Our boys’ basketball team has a new coach and the rest of the state has taken notice. K.C.
Goodin has already made a name for himself around the state and Butler is lucky to have him
at the helm.
K. C grew up in Hodgenville, KY and attended Larue County High School, where he was a four
-sport athlete. Goodin made the All-State team in both basketball and football, but that’s not
all. “I played basketball and football all four years but I also played
baseball and ran track,” said Goodin in a recent interview.
After high school, Goodin attended Carson Newman and played
basketball. After two years he transferred to Georgetown College.
After graduation from college, Goodin began a coaching career that
included successful teams at Western and Doss. He left high school
coaching to become an assistant coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, but when he was approached about the Butler job he jumped
at the chance.
Coach K.C. Goodin
Goodin got his first head-coaching job at Western High School in
2005-06 after serving as an assistant for five seasons. At Kentucky
Wesleyan, Goodin was an assistant under Happy Osborne. Goodin
was a player on Osborne’s Georgetown College team that won the
1998 NAIA title and was his assistant there for four years.
“Butler is where I want to be. I have six years of experience as a college assistant but I’m a
high school basketball coach.” Goodin emphasized, “I want to be a role model for these kids”.
Goodin, 38, took over a Doss program in 2010 that had won only 21 games in the previous
three seasons. His Dragons compiled a 67-49 record in four winning seasons. His final team in
2013-14 went 22-8, won the 22nd District title, and reached the semifinals of the Sixth Region
Tournament.
When Goodin decided to leave college coaching, he was a much sought-after coach. We asked
him, Why Louisville and why Butler? “My wife Annie is from Louisville so it’s good to get back
to the area with our three sons.”
“I chose Butler because of the school culture and supportive administration. Butler has a lot of
support and the students are proud to be Butler Bears.”
...the history of Butler Basketball
Goodin continued, “The history of Butler basketball
takes a back seat to no one.
doesn’t take a back seat to anyone. District Championships, Regional Championships, and several All-State players. I played with two former players, Anthony Holt and Richard Ward, during the championship season at Georgetown so I knew about Butler basketball.”

Goodin inherits a Butler program that went 6-19 last season. “We have potential,” Goodin said. “We have the
opportunity and the resources to be a program that can make noise year in and year out.” We asked what he
expected from his players. He quickly responded, “They understand that they will be held to a higher standard
because they are representing their family and OUR school. They will be held accountable for their actions on
or off the court. They will conduct themselves with class at all times. It’s really nothing special, it’s just the way
I was taught. You (the Alumni) will be proud of us.”
Editor’s Note – The basketball team has pulled off early season upsets by beating rivals PRP and Doss.
Is This The Real Butler Alumni Association?
For-Profit Groups Compete With School Associations
We are seeing an increasing volume of solicitations for class-reunion sites. A new one seems to surface every
month. Most of these are commercial at some level and either solicit your personal information for marketing
purposes or ask for a membership fee before permitting access to any significant amount of content from other
users. They consist solely of the content that you provide. The Suda E. Butler Alumni Association (SEBAA)
does not endorse any of these enterprises.
...If you attended our school you
“When we started out we wanted to distinguish ourselves from the other

Butler High Schools in the U.S. so we included Suda E. in our name. If you
attended our school you know we are Suda E. Butler. As it turns out it’s a
good way to identify us from the for-profit reunion sites,” said Larry Birkenfeld ’67. He continues, “Some of
these websites sell Butler themed shirts, caps etc. These purchases do not profit Suda E. Butler High School.
These items should be purchased directly from the school.”

SEBAA Makes $10,000 Contribution to Butler
Contribution total for 2015 exceeds $17,000
The vision of SEBAA has been to reconnect our nearly 24,000 Bear graduates to Butler and to one another, as
well as provide support for Butler High School. With over 1,300 members, we are building an organization that is
moving steadily toward making that vision a reality. In our four years of existence, we have published newsletters,
organized numerous social gatherings, archived rare historical memorabilia and donated nearly $40,000 to Butler
to help it maintain the high standard of excellence that has characterized this great school for over 61 years.
The total donation includes $10,000 in escrow that is designated for a future major project that has yet to be determined. Whatever it turns out to be, it will be coordinated with a recently announced major renovation of Butler's building that will be funded by JCPS and estimated

2015 Tax Preparation
In our last edition we asked for help in identifying a firm or someone to prepare our 2015 taxes. This is no easy task. We’ve identified the
accounting firm of Blue and Company to complete this work for us as well as advise us on
other finance issues and tasks.

Bylaw Changes
Looking Ahead to 2016
Recently the board of directors amended SEBAA’s bylaws. “Our research showed that it’s not unusual for a
startup organization to amend their bylaws,” said Eddie
Cannon ’72. “But it usually happens before the organization is nearly four years old.” He continued, “In most
cases we changed the language to accurately describe
what we’ve been doing all along. We also want to make
sure that this and future boards of directors have the
flexibility to change processes without having to change
the bylaws.”
Here is a summary of the changes:




Page 4
The annual meeting will be held in the fourth quarter
of each year. Original bylaws stated the annual meeting would be in October.
Removed the maximum number of directors allowed. Original bylaws stated we could have a maximum of 12 directors.
Directors will serve one-year terms. Original bylaws
stated that directors served three-year (staggered)
terms.
Created a position of executive director to be filled
if the board chooses. The executive director reports
to the board of directors.
Added an approval process for checks to include a
check request approved by an officer other than the
officer writing the check.
Jabir Walker Working

Former Bear in the NFL
1995 alumnus Jabir Walker is a
first year referee in the National
Football League (NFL). Jabir, a
math teacher at Collegiate High
Jabir Walker ‘95
School in Louisville, is a former
Canadian Football League and Arena Football
League player.
Before getting the NFL call he officiated college
football in Conference USA and the Southeastern
Conference. He has worked several bowl games
and the 2014 SEC championship game.
After graduating from Butler in 1995, Jabir attended
Murray State University where he played football. In
the off season, Jabir referees college basketball.
At the annual meeting we celebrated our best year yet
and we set priorities for 2016. Here is a look at our
top priorities for 2016.
Fred Wright: We’ve met or exceeded the expectations I had
when we were getting organized. Now we need to work on the
organization’s infrastructure. We need to make sure we have all
the pieces in place to make the organization sustainable. Appointing an Executive Director will be a big step to insure sustainability.
Eventually this will be a paid position but we have to find the person with the right skill set and a passion for Suda E. Butler.
Brenda Darnell Cease ’67: 2015 was a great year for memberships but we expect 2016 to be better. We are going to focus on
the class of 2016. We want them to join before they leave Butler.
We will start this project right after the first of the year. We also
want to grow the memorial memberships. This is very popular and
we want people to consider this option in the future.
David Moody ’75: The Golden Bear Induction Dinner is our signature event and we want to make it better each year. The Class
of ’66 is already making plans for their reunion weekend and,
believe it or not, the Class of ’67 has begun discussing their event
in 2017. This event takes a lot of effort but it is worth it. If you
want to get involved with one event, this is the one. You will have a
blast.
We will have other events too but we want to have an event for
younger alumni, those that have graduated in the past fifteen
years. There has been a lot of interest in this and I hope we can
deliver in 2016.
Eddie Cannon: Charitable gaming can provide a good stream of
income to an organization like ours but it is a lot of hard work and
it poses challenges. We are asking a lot of people to take on a lot
of responsibility. It is more work than we imagined but we hope to
keep learning and putting processes in place to reduce the work
load. Even with a reduced workload there is no way to reduce the
responsibility and we take the responsibility piece seriously.
We have more planned for 2016 but these four areas
will receive a lot of our attention.
