I’m extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to work for NSR. While I was employed in the Pedigree Department, I met breeders from
across the country, become familiar with popular swine genetics and ultimately built friendships within the industry that will last a lifetime. The
connections I developed have proven to be a great benefit while pursuing a career in the livestock industry. Currently, I’m earning a master’s
degree in agriculture communications while working for a livestock marketing company, Rural Route Creations. Due to my time with the NSR, I’m
more familiar with the breeders, exhibitors and even the judges I meet in the ring while covering shows and sales.
I encourage all youth to obtain an internship at some point in their life. Not only do the networking and opportunities provided add to your résumé, but the
level of maturity you gain from holding a job of this caliber is irreplaceable.
– Katie Powers, 2012 Pedigree Intern, Currently at Oklahoma State University pursuing a master’s degree in agricultural communications

Jen Gillespie
Director of Marketing & Communications
National Swine Registry
2639 Yeager Road
West Lafayette, IN 47906
765.463.3594
jen@nationalswine.com
The Marketing and Communications internship at National Swine Registry provided me with many opportunities to grow as a professional each and
every day. The projects I worked on gave me real-world experience in agricultural communications and countless opportunities to meet people
across the swine industry. My experience exposed me to a different side of communications and helped me to develop confidence in my abilities.
The skills I developed have put me ahead of my peers in the classroom and allowed me to step up and make meaningful contributions in my
current internship. None of this would have been possible without a staff that allowed me to try new ideas, make my own mistakes and provided support along
the way.
– Taylor Fritsch, 2012 Marketing & Communications Intern, Currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, studying life sciences communication
I had a handful of jobs throughout college, but my summer internship as the National Swine Registry NSR Marketing & Communications Intern
was by far the most rewarding and memorable. Unlike many internships that require you to focus on one project, NSR allowed me to tailor my
experience. I wrote and edited articles for Seedstock EDGE, designed ads and traveled to two national swine shows to take photos and cover the
events via news releases and website updates. I left that summer with a handful of pieces to add to my professional portfolio and confirmation that
I had chosen the right career path. I would encourage any student who has an interest in agricultural communications and the livestock industry to apply for
the NSR Marketing & Communications Internship.
– Megan Sheridan, 2004 Marketing & Communications Intern, Currently working as the Marketing Director for the Purdue University Center for Food and
Agricultural Business

Through my internship with NJSA, I learned more than the process of planning a national junior livestock event and working at a swine show.
I learned that it’s not about the pigs – it’s about the people. Without the people, we would not have this great organization. Throughout my
internship, I met numerous people who took me under their wing and taught me about so much more than pigs. That is something I will take with
me throughout my career and my life.
– Ali Harwell, 2012 NJSA Intern, Currently a senior at Michigan State University, studying agricultural education
I grew up on our family farm and always had a passion for raising pigs and the swine industry, so when the NJSA internship opportunity came
along, I knew it would be something that would benefit my future career as a pork producer. Through my internship I was able to travel, help plan
and execute events, meet numerous industry professionals and work with youth who were passionate about the pork industry. The NJSA internship
experience certainly strengthened my leadership role as a pork producer.

In an effort to make things simple, my experience with NSR as the 2012 Field Staff Intern was life changing and has modified me in ways that will
only help solidify success that is to come. The knowledge, skills, relationships and insight I gained are unparalleled by any other experience in
my lifetime. I can tell you that my future endeavors will be saturated by the swine industry and having the opportunity to fortify my skill set with
industry experience will give me that competitive edge when applying for future opportunities!
– Corey Carpenter, 2012 Field Staff Intern, Currently a senior at California State University – Chico, studying animal science
Little did I know that the summer of 2009 would change my life forever. My time as a Field Staff Intern for the National Swine Registry did just
that. It allowed me the opportunity to meet and visit with the greatest people in the swine industry. Most importantly, I was able to learn from
each and every one of them. Not only that, it created networking opportunities for future careers and friendships, both personal and professional.
My knowledge and passion for the purebred swine industry grew immensely during my time in West Lafayette. I would recommend anyone with a
passion for animal agriculture apply for this position.
