The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is a young, dynamic institution founded in 1968, and is among

UAB Idiomes Barcelona
UAB Idiomes Barcelona is the School of Modern Languages of the UAB in Barcelona. Our school offers a
professional language teaching service to the local and international community.
Our commitment to a high standard of teaching and a high level of professionalism are the two principles on
which our service is based. With almost three thousand five hundred students enrolled last year in the different
types of language training that we offer – foreign language courses, in-company courses and Spanish courses
for international students – together with the guarantee of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, our centre
ensures that students receive a service of the highest quality.
Our centre is located in an art nouveau building, UAB-Casa Convalescència, part of a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, just a few minutes away from the centre of Barcelona. Its top quality premises include airconditioned classrooms equipped with the latest technology, wifi access, learning centre and library, cafeteria
and restaurant.
Our Spanish Department
The Spanish department is made up of a team of 16 teachers with broad training in languages and teaching.
They are experienced professionals who have received internal training to be able to offer the teaching style
and quality that is characteristic of the center. UAB Idiomes is a pioneer in the application of new technology
in the classroom and our teachers regularly take part in national and international seminars presenting the
UAB Idiomes model to introduce the web 2.0 to other teaching centers.
Our teachers are qualified language teaching professionals, dedicated to providing a successful learning
experience. We aim to create a dynamic environment in which students feel at ease, and receive all the support
they need to achieve their educational goal.

Our Spanish courses
UAB Idiomes Barcelona provides high quality teaching to enable our students to make rapid progress and
use their Spanish in an effective and practical way. Our Spanish courses also introduce the student to the
cultural and social customs of the country.
Intensive courses of 4 hours a day, 20 hours a week, running all year, start dates every month. Students can
join our courses for a minimum of 4 weeks. Class sizes: 6-15 students. Minimum age 18.
Tailor made courses for groups for universities and educational agencies. Group size: 4-18 students; we can
cater for up to 180 students.
General courses: adapted to the specific needs of each group.
Preparation for DELE exams: we prepare students for the three official exams of the Instituto
Cervantes to obtain the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Inicial, Intermedio y Superior).
Preparation for the Diploma de Español de los Negocios: we prepare students for the two official
exams of the Cámara de Comercio de Barcelona (DIEN – Diploma Intermedio de Español de los Negocios y
DSEN – Diploma Superior de Español de los Negocios).
Specific needs courses: we design courses to meet students’ specific needs, for oral presentations,
writing skills, study abroad, etc.
Monographic courses: we offer courses in Spanish culture including Spanish Cinema, Modernist
Barcelona, Spanish Contemporary History, Spanish Culture and Traditions, The Architecture of Barcelona.
Individual One-to-One courses arranged with a personalized program for the student. They can be
combined with intensive courses.
A placement test, continuous assessment and individual tutorials are included in all our Spanish courses.

Languages. Each course corresponds to 80 hours of class time.

Our Spanish courses are certified by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and are valid for
university credits (ECTS – European Credit Transfer System).
Methodology
The methodological focus of the courses at UAB Idiomes is communicative and task-based. The basic
principles of our methodology are:





The students and their needs in terms of the use of language are the central point of our training
processes, and our programs are therefore flexible so that we can adapt to each group-class.
Promote student autonomy and teach the potential of the learning environment outside the
classroom.
Orientate the training process towards the communicative use of language in the four basic skills
(listening, speaking, reading and writing), over formal grammar rules.
Contextualize the learning process in real situations and appropriate socio-cultural environments.
Evaluate student skills not only on their communicative language competences bit also taking into
account more general competences which, although they may not be directly related to language,
are necessary for efficiently carrying out different language-related tasks (cultural knowledge,
strategies for relating to people, mastery of interpersonal registers, non-verbal communication,
etc.)

Assessment






Initial online test and oral test in-situ to find out the starting point for each student and
understand their way of learning.
Continuous assessment and the production of a personal diary to record students’ learning.
Tutorials at mid-course and at the end of the course.
For regular courses: a final test in each course to assess competence and progress in the four basic
skills, vocabulary and grammar, and if the student is able progress to the next level the aspects that
require most work. These results are discussed in the individual tutorials.
Final exam for the award of a certificate. UAB Idiomes issues a certificate for the last course
taken by students and the credits obtained are recognized by all the universities with which we
have worked.
Study Abroad program: at mid-course the teachers produce an individual report on the
satisfactory aspects and aspects that require improvement and one class is dedicated to individual
tutorials to discuss the report and allow the student to see exactly where they stand.

We highly recommend that students arrange adequate personal insurance for travel, illness, accidents or loss of

We offer our students carefully selected host families. Accommodation is in single or twin rooms. Students can

MelonDistrict is a new model of residence hall for students with single and twin rooms with private bathroom,
a shared cooking lounge to cook, relate and relax, and at the roof a pool and solarium to enjoy the Barcelona

Accommodation on Campus
The Campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is located in Bellaterra. It is well connected by
motorways and public transport network to Barcelona, only 25 km away.
Vila Universitària apartments
(Available in July and August only)
Vila Universitària is the UAB Student Residence complex on Campus, built for the ‘92 Olympics, and
accommodating more than 2,000 guests.
D – Apartment: 30 m2 – 1 double room (either for 2 guests or for individual use) with one bathroom, one
kitchen, and full equipment with sheets, towels and kitchen utensils.
Students staying at the Vila Universitària can also use the following facilities and services:

Bookings for individual students
If you have a student who is interested in coming to study at UAB Idiomes Barcelona, he/she should
complete and send us the Online Application form at our web www.uab.es/uab-idiomes
When we receive the Application form of your student we will confirm that he/she is enrolled on the chosen
course and send him/her a welcome letter to UAB Idiomes Barcelona.
Bookings for individual students
We offer tailor made courses to suit different groups. We cater for up to 180 students in classes from 4 to 18
students. These courses are only offered on special request by universities and educational agencies, and quotes
are given individually.
Visas for Spain
It is the duty of each student to ascertain the correct entry requirements for entering Spain at their nearest
Embassy or Consulate. Citizens of the EEC do not normally require visas but UAB Idiomes Barcelona cannot
accept responsibility if students are denied entry into the country.
Barcelona, more than 2,000 years old, breathes the air of the Mediterranean from all sides.
Its origin as a Roman colony is a testament to the importance that the sea has had on the history of the city.
Because it is located in a very privileged location, on the south-eastern part of the European continent, the sea
provides a very benevolent climate smoothed out by the sea day and night, winter and summer.
Barcelona has always been a crossroads between the land and the sea. Through the centuries, the two have
been melted and mixed into some of the most important cultural aspects of the Mediterranean. These ancient
civilizations remain prevalent in the area through the artistic and historic displays of architecture, art and
culture.
Today, Barcelona is a modern, cosmopolitan city, with many great dynamics. The climate, the short walking
distances and the great network of public transportation are all great luxuries available to all citizens and
visitors. Its cosmopolitan population and economic importance coupled with an exceptional climate and
vibrant atmosphere makes it a very attractive proposition all year round.
