 HOLY FRACTAL CADMAN!
REVIEW BY GEORGE NELSON
Seven by Seven Gold Coast Design Talk Two – A SELL OUT! BAM! Sell Out Event, Red Carpets, Paparazzi, …. GOSH! One could be mistaken for thinking there was a celebrity launch! Well, not too far from the truth. Event two for Seven by Seven saw a growing recognition of established local Designer talent who are taking on the world with an element and flair of celebrity. SNAP! Gold Coast Designers heighten the presence of impeccable local design practice with an authority. The event brands with certainty, the Gold Coast as an International Design Capital. The Design Institute of Australia Queensland Branch Gold Coast Committee hosted the second in its Seven by Seven Talk Series last Friday Night with a strong crowd of nearly 100 designers and design believers, who kept the space warm with the buzzing passion of every person in the room. The event focused on ‘established talent’ and was hosted at Spendelove Bistro & Bar. The venue and food were a delight. A strong favorite was the crown of puff pastry treated with goats cheese and a sweet beetroot roulade. A fantastic compliment to the Seven by Seven Talk Series, Spendelove has hosted Architectural Awards and lends itself well to any social occasion. Mark Goudie shared how his too successful Brandhaus was re-‐branded to Pluvo as his business in the power of perception needed to broaden its scope to more than just great branding. "Our directors offer knowledge, creativity and skill which delivers business solutions for clients ranging from local business entrepreneurs to global brands like McDonalds, Nokia, Gillette and many more, “ Mark shared with a big smile. Daniel Della-‐Bosca mesmerized the audience much like a magician with his passion for fractal mathematics and research. Exquisite design objects born of mathematics and pattern. His pallet is made up of; complexity, simplicity, chaos, randomness and beauty. He unashamedly shared his passion and obsession for fractal design in an intelligent and articulate display. Chocolate, Ice-‐cream and not taking ones self too seriously is the catch cry of international success Yellow Goat Design. Conrad Johnsson and Dasomm Choi left audiences a gasp with their approach, humility and portfolio of spectacular lighting objects which have set a new benchmark globally. Europe, USA, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia and the world seem to be the stage which hosts the elaborate creations of the Yellow Goat Design Team. HOLY FRACTAL CADMAN!
The evening had something for every designer; the digital, the industrial, interior, graphics, marketing, even the self-‐development of humanity. David Cuschieri selflessly shared his personal journey on how to Design ones own life. While Angela Lomas recounted her late nights and global networks which provide her with a Gold Coast design practice which spans the world. Professor Philip Follent tantalized the audience with an announcement of a $16million cathedral like shrine to architecture and design education, which will house the Architecture and Design School at Bond University. Designed by Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham of CRAB Studios in London, who won the Bond University’s international competition in 2010, the building will serve generations to come and will have a significant focus on connecting with community, for all types of events to be hosted there. Natasha Edwards delighted participants with the journey of how the Swell Sculpture festival has come to be an iconic part of the Gold Coast calendar for public artists and designers. Starting with only 14 local designers to over 50 international artists in 2012 has seen the attendance and appreciation of Swell festival grow phenomenally from 6,000 to over 178,000 past year. Lets see if we cant burst through he 200,000 visitor mark this year. The aesthetic appreciation of creativity is not the only benefit of this festival. Natasha illuminated the audience with the research reporting the $6.2 million benefit injected on the local Gold Coast economy as a result. And to think on this cool night many would have curled in under their blankets in front of the television missing this magnificent sharing of ideas and practice. Pleasingly the majority of participants had attended both event one and two with an ocean of comments on their appreciation of the hard work DIAQ Gold Coast Committee is putting in to deliver these events for the local Design Community. On the second of November Sea Temple, Surfers Paradise at Soul, will be the location for our third Seven by Seven which is planned as a Gala celebration of Design followed by a VIP party. A members and guests only event, we encourage all our participants to become local Gold Coast DIA members, if you aren’t already. Please purchase your tickets early as the past two events have been sold out in days. There is a creation of a strong identifiable force of designers on the Gold Coast and I believe we have not yet scratched the surface. A special thank you to our volunteers and sponsors, without which these events and the collaborative benefit for the local design economy would not be possible. If you are keen to support his dynamic presence and reach a passionate design audience please contact the DIAQ Gold Coast Committee for sponsorship opportunities.
