Why a Career as a
Physician Assistant?



They are trained to assist the physicians and surgeons in a
variety of settings. This includes the operating room, perform
medical history and physical examinations, order and interpret
diagnostic tests, compile operative reports, write post operative
orders, and manage patients in the surgical and medical
intensive care unit and wards.
Insert and remove lines, surgical drains and pacemaker wires;
apply and remove casts and splints; suture; and attend to all
needs of the medical, surgical and emergency medicine
patient.
Prescribe medications (in most states).
The UAB PA Program:



Is an extensive educational program that includes structured
clinical experiences in medical and surgical specialties.
Is accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on
Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
Graduates are eligible to apply for the National Certification of
Physician Assistants Exam (PANCE) (required for licensure by
all states).

Application Process
Application Deadline: Applications are accepted only through the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) at
www.caspaonline.org. Applicant processing by CASPA begins May 1 for classes entering the following academic year. The deadline to
submit ALL application materials is September 1. Late applications will not be accepted.
Requirements for Admission: Enrollment is limited. Acceptance is based on student’s academic ability and aptitude for a career as a
surgical physician assistant. Successful completion of admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. The
candidate is expected to satisfy the following requirements: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university and
successful completion of prerequisite coursework; A minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in program
prerequisite coursework with a minimum grade of C in each course (average GPA of students admitted is 3.5); acceptable GRE scores,
technical ability to complete the program (essential requirements below); interview with faculty; clinical experience (not required but
preferred); personal statement and letters of support.
Essential Requirements: Fundamental tasks, behaviors, and abilities necessary to successfully complete the academic and clinical/
residency requirements of the program and to satisfy licensure/certification requirements, if any, have been outlined and are available upon

Students complete 9 five-week rotations for a total of 45 hours of
clinical service during the clinical year. Of these rotations, 7 are
required rotations, and 2 are elective rotations.
