But you want it to be the right kind of experience – one that prepares you for work and for life. At RMIT, these are the changes you can count on: YOUR PROSPECTS RMIT programs are designed in consultation with industry leaders and taught by practising professionals. You’ll gain skills that will make you highly employable and will help you stand out in a crowded job market. YOUR OUTLOOK You’ll meet people from different countries and cultures, both on campus and by exploring the world thanks to RMIT’s global connections, partnerships and study exchange programs. YOUR FUTURE From mentorship programs and study tours to paid work placements and internships, you will have the opportunity to build professional networks that give you a head start in your chosen career or help you launch your own business. A Career Kickstart Befor e You Graduate Education That Gets You Noticed Skills That Make Companies Like Google Seek You Out No matter where you come from, RMIT’s work-integrated learning, projects with industry partners, and graduate and employer networks will help you follow your own unique path. What you learn at university needs to reflect what’s happening in the world of work. RMIT programs are always changing to reflect current and future industry developments and practices, so you’ll graduate with skills and experience that will get you noticed by the people who matter. That’s what happened for RMIT advertising students Hayley Carra, Azahn Munas and Kate Gillam (pictured above). Their innovative ad campaign, which was developed as part of their degree, sparked interest from advertising giant Ogilvy & Mather. After completing a study tour in Canada, RMIT marketing student Luke Tengstrom (pictured above) was searching for a new challenge. He ended up where every search begins – Google. Luke fought off 7000 other applicants to score the ‘holy grail’ of marketing internships at the search engine giant. Luke isn’t taking all the credit though – he puts his success down to his RMIT program’s strong grounding in the digital space and focus on employervalued skills such as creative thinking and problem-solving. Perhaps you’ll build a business while you study, like Information Technology (IT) students Henry Bezuidenhout and Michael MacRae (pictured above, left and centre), who developed their First Time Pregnancy app while at RMIT. The app quickly hit half a million downloads and helped launch their successful app development business. Student Profile “I love how RMIT is focused on industry connections, networking and life experience. You’re encouraged to use your initiative. I had to find opportunities, internships and work experience, which included an internship in the RMIT media department and writing for Catalyst magazine. “I also went on an exchange to Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. I wrote for the student publication and had a weekly column called Mim Meets Montreal. “While in Montreal, I received an email from RMIT asking if I’d like to be mentored by the CEO of News Corp, Robert Thomson. Robert said if you’re ever in New York, pop by the The Wall Street Journal and visit me. So I did. And because News Corp is involved with Vogue I asked Robert about internships there. Six months later, I’ve organised an internship at Vogue Australia in the editorial department. The connections RMIT has with institutions around the world are invaluable.” Mim Kempson Bachelor of Communication (Professional Communication) 3 GRADUATE WITH SO MUCH MORE THAN A PIECE OF PAPER Your potential is limitless. RMIT gives you a learning experience to match. Whether you’re l ooking to secure practical experience related to your program, collaborate with peers and industry, or pursue a passion that’s outside your field of study, RMIT supports you through every experience that takes you closer to where you want to go. Bring Ideas to Life Through the RMIT Business Plan Competition Are you studying business but designing sustainable furniture on the side? An arts student with an idea for a wellbeing app? Want to launch a range of active wear with a social conscience? The RMIT Business Plan Competition supports today’s start-ups and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs. The competition includes free seminars, networking opportunities and a prize pool of up to $100,000 to help you bring your business idea to life. Collaborate Outside the Classroom Sometimes, two heads really are better than one. Fashion graduate Jodie Hayes and advertising graduate Emma Bäcklund (pictured above) combined Jodie’s devotion to design, Emma’s marketing knowhow and their mutual love of the ocean to launch U&I, a unique female-only surfwear brand that empowers the women who wear it. The RMIT duo is already riding the wave of success in Australia, and is now looking to take the business to the world. Experiences That Put Your Ideas in the Spotlight Second year RMIT computer science student Josh Caratelli (pictured above), whose iPad game Smog Game won a National iAward, will now represent Australia on the world stage. Josh credits his industry-focused studies and the support he received at RMIT for the success of Smog Game. Mentors Who’ve Actually Been There No matter how prepared you are, the leap from university to the workforce can be challenging, and even a little daunting. Many RMIT alumni and graduates who have become industry leaders share their experiences and advice through the Alumni Mentoring Program. Mentors include News Corp Chief Executive, Robert Thomson; BHP Billiton Chair, Jacques Nasser; New York–based founder of The Fetch and CloudPeeps, Kate Kendall; former Edinburgh International Festival director, Sir Jonathan Mills AO; and self-made entrepreneurs including Georgia Beattie (pictured above), CEO of Beattie Wines, whose company was named a BRW Top 10 Start-Up. 5 ARE YOU READY TO SHAPE THE WORLD? Industry-designed courses. Business partnerships. Teachers who are leaders in their field. Experiences that encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. Industry and enterprise is at the heart of ev ery RMIT program. You’ll gain sector-specific insights, practical experience and skills that will give you an edge in a highly competitive job market. Above: Led by Nick Williams and John Cherrey, the FabPod engages a large research team to draw on expertise in acoustic design, digital manufacturing and craft techniques. 6 Ideas That Impress Inter national Brands Global Projects That Make a Difference Solutions That Change the Future A team of RMIT marketing and international business students impressed one of the world’s top beauty brands by winning the 2015 national L’Oréal Brandstorm competition – the fourth RMIT win in as many years. Team Vie de Luxe (pictured above) went on to represent Australia at the international final in Paris, where they pitched their concept to L’Oréal CEO Jean-Paul Agon. More than 1300 Fijian high school students celebrated the opening of a first-of-its-kind IT lab built by a team from RMIT. The landmark project enabled RMIT students to put their IT skills – including software and network fault finding, industry networking, software research and training – to the test in real life. The project has been so successful that the Fijian Government is considering replicating it in schools across the Pacific island nation. RMIT’s research projects focus on global problems. Some of our research solutions even go a step beyond – a gravity-loading SkinSuit for astronauts (pictured above), which was invented by aerospace engineer Dr James Waldie while he was studying at RMIT, is being trialled by an astronaut inside the International Space Station. It goes to show that with the right skills and support, the possibilities are limitless. 7 PREPARE TO TAKE YOUR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCES TO THE WORLD As an RMIT student, you’ll benefit from our worldwide digital and industry networks, programs and partnerships, which will help prepare you for the globalised world of work. Perhaps you’ll take a study tour to the Americas, study at RMIT V ietnam for a semester, or explore another country’s culture and gain insight through our inter national inter nship program. Make Your Mark on Melbour ne, and on the World Industry Experiences that Become a Design for Life Recent games and graphics programming graduate Cherie Davidson (pictured above), who attracted industry attention while studying at RMIT, has been named one of the 75 most influential women in the Australian and New Zealand games industries. Cherie undertook a four-month placement at award-winning UK game development studio Media Molecule as part of her degree, and they’ve since snapped her up as an associate producer. She plans to use the opportunity to gain insight into the international games industry, bring her skills back to our shores, and open her dream studio in Melbourne. RMIT graduates have again been awarded the Australian Fashion Foundation’s prestigious global internships, which have propelled numerous RMIT fashion graduates to the top of their field. Most recently, the internships helped Alexander Kelvy (pictured above, right) and Grace Butterworth follow in the footsteps of RMIT’s previous winners, who are now living out their career dreams at Calvin Klein in New York and Alexander McQueen in London. As a student with health issues, I found the staff to be extremely understanding, caring and accommodating, which allowed me to complete my VCE studies with the least amount of struggle and this was crucial to my academic success. I would highly recommend anyone who is wishing to go to university or vocational education, but is either unsure of which direction they want to go in or unable to directly get in to their chosen program, to complete their VCE at RMIT.” O m a r Mo u s t a f a Vi c t o r i a n C e r t i f i c at e o f Edu cat i o n Prerequisites: Applicants must be at least 17 years old on 1 January of the year of study.
