Ajax Building Corporation Earns Vision Award
For Paperless Construction Project on UF Campus
(GAINESVILLE, FL) – Oct. 19, 2011 – Ajax Building Corporation has won a Bronze Vision
Award from Constructech Magazine for its use of technology in going paperless while managing
construction of the $17.6 million University of Florida’s William R. Hough Hall. The award
honors companies that have realized the advantages of applying modern technologies to their
everyday businesses. Ajax won in the $100 to $200 million General Contractor category.
Ajax utilized the software, Penta Project Management Workbench, which allowed the Business
School’s Graduate Studies Building to go paperless. Project managers and field superintendents
tracked and logged documents and communications electronically in daily reports, streamlining
the process and saving thousands of dollars in energy-related costs. Remote managers were able
to be more productive by constantly reviewing the project’s status without having to go onsite.
Ajax estimates it saved 1,000 pounds of paper during the construction of Hough Hall, which was
completed in the summer of 2010 and since has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) Gold. The process was so successful that Ajax has used the paperless
system on all projects since then in both Florida and Georgia.
“Going paperless represented an entirely new challenge for Ajax management, field operations
and subcontractors,” said Ajax President Bill Byrne. “It created a better working environment for
veteran and new employees alike by dramatically simplifying the process of documenting critical
project documents and communications, allowing everyone involved to be more proactive in
managing the project.”
In making the awards, Constructech judges each entry on how the company has used technology
in an innovative way to solve a problem in order to improve their competitiveness or create a
better working environment for their employees. Entries are scored by independent judges
representing the construction industry, technology and education.
