Lesson Plan: Currency of Canada
Submitted by: John Baldridge (Oklahoma City, OK)
Date: August 1, 2012
Description:
This lesson will focus on Canadian currency, both bank notes and coins, and how the nation celebrates its history,
culture, and achievements in its money. This will serve as the introductory lesson in a series on Canada, to initiate
interest and give students a basic understanding of Canadian identity which will serve as a foundation for the remainder
of the unit.
Grade Level: 9th Grade
Subject: World Geography
Duration: 70 minutes
Goal:
The goal is to have students learn Canada’s national symbols and how the nation celebrates its cultural values. An
excellent way to determine how a nation views itself is to examine its currency. Students will appreciate the
characteristics of Canadian identity that make it unique in the world.
Objectives:
Students will:
• Interpret the symbolism of features on Canadian bank notes.
• Assess the importance of symbols on Canadian coins.
• Complete a worksheet containing questions corresponding to the symbols on each bank note and coin.
• Participate in a discussion relating to Canadian identity and its place in the world.
Standards:
Archdiocese of Oklahoma City High School World Geography Standard 2: “The Americas: United States, Canada, and
Latin America”
Background Information:
The Canadian Journey series of bank notes was introduced in the 2000s and serves a dual purpose: first, to provide

5. Pass out student worksheet (see pages 3-4).
6. Give directions, including asking students to write their paragraph response on a separate piece of paper.

8. Hold class discussion while reviewing answers to the worksheet to share learning and appreciate issues relating to
Canadian identity.
Evaluation/Assessment:
Students will be assessed through 1) the worksheet; 2) the paragraph-writing assignment which asks students to
