Plagiarism & APA Style
This handout briefly describes some major issues in plagiarism. For more information see the links below: http://www.plagiarism.org/
Tips to Avoid Trouble with Plagiarism
It is unacceptable to copy something out of a book, newspaper, journal, online, or any other source.
You must cite references of where you get information in the text - (Miller, 2009) and in the reference list – Miller, James. (2009). Do not plagiarize. Journal of Integrity, 6 , 1-10.
Use quotations if you use more than 5 words from another source.
Paraphrasing is not just changing a few words in a sentence, you need to reinterpret and rephrase the information.
Copying the same idea or paragraph from another person’s paper is plagiarism.
Turnitin.com will be used to enforce policies of academic integrity.
To avoid plagiarism:
A) EVERY time you use another source (even if you paraphrase) cite the source in the text by including the author(s) and year.
1 author (Miller, 2010)
2 authors (Miller & Stovall, 2010)
3 authors (Miller, Stovall, & Trueblood, 2010)
4 or more authors (Miller et al., 2010)
B) Include a reference list at the end of the paper that contains proper full citation of every source you got ideas and information from. If you have a source cited in your reference list then it should be cited in the text. If you have a source cited in the text then it has to be cited in your reference list.
Remember, plagiarism violates the academic integrity policy and plagiarism on ANY assignment in this class may result in a student being given a score of zero on the assignment in question, may be required to rewrite the assignment, and/or may be given a grade of F in the course.
