Dental Biomaterials: From Scientific Evidence to Clinical Practice
—A New Study Club in Vancouver and Surrey
Dr. Ricardo Carvalho and Dr. Adriana Manso
This blended seminar-lecture based study club will cover the most updated scientific literature available
for an evidence-based practice regarding dental biomaterials. As most of the restorative dentistry
procedures rely on adequate material selection and clinical handling, we will provide an immediate
clinical application for optimal results. The topics will cover a review of the most current scientific
literature, material selections, and recommendation of clinical procedures. Each 3.5-hour session
will be broken down into a seminar and lecture sessions. Clinical cases will be used to explore the
decision-making process that was used to determine the best approach in terms of materials selection
and techniques used to achieve the best resolution. Participants will be encouraged to bring their own
clinical cases and questions related to dental biomaterials for group discussions.

There are a number of oral soft tissue lesions
that occur relatively frequently and it is
important for a dentist to understand the
approach to achieve a definitive diagnosis and
recommend a course of therapy based on that
diagnosis. Common oral lesions have several
features in common with more significant
diagnoses so differentiation is critical. Once
the definitive diagnosis is established common
lesions each have a particular approach to
treatment. This presentation will cover some
common oral lesions and establish a differential
diagnosis for each of them. The best clinical
approaches to establish a final diagnosis will be
discussed. The different approaches to therapy
based on the final diagnosis will be presented.
Common oral lesions can be managed in a
general dental practice and the most critical
aspect is establishing a definitive diagnosis.

appearance, function, and comfort
considerations. Today, practitioners must possess
the skills to adequately provide such services or
be a willing quarterback. This two-part evidencebased presentation will overview current
concepts in multi and interdisciplinary oral care
such as TMD/orofacial pain, single and multitooth dentistry, and prognosis.
MICHAEL J. RACICH, DMD, FAGD is
a 1982 graduate from University of
British Columbia and has a general
dental practice emphasizing
comprehensive restorative dentistry,
prosthodontics, and TMD/ orofacial pain. Dr.
Racich is a member of many professional
organizations and has lectured nationally and

Illicit Drugs and the Dental Patient
Dr. Mark Donaldson
This program looks at some of these most
challenging patients, their most common negative
oral health sequelae due to illicit drug use, and the
management of these patients with a particular
focus on the dental realm. Case studies will
augment the delivery of key points and a problembased learning approach is encouraged so that
each participant’s questions are addressed. Most
importantly, you will learn applicable strategies
to successfully treat these complex patients on
Monday morning.
The Art of Dental Therapeutics: Patient
Assessment, Drugs, Herbals, and Interactions
This interactive program looks at some of the more
common drugs, herbals, and interactions and their
management with a particular focus on the dental
realm. Case studies will augment the delivery of
key points and a problem-based learning approach
is encouraged so that each participant’s questions
are addressed. The program will conclude with a
discussion of references and databases. After all,
when an adverse drug reaction occurs due to a
drug interaction, who is more at risk - you or your
patient?
MARK DONALDSON, BSP, RPH, ACPR,
PHARMD, FASHP, FACHE received his
baccalaureate degree from The
University of British Columbia, and his
Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy from

Provisionalization to Maximize Esthetics
and Minimize Post Delivery Mechanical
Complications for Replacement of the
Maxillary Implant Incisor
Dr. Matthew Illes
Temporization of a single unit, maxillary, implant
incisor for the purpose of development of the soft
tissues is well-known, and widely accepted, as
a necessary procedure to optimize the esthetic
result of treatment. Dr. Illes will focus his
presentation on this specific provisionalization
procedure and will review the clinical steps
involved in achieving the above esthetic objective.
He will also discuss the lesser-known, and
lesser appreciated, benefits of maxillary incisor
provisionalization. Dr. Illes will explain the
importance of establishing both the incisal edge
position and lingual contour of the single unit,
maxillary incisor through provisionalization.
He will review the impact that the contours
of occlusion have with respect to selection of
permanent restoration design, material(s), and
construction technique.

Posterior Restorative Material: Ceramic or
Resin?
Dr. Ricardo M. Carvalho
Because of the high demand for aesthetic
restorations, there is a common sense that the
choice for posterior restorative material should
be either resin composites or ceramics. The
question, however, remains as to which of these
options should be preferred for each individual
case. Although both materials satisfy the esthetic
requirements, there are significant differences
between them that should be addressed in the
decision making process of selecting the right
choice. This presentation will review those
differences and discuss the implications they have
for the clinical success of the restorations.

Adhesive Interfaces in Dentistry
Dr. Adriana Pigozzo Manso
Adhesive Dentistry encompasses multiple
procedures applied daily in General and Esthetic
Dentistry as well as in Prosthodontics. These
procedures may sometimes include multiple
interfaces involving dental structures, dental
adhesives, resin cements, primers/silanes, and
the restorative dental materials. In some cases,
the combination of these adhesive materials
may render the bonding incompatible, thus
compromising the success of the final restoration.
Also, not all bonding substrates are the same,
making it important to fully understand the most
challenging ones. This seminar is designed to
update information about restorative interfaces
and to explain the bonding mechanisms and
substrates involved in the procedures that will
lead to a successful bonding assembly. Scientific
concepts will enable you to provide an evidencebased service and an overview of the role of
the adhesive interfaces in dentistry in order to
simplify your decision-making process when
facing daily challenging clinical situations.

Porcelain Veneers: A Step By Step Approach
LIMITED ENROLMENT
Dr. Nariman Amiri
Porcelain veneers offer our patients a valid option to improve the colour, shape, and alignment of their
anterior teeth. However, it is essential for a successful treatment to follow an appropriate case selection
and to implement specific clinical protocols. Clinicians need to master how to properly treatment
plan and execute tooth preparation, impression, temporization, and cementation to achieve expected
outcomes.
The focus of this hands-on program is to provide general dentists with key factors in achieving
predictable esthetic outcomes with porcelain veneers. In the didactic section of this full day
course, a comprehensive review of prosthodontic treatment planning as well as indications and
contraindications for porcelain veneers will be provided. A systematic approach to tooth preparation,
impression, temporization, and cementation will be discussed. The hands-on component will be
focused on reparation, impression, and temporization of typodonts on the maxillary anterior teeth.

Current Concepts in the Management of Extraction Sockets:
Lecture (unlimited enrolment)
Dr. Daniele Cardaropoli
After tooth extraction, bone resorption of varying amounts always occurs since the edentulous
site of the alveolar process undergoes both qualitative and quantitative changes. In order to have a
correct endosseous implant positioning, prosthetically guided with a correct crown-to-root ratio
and aesthetically maintainable with a good soft tissue support, an adequate width of the surgical site
is essential. Ridge preservation and augmentation procedures aim to compensate for alveolar ridge
remodeling and to rebuild a proper bone anatomy prior to implant placement. The presentation will
review recent researches on the use of bone substitutes and a novel collagen tridimensional matrix,
showing the possibility to promote both soft tissue and bone healing, in order to provide an optimal
implant rehabilitation with aesthetic satisfaction.
Extraction Socket Management with Ridge Preservation/Ridge
Augmentation: A Hands-on Workshop
LIMITED ENROLMENT
Would you like to improve patient outcomes by learning to repair
unsightly post-extraction bony defects with ridge preservation and augmentation techniques?
After finishing this course you will achieve more predictable prosthetic and aesthetic outcomes for
your patients through careful management of the extraction site following tooth removal. You will
gain practical experience on 1) extraction site preparation, 2) biomaterial selection and placement, and
3) closure of various types of defects.
Please note you will be working on pig jaws.

Minimally Invasive Adhesive and Esthetic Dentistry: A Contemporary
Approach Dedicated to Maximum Hard and Soft Tissue Preservation
Dr. Abdi Sameni
The young and intact natural tooth displays
an intimate interplay between enamel, a
rigid “crystal” like structure, and dentin, a
flexible “plastic” like structure. As patients get
older, decay, erosion, fractures, and frictional
wear are the primary diseases that disturb
and destroy this delicate balance. Once
this balance is compromised, the integrity
of the natural tooth is adversely affected,
often to the point of requiring restorative or
esthetic treatments. Until fairly recently, all
available restorative techniques and materials
required further tooth removal as part of
the treatment. Direct restorations required
mechanical retention via retentive undercuts
and indirect restorations required healthy
tooth removal for fixed restorations. In many
instances, the cure resulted in further damage;
loss of pulp vitality, cuspal fractures, and
periodontal inflammatory diseases secondary
to subgingival restorative crown margins are
some examples.
The objective of this course is to review
and present different treatment options
that are available to restore the damaged
tooth with minimal or no further reduction
of the remaining healthy tooth structure
using adhesive concepts and materials. A
biomimetic approach will be discussed and
demonstrated through various clinical cases.
At the conclusion of this thought provoking
presentation, the participants will become
familiar with concepts that will challenge
traditional concepts for restorative care. This
paradigm shift will ultimately result in safer,
more conservative therapies, which respect and
reproduce the natural tooth’s biomechanical,
functional and esthetic properties more closely
than ever before.
ABDI SAMENI, DDS FACD is Clinical
Associate Professor of Dentistry and a
graduate of the Ostrow School of
Dentistry at USC. He has been a
