A Prayer for Year 12 Students
At the end of this school term we give thanks to God:
For all the teaching and learning that have taken place in our school, both in and out of the classroom,
For the talents and gifts that have been shared and the challenges that have been faced
For the burdens that have been lifted and the hurts that have been healed
For the respect and care that have been given.
We give thanks for the friendships that have just begun and for those that have grown.
For the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles,
For the hope that has lifted our hearts on the dark days
And for the love that has kept us going.
We give thanks for the community that we are and we ask you Lord Bless our Year 12 students as they prepare to sit for their exams: may your Spirit inspire them with
confidence and calmness
Bless our families as we take our holidays, may our time together leave us with memories to cherish.
Pour out your love on us that we may return renewed and refreshed to continue our journey together.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of the College,
Farewell Year 12
This week our thoughts are very much with our Year 12 students as they finish the last week of their formal schooling.
The College celebrates this important stage with a series of events beginning with the Year 12 BBQ lunch, the College
Student Leader and Parent Gathering, the Year 12 Presentation Night, the Year 12 Breakfast and whole school assembly
and finally the Graduation Mass at The Entrance Catholic Church. Our College focus is very much on a positive ending to
formal lessons that involves the school community, staff and parents and carers. Our students have been encouraged to
finish well.
I acknowledge the journey that parents and carers travel in supporting our young adults throughout Year 12. It can be a
very challenging time, often tinged with sadness with the realisation that a significant time in your young person’s life is
coming to an end. I invite all parents and carers of our Year 12 students to join us in this week’s celebrations.
Our Avenue to Learning – Term 3 Writing Competition
As part of our commitment to writing improvement, our Term 3 Writing Competition invited students to write a
complete story, with the central theme of light, in exactly 50 words. This task directed students to the importance of
creating a tightly formed narrative with a focus on every word counting!
The winners were announced at Year Assemblies this week and I thank our College Librarian for organising and
administering the competition for and assisting in marking the entries. Some of the winners’ work is included below.
The other winning entries will be published in future newsletters.
Screaming, crying, and dying, all that happens here. Sweat, pain and evil, all that we see here. We hide in the trenches
clawing at the end, this hell, this death, this disgrace. The light from the gun shots break the stillness as we sleep in
darkness.

The dark, mysterious forest is a magical place. I journey through the overgrown plantation and I sense danger lingering.
As I tremble with fear, a bright torchlight grasps my panic-stricken body. "Do not play in my succulent garden!" my
mother shouts as she drags me inside by my left ear.
Paris Dwyer, Year 7: Imagination
There’s always a time and a place for things to happen. No one thought that this would happen, not for a billion years
but one day it did. The light that keeps us warm, the light that makes the world bright has finally burnt out.
Montana Collins-Brown, Year 8: The End of the Sun
A candle is dimly lighting the room of an old pub. An old man is sitting alone in the darkest corner of the room, pipe in
mouth and glass of whisky in hand. He’s gazing towards the ceiling, thinking of his past, the good and the bad. His final
moments.

R.U.O.K. Day
As part of our commitment to the MindMatters Mental Health and
Wellbeing framework the College observed R.U.O.K. Day last Thursday for
the second time. Each student received a wallet size card at a Year
Assembly that draws attention to the importance of inquiry about the
wellbeing of those close to us and starting conversations. I encourage all
parents and carers to talk to their sons and daughters about the concept
of R.U.O.K. A parent forum which focussed on the main ideas of R.U.O.K.
was also held on the day facilitated by our Counsellor Caroline Zavolokin.
I take this opportunity to wish all of our families a safe and happy holiday break. Due to the Labour Day holiday on
Monday October 5 and the Staff Professional Learning Day on Tuesday October 6, the first day of Term 4 is
Wednesday October 7 2015. Term 4 also signals the change to our College Summer Uniform.
Best Wishes,
Mrs Michelle Peters – Principal
Uniform Shop
Please note that the College Uniform Shop will not be open during the school holidays.
However it will be open on Tuesday 6th October from 8:30am to 2:30pm and will be closed for
lunch between 12n and 12:30pm.
Students in Stage 5 have enjoyed a busy, but successful term. They have completed many assessment tasks and
participated in a wide range of activities.
A reminder to Year 10 students that the permission slip and $60 for the end of year Celebration is to be handed in to
the Finance Office by this Friday. Alternatively, the money can be transferred electronically after contacting Mrs Dwyer
in the Finance Office.
Another reminder to all students – please be aware that all students should be in attendance at school every day
possible – statistics tell us that the most successful students are those who attend school as much as possible.
Finally, I wish all the students in Stage 5 a restful and safe holiday!

WHOLE BRAIN TRAINING
You can improve both your memory and understanding by using your whole brain
·
both left and right sides
·
your brain relies on seeing relationships and patterns to what it already knows
Each side looks at things differently
·
the left side tunes into logical step-by-step learning and teaching and controls the right side of the body
·
the right side is looking for patterns, connections and meaning in your world and controls the left side of the
body
You can use your whole brain:
·
on the right hand page of your notebook – write down your teachers notes (left brain learning)
·
on the left hand page record what this new learning means in your world using idea maps, colours, flowcharts,
poems, songs and thinking tools (right brain learning)
By using your notebook pages in this fashion, you are encouraging both sides of your brain to work together.
Too often you only use the left side in your learning and your brain dumps it because it doesn’t relate it to what you
already know.
On the left hand side of the page – ANYTHING GOES. It is your individual feelings and connections to what you are
learning. To help you use your whole brain, a great approach is to use a variety of THINKING TOOLS.
Next term I will post a variety of thinking tools – different tools focus on thinking in varying ways. These tools will
extend how you think and use your brain.

The Great Year 8 Spelling Bee
In our Wellbeing for Learning lesson in Week 8, we held the finals of The Great Year 8 Spelling Bee. It had been a tense
battle as the students in each homeroom, over three weeks, had competed to find two representatives for the finals.
The homeroom teachers had tested them with words of varying difficulty in preparation for the “final countdown”.
Our finalists were Harry Bell and Teagan Ayre from 8-1, Laura Cooper and Isabella Byrne from 8-2, Adrian Fernandes and
Madison Eslick from 8-3, Olivia Hodges and Kyle Gordon from 8-4, Cooper Hetherington and Alex Leishman from 8-5,
Olivia McGill and Sophie Mackillop from 8-6, Tristen Parsons and Eliza O’Donnell from 8-7, Riley Sewell and Ella Smyth
from 8-8 and Sophie Wallace and Kyra Todd from 8-9.
The Grand Final began with each representative eagerly waiting to prove his or her spelling prowess. The scoring
process was entrusted to Mrs McLean. After several rounds, the 18 originals were reduced to 11, and then to 5, for the
last and more difficult words. Along the way, audience members of Year 8 were given the opportunity to win prizes by
spelling words that had been incorrectly spelt by the contestants. Of course there had to be a winner, so, after much
fun and cleverness from all, Sophie Mackillop of 8-6 reigned supreme as the 2015 Year 8 spelling champion.
I would like to thank all students of Year 8 for their involvement in this project and the homeroom teachers who
prepared the students with spelling lists and conducted the elimination rounds in homeroom.

Bishop David Walker Art Prize 2015
St Peter’s Catholic College has a proud tradition of artistic talent and our current Year 7 cohort is no exception. Earlier
this year students submitted an original artwork relating to a covenant person and what they produced was
exceptional. Fynlay Turnbull, Piper Huxtable and Nathan Meehan’s works have been sent to CSO as finalists and we wish
them the best of luck in what is sure to be a competitive arena. Of notable excellence were the works of Jordyn
Drysdale, Maddison Chalker-Holz, Jade McHugh and Mariagrazia Mua who narrowly missed out on being finalists.
Religious Education is an academic subject that utilises the many skills that students learn in other areas as well as
maintaining a focus on faith formation and the study of world religions. The artworks entered into the competition are a
great example of this.

Year 11 Studies of Religion
On Tuesday the 1st of September, Miss Brown’s Year 11 Studies of Religion class finished off our Buddhism topic
learning how “puja” is celebrated in the home. Puja is an expression of honour and devotional concentration. As a class
we had the experience of setting up our own model of a shrine in the classroom with Mrs Martin.
It was an enjoyable way to spend one of our last lessons with our prac teacher, Mrs Martin and to learn about Puja.

Year 12 Major Works:
Creative Arts students and staff have been busy finalising performance and major work components of the various
H.S.C. courses on offer. Drama and Dance students completed their performances several weeks ago and Visual Arts
students have handed up their finished bodies of Work. Last Thursday, our Music 1 students were the last group to
complete their external practical assessments.
My congratulations to all of these students for the high standard of work presented and to the staff (Mrs Tome, Mr
Tome, Mrs Haines, Mrs Crawley and Miss Heywood) who have offered so many hours of support, both inside the
classroom and after hours. The process is a long and often arduous one for students. However, we can be very pleased
with the standards achieved by these students under the guidance of their teachers.
Drama Students nominated for OnStage:
As a result of their work in the Drama Practical Examinations, we received news last week from the BOSTES that both
Elena Atayde and Molly Clancy have been nominated for inclusion in next year's 'OnStage'; a showcase of the very best
material presented for assessment by NSW Drama students. We wish both girls the best of luck in the final selection
process and acknowledge the excellence which both have achieved through this nomination.
Year 12 Recital Night:
The recent Year 12 Music Recital was a huge success and highlighted the talent of this group of creative students. The
night was held in the hall before an appreciative crowd. Congratulations to the Music 1 group on their efforts and a vote
of thanks to Mrs Haines, Mr Jarvis and Mr Judge for their support and efforts on the night.

Wednesday September 2nd signified the official handover of leadership portfolios from our outgoing Year 12 group to
their incumbent Year 11s. Many proud parents were in attendance to witness their mature, young adults receive the
role and badge that will form a large part of their identity for the next 12 months and beyond. Leadership is a very
powerful tool and just as their predecessors have done, our newly elected group will inspire their peers by embodying
the courage, compassion and commitment that make St. Peter’s Catholic College a wonderful learning environment.
As a staff we couldn’t be more proud of the amazing and talented young adults who are preparing to depart and wish
our new team all the best for the year ahead.
