Areas of study are entropy and the second law of thermodynamics, thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics and organic chemistry. Environmental issues associated with each of these topics will be incorporated into lectures when appropriate. The goal of the course is two-fold: z z To strengthen the student’s understanding of basic chemistry, important for any wellrounded applied science student, and directly applicable in every field of engineering. To apply chemical principles to a number of selected environmental issues and to stimulate each student’s thinking about them. https://moodle.queensu.ca/2014-15/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=25257 1/8/2015 Course Syllabus Page 5 of 9 Lecture and Tutorial Schedules z z 3 lectures weekly 1 tutorial weekly Lectures are grouped into sets or units, corresponding to the topic categories in the course. The units are presented in the Moodle site as tabbed sections. Some units take longer to finish than others. https://moodle.queensu.ca/2014-15/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=25257 1/8/2015 Course Syllabus Page 6 of 9 Evaluation • Quizzes (Weeks 5 and 11) • Mastering Chemistry • Midterm exam (Week 6) • Final examination 15% 5% 35% 45% https://moodle.queensu.ca/2014-15/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=25257 1/8/2015 Course Syllabus Page 7 of 9 Academic Integrity z z z To an engineering student, the most important event in their four years at Queen’s is receiving the iron ring. During the iron ring ceremony, engineering students graduating from a Canadian University, recite the Obligation of the Canadian engineer. The obligation is a solemn expression of intention to adhere to the highest ideals of the engineering profession. The iron ring, worn on the small finger of the working hand, is a reminder to the engineering graduate and is a sign to others that you have taken the Obligation. Because honesty is such an essential component in maintaining these high ethical standards, it is essential that each of you has a clear understanding about the amount of collaborative versus individual work that is expected of you by your instructor. Make sure that you NEVER act in a way that betrays the high ideals expected of you. Being called up on Academic Dishonesty charges, is an extremely unpleasant experience. The detailed outline of Academic Integrity Policies of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science may be found at: http://apsci.queensu.ca/policy/Honesty.html https://moodle.queensu.ca/2014-15/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=25257 1/8/2015 Course Syllabus Page 8 of 9 Registration with Disability Services If you are a special needs student, and require specific accommodations when writing examinations or quizzes or any other type of assignment, such as requiring more time, you must register with the Disability Services Office located in the LaSalle building on the Queen’s campus. The Web site can be found by following the link below. Disability Services web site Select the "Students" tab and then click on "Registration" Once you receive special accommodations: z z The Exams Office will automatically arrange accommodations for your final exam in April. Give a copy of your accommodation form to each of your professors and TAs. These individuals will arrange the required accommodations for you for all quizzes and midterm exams. Missed Evaluations If you are going to miss an evaluation of any kind because of illness, family tragedies, participation on Queen’s Intercollegiate University Teams, or for any other unforeseen or unpredictable event: z z Contact your Course Coordinator or TA immediately explaining the nature of the problem If the reason for missing an evaluation is deemed to be valid, the following remedies are available: 1. A rewrite of a quiz or midterm may be arranged at a later date. 2. An exemption may be given for the missed evaluation meaning that all other evaluations will be used to determine the final mark. 3. If a final examination is missed, you will be given an “IN” – incomplete and “a must complete by” deadline. Usually the missed examination will be made up by writing the “JSection” examination in June. Please notify the Professor of both your regular course and of the J-Section course if you will be writing the makeup exam. Your regular prof will have to submit the grade change for you to change your "IN" to a final grade. If you contact the J-Section Prof early enough, you may be able to attend any review sessions, if any, he/she will host before the exam. https://moodle.queensu.ca/2014-15/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=25257 1/8/2015 Course Syllabus Page 9 of 9 Required Course Materials The Required Course Materials link (Below) connects to the Campus Bookstore where you will see information on the text books and course resources you will need for APSC132, which is identical to the requirements for APSC131. APSC 131 Required Course Materials The Bookstore web site may not be the easiest to understand so let's break down your options in plain language. 1. purchase the paper text book new from the bookstore: { This gets you the book itself, { the answer key for all the end of chapter questions { a free access code you can use to register for the eText, which will allow you access to the book from anywhere, even a cell phone, without need to carry the heavy book around { a free access code for the Mastering Chemistry site (linked to within this moodle course only). 2. purchase only an access code for the eText and Mastering { This option gives you a cheaper option than the first one. You still get all the material you need for the course but you no longer get a paper text book. { If you choose this option, you may still be able to purchase a used text book but be very careful as the price of this option plus the used text may in fact be more expensive than just going with option 1. 3. purchase the Mastering only code. { This final option will not give you access to the eText. { You will only be able to access the Mastering problems themselves. { You will need to purchase a used Text book and a used Answer guide. While this option may turn out to be the cheapest option, it will involve more leg work on your part to ensure you have what you need and also you will lose the convenience of the on-line eText the first two options give you. https://moodle.queensu.ca/2014-15/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=25257 1/8/2015
