on RSG and is supported at festival participation as well as on-air. On the first Friday of every month, RSG only plays local music from 5:00-22:00. Other music genres also vary from Afrikaans, classical, opera, popular and country, to gospel, jazz and world music. But that’s enough about the past 75 years….there are very exciting times lying ahead for both listeners and the industry! • The very popular afternoon drive time show, Tjailatyd will be extended by an hour; now on weekdays from 15:00-18:00, boasting with more music, competitions, short features, traffic and weather updates. • The lifestyle show from 9:00-12:00 will also undergo a revamp to include more music, features and humour. VAN ZERO TOT HERO, IN STEREO • A very exciting offering is the introduction of laid back music from the 80’s and 90’s to be aired in the evenings at 22:00 when listeners can just “Tjil”. • The classical music, literature, art and drama offerings move earlier between the 20:00-22:00 slot for connoisseurs’ appreciation. • A specialist music programme will be aired on Monday’s at 21:10 that will alternate in series’ of 13 episodes, focusing on cult, jazz, blues, rock, hip-hop and rap music respectively. • The self-help phone-in shows that focus on matters of the heart, the mind, job search and finding people and things, also move slightly earlier to 23:00. As one of the leading radio stations, RSG offers immediacy and flexibility to advertisers and the media, which gives it a competitive advantage over TV and print media. Innovative, exciting promotions and competitions with cash prizes or desirable offerings such as holidays are generally welcomed by the RSG listener. Besides classical advertising and sponsored OBs, opportunities exist for live reads, sponsorships, advertorials, features, interviews, guests on shows or providing content for shows. RSG’s website also offers flexible advertising opportunities. RSG has great people – with a passion for their language and a passion for radio. We strive to offer quality through the various programmes and many genres of music offering. Whether it’s a children’s story for a tween or a specialist award-winning drama – RSG has something for everyone that tunes in. We will continue to interact with our listeners to bring them programs and music that will touch their hearts and change their lives. We will continue to move with times, embrace digital offerings and give back to the community. We will continue to strive to be the preferred radio station to listen to for all who understand Afrikaans. We will continue to be the one – RSG, dis die een! RSG strives to be the preferred radio station to listen to for all who understand Afrikaans… it is an all in one radio station and it is this distinct difference from commercial stations that brings the success. - Magdaleen Krüger, RSG Station Manager
