Session Description:
Cutting prices to gain sales and market share is a common tactic and is
often motivated by the assumption that cost leaders will survive to rule
the market. Sadly, the end-game shows this is rarely the case. Lessons
learned from other industries show that price competition leads to
margin erosion, commoditization, and can weaken all players in the
market.
This session will discuss how price competition weakens markets and the common mistakes
that falsely lead firms to engage in price competition. Professor Silk will present best practices
that can be used to maneuver out of price wars, mitigate price comparisons, and restore profit
margins.
Bio:
Professor Silk teaches brand management, new product development and consumer behavior
at the Sauder School of Business. An award-winning teacher, he has taught at and consulted
for major organizations including Bell Canada, Best Buy, Velux, and Visa. He is a leading
expert on competition regulation and has helped shape policy for Canadian and US
government agencies.
