International   Agronomy

International   Agronomy   is   designed   for   students   interested   in   the   agronomic   aspects   of   international   agricultural   development.

Students   in   this   concentration   area   need   advanced   education   and   should   have   a   strong   science   background.

Students   select   electives   that   develop   an   understanding   of   foreign   cultures,   languages,   customs,   politics,   and   development   problems   as   well   as   international   relations,   world   trade,   world   religions,   and   the   United   States’   role   in   international   agricultural   development.

This   program   of   study   emphasizes   the   role   of   agronomic   skills   in   addressing   global   food   security.

Employment   Opportunities

The   International   Agronomy   program   prepares   students   for   opportunities   in   world   agriculture   in   two   areas:    (1)   social   action   agencies,   such   as   agricultural   missions,

International   Voluntary   Service,   Peace   Corps,   other   U.S.

government   programs,   and   private   volunteer   organizations;   and   (2)   professional   careers   in   international   agricultural   development,   such   as   technical   specialists   with   international   programs   of   universities,   international   development   centers,   private   foundations,   or   U.S.

and   international   government   assistance   agencies,   and   multi ‐ national   companies.

The   starting   salary   for   graduates   ranges   from   $32,000 ‐ $42,000.

Starting   salaries   for   graduates   working   in   the

Peace   Corps   or   other   social   service   agencies   may   be   lower.

Summer   Employment   and   Internships

Students   majoring   in   International   Agronomy   are   encouraged   to   spend   their   summers   studying   abroad   or   working   for   companies   or   organizations   that   provide   international   work   experiences   and   opportunities.

The   experience   gained   from   summer   employment   will   help   students   identify   areas   of   interest,   and   will   make   classes   more   relevant   and   valuable.

An   internship   placement   program   is   available   for   Purdue   students.

Prospective   employers   look   very   favorably   on   job   applicants   who   have   successfully   completed   one   or   more   internships,   therefore   internship   experience   is   strongly   recommended   for   students   earning   a   B.S.

  degree.

   Internship   opportunities   exist   nationwide.
