PRESIDENT’S
THOUGHTS
President’s Letter September 2015
August started out pretty calm as Cindy and I took
our first vacation in almost a decade. On the trip to
California and then meandering back driving all the
sections of old Route 66 from Barstow, CA to ABQ
we took over 2000 pictures of historic communities
that we will use to help identify visual and physical
attributes that could lend themselves to improving
our streetscapes for our downtown businesses. So look forward to a Chamber
presentation of what we discovered in the upcoming months. I think you will see
some ideas that truly can make our Belen streetscapes more appealing to both
our residents and those passing through.
Then, while still on the road, Rhona shared the onset of the battle over Belen and
Bethlehem with those who apparently prefer living in the darkness. Thanks also
to all of you who kept us up to date on a daily basis. A particular thanks goes out
to the on line version of the Valencia News Bulletin. We moved to Belen in
large part because of its Christian heritage, so well represented in the Belen town
name and its Spanish translation. I was sorry to have missed the community
gathering in support of the Nativity while on assignment in Denver but couldn’t
have been more proud of the more than 1000 that turned out for that event and of
the supportive messages delivered there. God continues to bless our little
community.
Looking in a different direction, the Belen Main Street Partnership, our partner
in developing tourism and economic growth for Belen, launched the Belen is
NM True I-25 Billboard the third week of August. It is located on I-25
northbound, approximately 2 miles south of the South Belen Exit. It is a
traditional hand painted billboard that just isn’t produced anymore and is truly a
work of art. I asked Rhona to share a picture of it with you all in this newsletter.
Lastly, please don’t forget Rio Abajo Days is rapidly approaching and Rhona
and I want to be sure you all plan to attend this very entertaining street fair on
Sept 26th. More on that in Rhona’s letter to you.

Greater Belen Chamber of Commerce Office News
To Our Dear and Cherished GBCC Family and Friends!!!
Rhona Baca Espinoza,
Executive Director of Greater
Belen Chamber of Commerce
First of all, thank you for your great support and friendship. The
huge turnout and response at our New Educator’s Luncheon Best in
the West was indicative of this. You are so appreciated!!! We
salute and honor our educators. They work so hard and mold our
future generations. A special thanks to State Employees Credit
Union as our Title Sponsor once again.
The GBCC- sponsored Valencia County Fair Parade was another
indicator of the community’s support. Wow!!! A special thanks to
our judges: Luz Chavez, Honorary Member of GBCC, Dolores Padilla, Pilot Club of Belen and
Matthew Medina , President of the Rotary Club of Belen. We honored Alfred and Theresa
Padilla of Pete’s Café as our Parade Marshal reflecting the theme of this year’s parade:
Celebrating our Cultures!!! Renee Antoinette’s School of Dance took first place for the
Commercial category, Belen FFA for School Groups, Grupo Charro for Horse Groups and Cannon
Christian Academy for Non-Profit!!! Thank you to all who came out and participated!!!
Now to our largest event of the year: Rio Abajo Becker Street Festival. It is always scheduled
for the last Saturday in September and this year’s is on track to be the best ever. We have
added new events and have improved existing ones such as the Classic and Custom Car Show
and Video Gaming Championships!!! It all begins at 12:00 noon and runs until 9:00 pm. We
will be offering a free raffle for a new 40’ Flat Screen and will be having a Dance Contest for
Jitterbug, Swing, Twist and Salsa!!! Great prizes for these contests!!! Award winning Black
Smuggler’s and Jaramillo Winery will be offering their wines at a huge Wine Garden.
The best part of Rio Abajo Becker Street Festival is that it is free admission and jam packed
with great events and vendors all day long. Come out and support it. We will continue to
accept vendor applications until the week of the event as well as sponsorships.
The success of these events is imperative to the continued operations of the Chamber. As long
as we are able to be successful in these fundraising efforts, membership dues can remain a
great value. Thank you for all you do.
Call the office if you have any questions or would like for us to send you a Rio Abajo Becker
Street Festival Schedule of Events!!!
Blessings Always,
Rhona Baca Espinoza

1. First impressions matter. Walk up to, and into, your
establishment with the eye of a customer. A customer perception is his reality, and a first impression is important
because it tends to linger in a customer’s memory. Ditto if
that fist interaction is on the phone, via chat, or via mobile.
2. Impressions before the first impression matter. Of course, there is no “before the first impression.”
But the first impression is very likely happening before you
realize it: how you’re portrayed online, how your grounds
look well before the front door. Disney even obsesses over
the route to their parks for this reason.

“People really enjoy taking the Rail Runner to Balloon Fiesta, as evident by the many requests
we’ve gotten for the service over the past several years”, says Dewey Cave, Executive Director

avoid the hassle of traffic and parking, and also experience the comfort and convenience that
the Rail Runner offers”.

Rio Abajo Days for 2015 will be here before we know it! This year our events and locations
for activities will be expanded from what they have been in previous years. The NM Video

located in the Heart of Belen at Main Street and along Becker Avenue, ONE DAY ONLY,
Saturday, September 26th, From 12:00noon ‘til 9:00pm. We anticipate that the crowds for
vendors will be bigger than ever before and that you as a vendor will see increased traffic to
your booth. We invite you to come to Belen and join us at the Rio Abajo Day Street Festival
as a vendor on Saturday, September 26, 2015.
We will be organizing all food booths together as a food court and non-food vendors
will all be together, as well, located close to the tents, carnival and gazebo areas. The
event will not be extended further than three blocks so that all vendors will have the
same opportunities to do well at the event.
