Objectives of the Course:
To introduce the student to poetry in English. We will study major types of poetry
such as the lyric, narrative poetry and dramatic poetry. Great emphasis will be placed
on formal poetic characteristics and on the historical and cultural contexts that inform
the poems under study.
Learning Outcomes:
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
1. recognize the main themes and stylistic concerns of English Poetry,
2. demonstrate an understanding of poetic terms and illustrate these in examples,
3. situate English Poetry within a literary context,
4. formulate interpretations of poems in coherent essays and assignments,
5. assess the contribution of poetry to English Literature.

Listening to a Voice (tone, the person in the poem, irony)
Figures of Speech (simile, metaphor, personification, imagery)
Sound (alliteration, assonance, rhyme, rhythm, metre)
Closed Form (the Sonnet)
Open Form (prose poetry, visual poetry, found poetry)
Symbolism (symbol, myth, narrative)
Critical Case Book (T.S. Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”)
