NATIONAL LEAGUE FOR NURSING (NLN)
PRE-ADMISSION EXAM (PAX-RN and PAX-PN)
STUDENTS WILL REGISTER AND PAY ON-LINE AT
www.nlnonlinetesting.org
Instructions:
1. Log on to www.nlnonlinetesting.org and create an account.
2. Select Registration>Registration Store>Register by Location and follow prompts to pay $40
for the appropriate exam – PAX-RN or PAX-PN.
3. There is a $15 fee to change test dates once registered. No refund 48 hours prior to exam.
4. All further communication is done through the NLN testing services. A study guide can be
purchased online from the NLN.org. At this link http://goo.gl/iXkdl The MATC library also
has a bank of Occupation Practice Tests for Pre Nursing. Go to http://books.matc.edu and
select “Learning Express (test prep)”

6. Exams are taken in room H126 every other Friday from 12:30 - 4:00.
The National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX) is a standardized
entrance exam for potential nursing students who seek admittance into nursing schools
nationwide.
The NLN PAX RN and PN comprises three main areas: Verbal skills, which consists of both
word knowledge and reading comprehension; Mathematics, which includes basic
calculations, word problems, and incorporates algebra, geometry, conversions, graphs, and
applied mathematics; and Science, which examines general biology, chemistry, physics, and
earth science. The NLN PAX-PN includes the above content as well as a section on health
and first aid.
Each three sections consist of all multiple-choice questions and include experimental items
for the purpose of future test development. Answers to these questions are not counted in
the scoring.
There are 80 Verbal questions, 54 Math questions and 80 Science questions. Each exam is
limited to one hour.
To arrange special accommodations contact the MATC Student Accommodation Services in
room C219, Downtown Campus. 414-297-6750. Arrangements must be made three weeks
prior to testing date.

MATC exam guidelines:
Students are allowed to take the same exam twice, but must wait six months between exam
dates. Students can take the PAX RN exam and PAX PN exam within six months because
they are two different exams. The PAX RN examinees can petition for the ADN program
only. PAX PN examinees can petition for the LPN program only. See counselor if you
change your program. Exam cannot score below 100. The target score is 130, but students
can petition with scores above 100.

Specific Criteria and info for the HP-A2 Exam
If you would like to take this exam again, you must:



Wait 3 months to retake the exam.
Take the exam in its entirety (we cannot give portions of the exam).
Pay for the entire exam – $34.00 (subject to change).
How do I obtain my test scores?
Test scores will be available to students immediately following the exam. The college
will also have access to the test scores. Students may access their scores and remediate
through their online Evolve account. A copy of the report of pre-admission test scores
must be submitted with the student’s petition for the desired Allied Health program.
What do my test scores mean?
Exam scores are reviewed as one criterion in the petition selection process. Scores are
used to determine students’ academic preparedness for selected Allied Health programs.

MATH

multiplication, fractions, decimals,
ratio and proportion, household

in calculating drug dosages and
solutions.
READING COMPREHENSION
47 items; 60 minutes
Health-related reading scenarios that measure
reading comprehension. Identify the main idea,
find meaning of words in context, passage
comprehension, and making logical inferences.
GRAMMAR
60 items; 60 minutes
Contains basic grammar, including
parts of speech, important terms and
their uses, commonly occurring
grammatical errors, etc.

When do I take the pre-admission exam?
The HP-A2 and LPN - RN pre-admission exams are taken prior to petitioning for selected
MATC Allied Health and Nursing programs.
How much does the exam cost?
The cost of the HP-A2 pre-admission exam is $34.00 /LPN-RN $41.00(subject to change).
The examination fee is the responsibility of the student and is paid directly to Evolve.
Test purchase available two weeks before testing date. Closed 24 hours before testing date.

HOW TO SIGN UP AND REGISTER FOR THE HP-A2 (HESI EXAM) FOR ALLIED HEALTH STUDENTS & LPN-RN Progression
1. Go to http://ecampus.matc.edu/H126
2. Retrieve the four digit “HP-A2 Exam Payment ID code”
The code will be available two weeks before the scheduled exam date at noon. 40 seats will be
available. You will be able to purchase the exam any time prior to the exam date/time or until
sold out.
3. Go to http://evolve.elsevier.com and “Create an account”

4. Fill out Account Information and “Submit” it will automatically generate your Username and
Password. Then select “Continue.”

5. Select “Evolve Catalog” (This page will also appear if you log into your account)

6. Select the purple HESI EXAMS button and then “Register for HESI”
7. Select “REGISTER”

8. Update your Account information and then select “Continue”.
9. Select “SUBMIT”

10. After Confirmation, Return to “My Evolve”

12. Select “Exam Payments” tab and Enter the four digit Payment ID from Step 2.
