The NAACP still relevant
Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary
2 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, February 21, 2014
yourself, I think all dues paying members of the NAACP,
(and I am proud to say my dues are current with the
NAACP), everybody slow your roll and carefully and
strategically evaluate all concerns and questions and let’s
sit in our private membership only meetings and hash
things out. I don’t recall ever reading an article in the
newspaper or hearing a story on the news about (for example), an Asian American organization having a big
fall-out amongst its leadership and then all their alleged
business hitting the fan. I don’t recall the Dominican organizations of this town, allowing their in-house concerns to go public on full blast.
The NAACP nationally and locally is the oldest,
longest surviving Civil Rights and Human Rights organizations in our nation. Let us not try to tear it down and by
doing such -- tear ourselves down.
Enough said on that part of the current state of affairs
with our local NAACP Chapter.
Despite the swirl of stories on the local chapter right
now, here’s some very good news about what the
Philadelphia NAACP is doing right now:
This Saturday, February 22, 2014, the Philadelphia
NAACP will host an Affordable Health Care Education
Session at Bright Hope Baptist Church at 12th and Cecil
B. Moore Avenue from 10am to 2pm. This event is free
and open to the public and will assist participants in navigating through signing up for health insurance for those

As long as I have breath in my body I will believe that
the NAACP is still very relevant and much needed in
America. So as we observe Black History Month, let me
take a few minutes to explain why I think the NAACP is
still very relevant in America. The NAACP is still relevant because as long as racism lives, we need people who
are smart enough and savvy enough to speak up for those
who don’t know how to speak up for themselves. When
we are still having black men beaten unconscious and in
some cases mysteriously
hung, (in certain Southern
states), and certain country
clubs that still don’t want to
admit Blacks for memberships, and certain swimming
pools that won’t allow our
children to swim there, we
need the NAACP. When we
have an African American
President of these United
States, who has received
more death threats than any other white president
before him, spewed with such hatred and viciousness, that tells me we still need the NAACP.
When I read about or see on the TV news stories
about black couples trying to move into white
neighborhoods, sometimes right here in good old
Pennsylvania, and when that couple wakes up in
the middle of the night they find a cross burning
on their lawn or racial slurs spray painted on the
walls of their home, I recognize that we still need the
NAACP. When we see young black boys being shot
down in the street by those who do not look like them,
and the shooter alleges the black boys had a gun, only to
later find no gun, and in some cases, the shooter gets a
light tap on the hand by a judge and doesn’t have to do
time -- I know we still need the NAACP.
The NAACP nationally and locally in my mind is still
very important.
In recent weeks some information about the local
NAACP is been spread around town and of course, the
news media took the ball and ran with it. For me, as a
journalist and columnist and cable TV talk show host, I
dare to say let us not rush to judgment. On the current
leadership of the NAACP, J. Wyatt Mondesire, to the
best of my knowledge and his leadership team of the
NAACP here in Philadelphia, has taken our organization
to the next level, far from where it was prior to the leadership of Mondesire. That local leadership, however, in
my mind, does not just rest on the shoulders of one person. So if there are some questions about reports on finances, etc. would not the onus be on the shoulders of the
entire Executive Board?
Rather than make accusatory statements and do a lot of
finger pointing, which often has fingers pointing back at

“Sadly, gun violence affects our communities
each and every day,”
Washington said. “While
I’m working hard to keep
the pressure on my colleagues in Harrisburg to
take action, there are
things that we can do in
our own communities to
help keep our kids safe

stay informed during an
emergency? In addition to
winter weather, learn how
to prepare for hurricanes,
hazardous material spills,
and other types of emergencies by attending a Personal and Family
Preparedness Workshop.
“The recent winter storms
in Philadelphia have been
constant reminders that we
all need to develop a Family
Emergency Plan,” said
Deputy Director for External Affairs Joan Przybylowicz. “Residents should also
have an emergency supply
kit with essential items,
such as bottled water, a
portable radio, flashlights
and extra batteries on hand
as well.”
During the Personal and
Family Preparedness
Workshops, residents will
learn how to develop a
family emergency plan,
stay informed when an
emergency strikes, and

The hungry child
ChildWatch
Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary
marian wright edelman
Some children cheer when schools close for
winter storms, but there are hungry children in
America right now for whom another snow day
this week meant another day without access to
school breakfast or lunch. Despite criticism
some big city mayors have kept schools open on
snowy days this winter so their children would
not go without food. These same children suffer
over the weekends.
While some
schools have food
pantries and send
children home on
the weekends with
backpacks filled
with food, it is still
far, far from
enough and only a
drop in the bucket
of need. Schools report students who arrive hungry on Monday morning or cry when they miss the
bus or it’s late because that means they’ve
missed breakfast.
The record 16.1 million children living
in poverty, including over seven million living in extreme
poverty, leaves millions of children suffering from hunger
in our nation with the world’s largest GDP. In 2012 more
than one in nine children in the United States lived in
households where children were food insecure, meaning
they lacked consistent access to adequate food; more than
one in five children — 15.9 million — lived in households where either children or adults or both were food
insecure. In some families, like Jasmine’s, hunger compounds other crises like homelessness, making them even
worse. In many others hunger is almost hidden—a quiet
secret of parents struggling to recover from the recession
and no longer able to stay afloat. Food pantries have reported that some of the same community members who
were once regular donors helping to fill the shelves are
now regular visitors in need of help themselves.
Black and Hispanic households with children were
more than twice as likely as White households to have
food insecure children, but White households comprised
the largest group of households (43 percent) with food insecure children. In 2010 and 2011, three-quarters of
households with food insecure children had one or more
working adults, 80 percent of whom worked full-time.
Children’s physical health and brain development depend on access to nutritious food, especially in the earliest
years of life. Hunger and malnutrition have devastating
consequences for children. Federal nutrition programs
continue to be a critical support to ensure children’s daily
nutritional needs are met: they put food on children’s
plates, help build healthy minds and bodies, and help lift
families out of poverty. A recent study found that needy
children who received food assistance before age five
were in better health as adults. Food programs are particularly crucial for younger children, as they are more likely
to be in poor health, experience developmental delays,
and be food insecure when their families’ food benefits
are reduced or ended. These programs work. Yet they are
not reaching every child in need.

We were homeless.
My mom. My big sister and me.
We slept in the car. . .
We went to IHOP and we only got one pancake and we
shared it.
That was our breakfast...
When I was tired of sitting in the car, I would talk to
my mom.
She would always say a prayer so we could have a better life.
We should buy kids good food when they are homeless.
We should help them out.
-- Jasmine, age 7
There are six people in our family.
But only five sit down to dinner.
That’s because my mom doesn’t eat.
She wants to make sure we have enough food.
-- Vanessa, age 6
than one in four children in America — were cut in the recent farm bill by $8.6 billion over 10 years. An estimated
850,000 households, including 1.7 million people, will
see a reduction on average of $90 a month in their food
assistance. This cut comes on top of the substantial
across-the-board benefit reduction that took effect in November 2013 and affected all SNAP households. These
cuts are morally offensive and economically indefensible,
especially when so many non-needy farmers and others
will continue to get agricultural welfare subsidies. SNAP
is the only defense against the wolves of hunger for 1.2
million households with children who had no cash income
other than SNAP in an average month in FY 2011; FY
2012 is expected to show an increase. It is shameful that
Congress continues to treat poor Americans like second
class citizens by cutting supports they desperately need.
Like SNAP, the school lunch, breakfast, and summer
feeding programs, which provide meals to children in
school and during the long hot summer months, are crucial and effective anti-poverty investments that help combat child hunger. They also play a vital role in ensuring
children are fed and able to succeed in the classroom. In
one study, children who were food insecure in kindergarten saw a 13 percent drop in their reading and math
test scores by the third grade compared to their food-secure peers. In FY2012, more than 21 million children received free or reduced-price lunch through the National
School Lunch Program and nearly 11 million children received free and reduced price breakfast. When school is
out, though, it’s a different story.
The long summer break can be the worst time of all for
our young as hunger does not take a summer vacation.
The Children’s Defense Fund’s latest report shows only
10 percent of the number of children who relied on free or
reduced-price lunch during the school year received
meals through the Summer Food Service Program. Despite the fact that it is 100 percent federally-funded and
has the potential to create local jobs for cafeteria workers,
bus drivers, and others, too many states and communities
drag their feet, create mindless bureaucratic hurdles, and
make it as difficult as possible to get resources to serve
meals to hungry children during the summer. I have never
understood why and it should be stopped. Click here to
see the 10 best and 10 worst states for child enrollment in
Summer Food Service Programs.
It is crucial to start asking about and planning right now
for summer feeding programs in your community to make
sure there is no child hunger crisis in your area this summer. Encourage local congregations, organizations, community centers, parks and recreation departments, and
others to open their doors and feed hungry children this
summer. These entities are eligible to become summer
feeding sponsors and sites. If you have a connection to a
local service or civic program discuss this issue with them
and encourage them to take advantage of the opportunity
to help hungry children get food. Adults and older children can volunteer to help prepare or serve meals at local
sites and learn how to serve others and get to know who
their neighbors are. Visit the USDA’s website to learn
more.
There should be no hungry people—especially no hungry children—in any community in rich America. Jasmine, Vanessa, and millions of children like them deserve
better.-

The unconscious impact of history
junious r. stanton
“The personality is in part shaped in the womb itself,
shaped by the genes shaped in part by the birth process
itself, shaped in the very two years of life. Yet very few if
any of us, can remember in detail those first two years of
life. Yet it is those very first two years that determine our
behavior from “8 to 80”. And so the idea that we don’t
know, that we’re not aware of certain early experiences
doesn’t mean that we have escaped their effects. In fact
that puts us more profoundly under the influence of these
unknown forces.” The Falsification of Afrikan Consciousness Eurocentric
History, Psychiatry and the
Politics White Supremacy
page 34
We are the results of our
choices and our history. One
reason we have an obligation to study and learn
our history is so we can heal, revive and empower
ourselves. All of us grew up in a Eurocentric environment one diametrically opposed to our African
roots and culture. While all things have the DIVINE LIFE FORCE and CONSCIOUSNESS in
them, we do not all react to it the same way. Unfortunately, as kidnapped Africans, we’ve been
raised in a culture of violence and terror, one that
is attempting to kill us psychologically (menticide),
physically (genocide) and spiritually (it denies our divinity). The ruling class’s agenda is more subtle now, the
blatant terrorism, physical violence and hatred of the bygone era have been replaced with cunning, and subliminal subterfuge; nevertheless the intent of white
domination remains in full effect.
We need to know our history prior to the coming of the
Eurasian, Arab and European invaders so we have a
frame of reference for what it means to be fully actualized people. Fully actualized people created the Nile Valley, Sumer, Indus Valley and ancient Chinese
civilizations. We need to be fully cognizant of what we
accomplished throughout Africa and the world when the
only white people on the planet were albinos and lepers.
We need to know the true history of our oppressors
also, not just the lies we have been forced to internalize.
We need to juxtapose our extensive history with the recent history of our enemies to learn the lessons embedded in that history. We need to study and teach world
history not the Eurocentric mind pabulum they feed us in
schools and their media.
Once we realize Black History is world history, we
will see ourselves in a different light. Learning and teaching this history is our responsibility. We cannot expect
our adversaries to do this for us because they are not
going to alter their educational content to boost the esteem, learning capacities and potential of non-Westerners
unless it is on behalf of Western global domination. The
fact is, Western pedagogy and mass media are intentionally designed to reinforce notions of white superiority
and to legitimize their wanton imperialism.
Steven Biko once said, “The most potent weapon in
the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
European elites are psychopaths; hence they are masters
of manipulation. They know mind control is a powerful
weapon. This is why a small minority within the minority
of the world’s population are able to rule the masses.
(See http://www.wikihow.com/Identify-a-Psychopath to

know that for their okey-doke to work effectively, their
targets or victims must be unaware he or she is being manipulated and programmed. Unfortunately that is the
state most Africans are in today, we are totally unaware
of our mental colonization.
We must wake up to our condition and reality. Studying our history from a liberation perspective is a great
way to make us fully aware of our reality. This is why the
1% doesn’t want us to know our story! They do not want
us to know the truth about ourselves or them!
Self-determination demands we wake up. There is an
African proverb says, “not to know is bad not to want to
know is worse.” Once we refocus our mental resources,
reorient and reprogram ourselves to be critical thinkers
and serious students, we will see the direct connection
between European oppression and our damaged psyches
and esteem.
Willful amnesia, ignorance and identity ambiguity are
not the solution. W.E.B. DuBois called our identity ambiguity “double consciousness”. He said in Souls of Black
Folks, “It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through
the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of
a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One
ever feels his two-ness,—an American, a Negro; two
souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength
alone keeps it from being torn asunder.”
DuBois recognized and articulated this internal struggle because he himself was dealing with it. As a Black
man in America, DuBois too grappled with his own self
and group identity. He was forced to deal with the internal war within, often his emerging African consciousness
won out, and other times the Western consciousness won.
DuBois eventually moved to Africa to live out the rest of
his life.
DuBois concluded, “The history of the American
Negro is the history of this strife — this longing to attain
self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a
better and truer self. In this merging he wishes neither of
the older selves to be lost. He does not wish to Africanize
America, for America has too much to teach the world
and Africa. He wouldn't bleach his Negro blood in a
flood of white Americanism, for he knows that Negro
blood has a message for the world. He simply wishes to
make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an
American without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors of opportunity closed
roughly in his face.” W.E.B. DuBois, Souls of Black
Folks.
Not knowing one’s true history creates a void and disorientation in one’s psyche and inner core. This void in
turn prompts us to attempt to fill the emptiness and reorient ourselves; often in ways that are not beneficial to the
self. Many of us are out of balance and thrown off due to
our loss of historic and personal identity. This imbalance
manifests itself in many forms: self-hatred, self-medication, underachievement, depression, promiscuity and
other mental and emotional conditions. But the root
cause is our lack of self knowledge.
Last week we discussed the Akan term Sankofa (to go
back and fetch), meaning going back to integrate the best
of our past so we can move forward. The late African
centered scholar Asa Hilliard III said, “The concept of
Sankofa seems clear enough, but we cannot fully appre-

Aquarius – The Sweetheart
Optimistic and honest. Sweet personality.
Very independent. Inventive and intelligent. Friendly
and loyal. Can seem unemotional. Can be a bit rebellious. Very stubborn, but original and unique. Attractive on the inside and out. Eccentric personality.
Amethyst is the stone for the month of February
In the Middle Ages Amethyst was thought to encourage
celibacy, and as a result became important in the ornamentation of churches. Amethyst, according to Leonardo Da Vinci,
is able to increase intelligence and dissolve evil thoughts.
Catherine the great was very fond of amethysts. They adorn
the British Crown Jewels and were coveted by Egyptian royalty. Rosaries in Tibet are often made from amethyst, a gemstone considered to be sacred to Buddha. Ancient Greeks
believed amethyst would protect against drunkenness
(“amethystas” is a greek word meaning “not drunken”) and
therefore carved wine goblets from it. Amethyst is believed
to purify the mind, increase tranquility and alleviate anxiety.

Black History Month Special: Brother E.D. Nixon: Organizer and Chief Strategist of the
Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Movement for Rights of Black People in Alabama
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, February 21, 2014 -5

Dedicated to the leadership of Montgomery
Improvement Association:
Mrs. .Jo Ann Robinson, Mr. Rosa Parks, Martin
Luther King, Jr., Rev. L. Roy Bennett, Mr. E. D. Nixon,
Dr. Moses W. Jones, M.D., Mrs.Erna Dungee, Rev.
Uriah J. Fields, Rev. E. N. French, Mr. C.W. Lee,
Reverend A. W. Wilson,Ms. Claudette Colvin and Other
Black Women Who Refused to Comply
Dr. Martin Luther King Comments on Politics of Respectability and E. D. Nixon
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. provides the following insight as a participant and observer of The Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-56: " Fortunately, Mrs.
Parks was ideal for the role assigned to her by history.
She was a charming person with a radiant personality,
soft spoken and calm in all situations. Her character was
impeccable and her dedication deep-rooted. All of these
traits together made her one of the most respected people
in the Negro community. Only E. D. Nixon -- the signer
of Mrs. Parks bond -- and one or two other persons were
aware of the arrest. In the evening the word got around
to a few influential women of the community, mostly
members of the Women's Political Council. After a series of telephone calls back and forth they agreed that the
Negroes should boycott the buses. They immediately
suggested the idea to Nixon, and he readily concurred. In
his usual courageous manner he agreed to spearhead the
idea."
King Receives Call From Brother Nixon Conveys
Urgency of The Moment
As an important participant /observer and the best
known person in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, Dr.
King reflects on and historicizes this important moment
in history: "Early Friday morning, 2 December 1955,
Nixon called me . He was so caught up in what to say
that he forgot to greet me with the usual 'hello' but
plunged immediately into the story of what had happened to Mrs. Parks the night before. I listened, deeply
shocked, as he described the humiliating incident; 'We
have taken this type of thing too long already.' Nixon
concluded, his voice trembling, 'I feel that the time has
come to boycott the buses. Only through a boycott can
we make it clear to the white folks that we will not accept this type of treatment any longer.' I agreed at once
that some protest was necessary , and that the boycott
method would be an effective one."
What Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. makes clear is that
the long time trade union leader, NAACP President and
widely regarded Civil Rights leader in the State of Alabama, E. D. Nixon, was the man who played a key role
in unifying the black community of Montgomery towards mass movement and citizenship . Although the
Montgomery Bus Boycott is widely known as an essential development of Blacks in the American South and a
global influence for those colonized in Africa, Latin
America, Asia, Europe, Australia and the entire Bandung
World, far too few know of the role played by a man in
the deepest part of the American South -- Mr. E. D.
Nixon.
E.D. Nixon
(some thirty years before the birth of Martin Luther
King in Atlanta, Georgia), Edgar Daniel Nixon spent the
greater part of his life as a hard working man of color, a
union organizer in a state with a history of anti unionism,
Nixon captures it succinctly:
"I'm from Montgomery, Alabama, a city that's known
as the 'Cradle of the Confederacy' , that had stood still for
more than ninety three years until Rosa L. Parks was arrested and thrown in jail like a common criminal . Fifty
thousand people rose up and caught hold of the Cradle of
the Confederacy and began to rock it till the 'Jim Crow '
rockers began to reel and the segregated slats began to
fall out."
What is left from that summary is that Nixon played a
key role in rocking the cradle and knocking out the leading edged slats. And it began more than three decades before the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Mrs. Jo Ann
Robinson, an English Professor at Alabama State College
in Montgomery and organizer of Women's Political
Council that served as a worthy precursor to the Montgomery Improvement Association (owing much to the
earlier Universal Negro Improvement Association),
rightly observed: E. D.
Nixon was 'known for
years to fight discrimination.'

Philip Randolph wrote about when he retired. He wrote
in the Black Worker that no southern union president of
the Sleeping Car Brothers Union could say that he got a
superintendent fired.
Once I got him fired off of that job he got a job in a
furniture store. It was located right near the train station.
Most of our porters traded there. It was a department
store right downtown in Montgomery. When we discovered he was around there working we came together and
discussed this at a Brotherhood meeting. I asked, 'Well,
how many of y'all got accounts up there? Eighty five of
our porters in Montgomery at the time had accounts at
this department store. Thirty three of them came up with
their money and went up there and stuck a check in that
man's hand and told the proprietor that he could either
let him go or he would hear from all of us. They let him
go! Mass pressure is the only answer to these white
folks!"
The following account appears in Jack Santino's
book, Miles of Smiles: Years of Struggle, Stories of
Black Pullman Porters. E. D. Nixon speaks: "They arrested Mrs. Parks for refusing to obey the bus driver
who was driving the bus when he asked her to get up
and give her seat to a white man. She didn't get up and
they arrested her and throwed her in jail like a common
criminal. So I made bond for her and, I said to Mrs.
Parks, "You know what I'd like to use your case to
break down segregation on the buses.' And I recorded a
number of names on a tape recorder that night , and I
started calling them telling them about what happened. I
said, 'It's my decision that we organize a bus boycott and
fight discrimination on the buses. ' Ralph D. Abernathy ,
who most of you may have heard of was the first man I
called. He said,' Yeah, Brother Nixon , I'll go along with
you about it a while and call me back. ' And I called the
next man, Reverend H. H. Hubbard and I expected him
to go along because number one he was the President of
the Minister's Alliance and number two, he was my pastor at the time. So I didn't expect him to fight me. The
third person I called was Martin Luther King, and he
said, 'Brother Nixon, let me think about it a while and
call me back. ' So I went on and called eighteen other
people. I called him back and he said, 'Yeah, Brother
Nixon, I decided to go along with you.' I said, ' I'm glad

Supreme Gospel Entertainment enjoys getting empowered and inspired by
resident career coach
LeTonya Clark. Her advise
coupled with techniques to
improve one's business is
superb. Let us all learn
today what our motivating
reasons are for starting on
our respective journeys.
Has it ever been hard for you to finish something you started? Have you begun a project or
task with great enthusiasm and then found that as
time went on you were not as excited as you
were in the beginning?
If so, you are certainly not alone. It has happened to
me and it has happened to many other readers as well.
This is a very common occurrence and a key to staying
motivated is to remember your reason for starting in the
first place. Keeping yourself reminded of why you
started the project, or came up with the idea will help
you stay focused as time ticks on and you are still
building and working to make the vision a reality. So,
what is your reason for starting?
Leaving a legacy? I believe there is something in all
of us that wants to leave something positive behind. We
have a deep need to discover meaning in life and to
know that our individual sojourn on this planet has
been for a reason. We want to know that when we
come to the end of our rich lives, our voice will leave
an echo - a piece of us will remain from which others
can benefit. Your legacy - your echo - may be a book
that you want to write, an organization you want to initiate, a hobby you want to take up, a business or pro-

something you
started. Often, we leave a string of incomplete projects
in our wake. If the project was important enough to
start, it is important enough to finish. Continue to
imagine what it will feel like when you have completed
it. The satisfaction you will feel. Let this also keep
you focused on the end goal.
Many often give up before the work is done. Do not
let that be you. Whatever your reason for starting, keep
that in your mind and let that motivate you to continue
moving forward so you can finish your task, and reach
your goal. The glory is in seeing the end result that has
the potential to transform lives and leave a lasting mark
on the world.

You know they say “death” comes in threes. Well, I got
my share over the past three weeks. We said farewell to
one of Philly finest community leaders, businessman, educator and entrepreneur, my father-in-law, Frederick E.
Miller, Sr., who died of natural causes recently. He received a beautiful send off at, Zion Baptist Church, 3600
N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA. where Fred was a
Deacon and church Treasurer.
Fred’s educational career
included teaching elementary,
secondary and special education for the Philadelphia
School district. He was an instructor at Temple University
and a Supervisor of Teacher
Training
Reverend Leon Sullivan
chose Fred to become an integral part of the OIC movement in its infancy. Fred was
Entertainment Editor the first director of the
Philadelphia OIC Feeder Program and went on to become the CEO of OIC’s of America. After that Fred became President and CEO of
Progress Investment Associates Inc. and received National Recognition as one of America’s top 100 companies in the Black Enterprise 100 listing. Simultaneously,
throughout his career, he was an avid real estate investor
and began to embrace his entrepreneurial ambitions by
opening and operating his own car dealership, Fred
Miller Pontiac eventually becoming the Finance Director
of the Philadelphia Port Corporation where he retired.
He then continued his entrepreneurial endeavors by
opening and operating the following 3 retail establishments in Pennsylvania and NJ: West Stock Inc.,
Franklintown Beverage Dist. Inc. and One O Six Delsea
Inc. In addition, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors for Berean Federal Savings Bank, Chairman of the
Board of Greater Philadelphia Venture Capital Corporation, Chairman of the Board of Managers of the West
Philadelphia Branch of the YMCA, Board Member of the
Metropolitan YMCA of Philadelphia and vicinity, Board
Member of AAA Mid-Atlantic
We also lost one of Philadelphia’s local actors, Leroy
R. Tapper, Jr. who has appeared in over 100 movies made
right here in Philadelphia. From: “Shadowboxer,” “Invisible,” “The Happening,” “The Great Debater,” and
“Beloved” just to name a few. However, Leroy’s acting
went beyond movie, he also appeared in commercials
and advertisement. For nine months, his picture was
plastered on a huge billboard on 9th and Market streets,
downtown Philly, promoting one of the local hospitals.
Besides his acting ability, Leroy was a stupendous
chess playing skills. A winner of several championships,
Leroy used his skills to train the elderly and young tots
the craft of chess playing. A brilliant loving, giving person will be missed.
Lastly, Gladys Elizabeth Rainney, 86yrs old, closed her
eyes recently after living a full life, and losing her dear
husband and partner last year. Gladys was a breast cancer
survivor for over 50 years.
Gladys loved to be in the presence of her family and
friends and started a tradition of hosting “Open House”
every New Year’s day for 57 years. Memories that will
never be forgotten.

ciate its value to Africans until we confront a fundamental question; ‘Whether to be African or not to be.’ That is
the fundamental question. Everything else we do flows
from this basic point. We are either African or we are
nothing; whether we are on the continent or in the diaspora. We cannot claim our heritage when it is expedient
for us to ignore it when it is not. This only creates confusion.” SBA The Reawakening of the African Mind page
7.
Not knowing who we are, or willfully choosing to
negate who we are creates a loss of cultural or ethnic
mooring which in turn creates confusion, creates the double consciousness and exacerbates our disorientation.
The only way to effectively resolve our identity ambiguity and heal our double consciousness is to answer the
fundamental question by affirming our Africaness! Yes I
know you have Native American and European blood in
you (or so you say) but you are not on the bottom of the
American socio-economic ladder because you have European or some other non-African blood surging through
your veins! You are on the bottom precisely because you
have African blood in your veins.
Dr. Amos Wilson an Afrocentric psychologist said, “If
we look at the history of European imperialism we see
their psychology. As I have said on numerous occasions
the psychology of the rulers of this world, the psychology of Eurocentrically oriented people is not in the psychology books, but in the history book; and one merely
has to read their history to get at their psychology. And
that history of course is not written by me, not written by
Black scholars. It is not written by us ‘prejudiced nationalists’. It is written of course by the imperialists themselves and therefore is a form of self-indictment and it is
there for all to see.” The Falsification of Afrikan Consciousness Eurocentric History , Psychiatry and the Politics of White Supremacy page 72.
History plays an overwhelming role in our development whether we realize it or not, whether we are conscious of it or not. So it behooves us to familiarize
ourselves with world history from ancient times to the
present. We must apply Sankofa, go back and fetch it. We
must learn who we are and what we were about prior to
the coming of the enemies of this world. Our challenge is
to read their history in the light of their psychopathy and
recognize the toll their behavior has taken on humanity,
animals and the ecology. In this light, it would be suicidal
to continue to ignore history both theirs and ours.

Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
10 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, February 21, 2014
Toby Rich
This week’s rap from the
Mayor of Girard Ave. Toby
Rich gives us more information about Black History
Month. I would like to talk
about people that have
made a difference in the city
of Philadelphia. One person
that comes to my mind is
Mom Lillian Crippen.
Mr. Sonny Driver gave me the opportunity to
write for SCOOP USA because of Mom. This was a big
break for me because it gave me a chance to do something positive with my life. She would hear me talking to
people when I would come in her store and she said to
me that she thought that I had interesting things to say. I
didn’t believe her because of my own low self-esteem,
but I took a chance and wrote an article and I really enjoyed being able to try and find things that were interesting to write about.
At first I must say it was very hard. Then someone
suggested that I go to City Hall and listen to all and any
press conferences. Well, talk about being nervous. I was
a little intimidating, but I got over it and the rest is history. Black History. So I would like to thank Mom Crippen in my own caring and loving way. Thank You Mom.
Next on my list of famous people is Mr. Rufus
Harley. Now, Mr. Harley was a great musician and his
fame came from playing the bagpipes. Yes, he played
Jazz on the Bagpipes and he was great at it. Every New
Year’s eve, Mr. Harley would bring in the New Year at
12 midnight with a tune on his bagpipes. Just think. In
Germantown you would have regular folks shooting their
guns off but Rufus would bring in the New Year with
life. He would play a tune for us. His program was about
life.
I would also like to talk about some of the people in
music that have helped Philadelphia, especially at the
Clef Club like my brother Mr. Steven Baylock, Carol
Riddick and Bootsey Barnes among others. These people
come from the jazz side of things. I also have to include
Mr. Sun Ra. Many musicians would live with Sun Ra
and study with him. Among them were folks like John
Gilmore, Marvin Reed and many more.
I can remember times when Marvin would take me

with him over Mr. Sun Ra’s house to listen to them practice and that was an honor. Unfortunately I was not writing for Scoop USA at that time. How I wish I was
because there was a lot of history in that house. I spent a
lot of time with Mr. Rufus Harley and his son Messiah
Harley, who gave me the idea to write about his Pop. I
have to say that that I did not take full advantage of the
opportunities at that time, so now when ever I get the
chance to spend time with Steven Baylock and Bootsey
Barnes I will be a pain until I get all the info that I can so
I can pass it on.
We have great music here in Philly and we have a great
we have great music history. We have Boyz to Men;
Bunny Sigler; Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes; Patty
LaBelle; Gamble and Huff; and too many others to name.
We there is also have a legend that we have working
right at Scoop USA, Mr. Bruce Webb of Webb’s Record
Store and there’s also one of the biggest promoters in
Philly History, Mr. Sonny Driver. It seems we always
look past the history that stares you right in your face and
I am glad to be in a position that I can remember what I
can about the history that we have right here amongst us.
With love honor and respect from your Mayor of Girard
Avenue, Toby Rich. Peace.

6.2 million African American adults in the United

Health Care law is ‘An Answer to a prayer’
for Some Older Americans
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
claudelle evans
This is an article that I read and wanted to share with
you.
CHICAGO (AP) — For many older Americans who
lost jobs during the recession, the quest for health care
has been one obstacle after another. They're unwanted by
employers, rejected by insurers, struggling to cover rising
medical costs and praying to
reach Medicare age before a
health crisis.
These luckless people, most
in their 50s and 60s, have
emerged this month as early
winners under the nation's new
health insurance system. Along
with their peers who are selfemployed or whose jobs do not
offer insurance, they have been
signing up for coverage in large numbers, submitting new-patient forms at doctor's offices and filling prescriptions at pharmacies.
"I just cried I was so relieved," said Maureen Grey, a
58-year-old Chicagoan who finally saw a doctor this
month after a fall in September left her in constant pain.
Laid off twice from full-time jobs in the past five years,
she saw her income drop from $60,000 to $17,800 a year.
Now doing temp work, she was uninsured for 18 months
before she chose a marketplace plan for $68 a month.
Americans ages 55 to 64 make up 31 percent of new
enrollees in the new health insurance marketplaces, the
largest segment by age group, according to the federal
government's latest figures. They represent a glimmer of
success for President Barack Obama's beleaguered law.
The Great Recession hit them hard and for some its
impact has lingered.
Aging boomers are more likely to be in debt as they
enter retirement than were previous generations, with
many having purchased more expensive homes with
smaller down payments, said economist Olivia Mitchell
of University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. One in
five has unpaid medical bills and 17 percent are underwater with their home values. Fourteen percent are unin-

As of December, 46 percent of older jobseekers were
among the long-term unemployed compared with less
than 25 percent before the recession.
And those financial setbacks happened just as their
health care needs became more acute. Americans in their
mid-50s to mid-60s are more likely to be diagnosed with
diabetes than other age groups, younger or older, accounting for 3 in 10 of the adult diabetes diagnoses in the
United States each year. And every year after age 50, the
rate of cancer diagnosis climbs.

The affordable coverage is "an answer to a prayer really," said Laura Ingle, a 57-year-old Houston attorney
who had been denied coverage repeatedly because she
has sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease She recently had
back surgery for a painful condition that's been bothering
her for months.
One night in September, 64-year-old Glenn Nishimura
woke up with wrenching pain that sent him to the emergency room. It was his gallbladder. A doctor recommended surgery.
Instead, Nishimura went home. A consultant to nonprofit groups, he was self-employed and uninsured.
"I checked myself out because I had no idea what this
was going to cost," the Little Rock, Ark., man said.
"They didn't want me to go, but they didn't stop me."
Nishimura lost his coverage after leaving a full-time
position with benefits in 2007, thinking he could land another good job. The recession ruined that plan. After

Unfinished Business
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
12 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, February 21, 2014
rev. dr. wm. rocky brown, 3rd
Last week I attended a service at Mother
Bethel AME Church in Philly and the pastor,
Rev Dr Mark Kelly Tyler, preached a dynamic sermon coming from the 2nd Chapter
of Judges entitled "Unfinished Business".
So here is my version of that word.
There was a generation of the children of
Israel who didn't know GOD and the
covenant that HE made
with their ancestors. Now
because they didn’t know
GOD or their history
they became a generation
who created unfinished
business for generations
to come. You know as
human beings we all
have some unfinished
business in our lives.
There are some relationships we need to
mend. There are some projects we haven't

COBRA coverage expired, he was denied coverage because of high blood pressure and other conditions.
He made it until September without a major illness. A
second night of gallbladder pain and a chat with a doctor
persuaded him to have the surgery. After getting the bills,
he negotiated the fees down to $12,000, which he considered "a big hit, but it could have been worse." The average cost of a gallbladder removal in Arkansas was listed
at three times that. Nishimura dipped into his savings to
cover the bill.
In December, he chose a bronze plan on the new insurance marketplace that costs him $285 a month after a tax
credit. The deductible is $6,300, so he hopes he doesn't
have to use his coverage. He can get on Medicare in
April, just in time for his annual checkup.
"Now there's the peace of mind of knowing the limits
of my obligation if I have catastrophic health needs," he
said.
Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger said he's noticed a recent increase in patients in this age group at his family practice
in Miami. Lots of them have untreated chronic conditions
that have progressed to an advanced stage.
"Many have delayed necessary treatments due to costs
and expect a total and quick workup on their first visit,"
he said, adding they want referrals to specialists and tests
including colonoscopies and mammograms.
The abundance of older patients signing up is no surprise to the Obama administration, which conducted internal research last year that showed the "sick, active and
worried" would be the most responsive to messages urging them to seek coverage.
Signing up younger, healthier enrollees is seen as more
difficult, but crucial to keeping future insurance rates
from increasing. The administration said those age
groups may put off enrolling until closer to the March 31
deadline.
"We have always anticipated that those with more
health needs would sign up early on, and that young and

started or completed. There are some goals we haven't
reached. Well, in some cases it’s because we got side
tracked and in other cases it's because we've lost our
motivation and zeal. We have some unfinished business. When it comes to civil rights and freedom in this
country we have so unfinished business. We have a
black man in the White House yet he is more disrespected than any other president that ever served. Unfinished business. There is an atmosphere in our
society where young black males can be shot down in
cold blood by other ethnic groups and the shooter is
found not guilty. Unfinished business. Even worst
young black males are shooting one another and we
just shake our heads and say very little about it and in
most cases nobody even gets locked up because we
don't want to be a snitch. Unfinished business. The
government can find money to build prisons but doesn't have money to keep schools open and hire the
proper staff. Unfinished business. Our children are
still being miseducated, called uncontrollable by the
system and put on medication. Unfinished business.
healthy people would wait until the end," administration
spokeswoman Joanne Peters said.
Some of the aging boomers were determined to get
coverage in the marketplace, despite repeated problems
and frustration with the federal website.
The hours spent online and over the phone paid off for
real estate agent Greg Burke and his beautician wife, Pat.
The empty-nesters qualified for a tax credit that will
lower their monthly health insurance premiums by nearly
half.
The Burkes, from Akron, Ohio, are among the 38 percent of marketplace enrollees in the state between 55 and
64 years old. He's 61 and had a knee replaced six years
ago.
They will now spend $250 a month for health insurance, "a huge savings," Greg Burke said. Their deductibles also dropped from $2,500 each to $750 each,
meaning they will pay less out of pocket.
In Miami, licensed practical nurse Marie Cadet, who is
54, often works double shifts to make ends meet for herself and her 12-year-old daughter. She had been paying
more than $150 a month for health insurance, with a
$3,000 deductible. In effect, she paid most medical costs
out of her own pocket, including about $80 a month for
blood pressure medicine.
After choosing a plan from the marketplace, Cadet's
monthly payment dropped to $86 a month, with the government kicking in $300. Her deductible fell to a more
affordable $900.
"Now," Cadet said, "I'm not scared anymore."
Associated Press writers Ramit Plushnick-Masti in
Houston, Ann Sanner in Columbus, Ohio, and Kelli
Kennedy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., contributed to this report.

church is the only church right down town and I told
eighteen other people to meet at your church this evening
at three o'clock. It would look kind of bad to have that
many people at your church for a meeting of this kind
and you weren't there. ' He said, 'I'm going to be there.'
I said, ' Alright' so I set up the meeting. And that was
Friday, December 2, and Sunday Morning, December
4th, headlines were ,'Negroes Boycott the Montgomery

morning, and it was a very good story I called every

morning?' When you go to church this morning tell the
people we want to have 2,000 people there on tomorrow

Your spouse may be covered by Social Security
Social security
patrick l. robinson, sr.
If you have a spouse who does not earn an income or who earns less than you do, your
spouse (including a same-sex spouse) may be
entitled to Social Security spouses’ benefits
based on your record. Social Security can be an
important financial
asset for married
couples when the
time comes to apply
for retirement benefits. In many cases,
one spouse may have
earned significantly
more than the other,
or may have worked
longer. Or it could be that one spouse
stayed home to do the work of raising
the children, caring for elderly family
members, or managing the household
while the other focused on a career.
Whatever your situation, Social Security will look at all
possibilities to make sure both spouses receive the maximum Social Security benefits possible, whether based on
each spouse’s earnings record or the higher wageearner’s record. Your spouse can apply for benefits the
same way that you apply for benefits on your own
record. He or she can apply for reduced benefits as early
as age 62, or for 100 percent of the full retirement benefits at “full retirement age.” Not sure what the full retirement ages are? To learn your and your spouse’s full
retirement ages, based on birth year, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/ageincrease.htm. The benefit amount
your spouse can receive at full retirement age can be as
much as one half of your full benefit. If your spouse opts
for early retirement, the benefit may be as little as a third
of your full benefit amount. Note that benefits paid to
your spouse do not decrease your benefit amount. If you
have already reached full retirement age but continue to
work, you can apply for retirement benefits and request
to have the payments suspended until as late as age 70.
This would let you earn delayed retirement credits that

will mean higher payments later, but still would allow
your spouse to receive a spouse’s benefit. People can
also apply for spouse benefits based on the earnings
record of an ex-spouse or deceased spouse if married for
at least 10 years. Spouses can consider a number of options and variables. We make it easier to navigate them.
A good place to start is by visiting our benefits planner at
www.socialsecurity.gov/planners. Take note of the “Benefits As A Spouse” section. If you are ready to apply for
benefits, the fastest, easiest, and most convenient way is

SSA office. “I see this office as an extension of the community. We should treat people who visit or call us the
same way we would treat our own family members,” he
said. “Our mission is to provide the best possible service
to the public.“
One of his major goals is increasing community awareness about the agency‘s website,
wwww.socialsecurity.gov, and all the convenient services
that are available there. “For example, you can request a
Social Security Statement by creating an online account
at my Social Security.”
The Chester office also gives visitors the option to conduct their business online. ”We have two self-help computer stations, so when people come in, they can file their
retirement or disability application themselves, if they
would like to do so,” he said. “One of our workers is always ready to help, if needed. This is one more way we
can provide the best service to our visitors.”

9 week conflict between Jupiter and Uranus
ARIES - March 21- April 19
Your perceptions are sharpened but Mars is complicating your actions. Hold back on permanent decisions
until Mercury goes Direct and expect transition on the job
and in personal relationships. Best numbers 4 and 7.
TAURUS - April 20 - May 20
Your learning curve is steep and your appetite
for indolence is high. Add to that Mercury Retrograde and
you’ll keep everyone guessing about what’s motivating you.
Best numbers 9 and 3.
GEMINI - May 21 - June 21
Think back to the last Mercury Retrograde because similar communication woes are likely now. Self indulgence could be your undoing and caution with prickly
friends is advised. Best numbers 21 and 1.
CANCER - June 22 - July 22
Jupiter in your sign gives you good fortune and
unexpected breaks. Though you usually only believe in what you can see you maybe surprised by what’s
blocking your way. Best number 10 and 1.
LEO - July 23 - August 22
This week offers excellent opportunities for
gathering information that only you’ll find useful “FOR
NOW”. Just have patience with your vulnerabilities in the
weeks to come. Best numbers 19 and 2.
VIRGO - August 23 - September 22
Determination comes easily but love and friendship issues could be tricky. Are you expectation out of line
with others people abilities to fulfill expectations? That’s
why Virgo should have hobbies. Best numbers 8 and 11.
LIBRA - September 23 - October 22
Hold off on decisions making until you have all
the information. Stick with the folks who have a sense of
humor; they’ll get you through the tuff spots, Best numbers
17 and 0.
SCORPIO - October 23 - November 21
It’s a good time to stop bad habits. It’s also an accident prone time, so make an extra effort to be careful at
all times. Best numbers 3 and 6.
SAGITTARIUS - November 22 - Dececember 21
Its Showtime, for a relationship that’s been on
a back burner. You may need to let others shine, which is
fine as long as you’re not the person picking up their slack.
Best numbers 5 and 8.
CAPRICORN -December 22 - January 19
Venus is snuggled up in your sign and you’ll
be putting out barn fires vibe to all, even those who toot
their own horns. Best numbers 0 and 7.
AQUARIUS - January 20 - February 18
Choices are clearer and health matters take
center stage this week. If you need a workout
buddy, fire sign folks will provide the most entertainment.
Best numbers 6 and 9.
PISCES - February 19 - March 20
Others could accuse you of complaining about
nothing. So if you’ve been looking for an exit from unpleasant work or a relationship past its prime, your chance
could come this month. Best numbers 2 and 5.
