Modestus is a lazy yet greedy soldier. Realising that he has no money he has come up with a ‘foolproof’ way of getting a free and luxurious dinner... He has sent out his colleague Strythio to tell their friends that he, Modestus, is seriously ill, though very hungry and thirsty. So ill is he that he is drawing up his will and deciding which of his friends deserve to inherit the most from him. A. Read the following, & translate the Latin section, on alternate lines. 30 marks Strythio told the false story to his fellow‐soldiers Aulus and Publicus, and to a barmaid called Nigrina. They were all taken in by it and Aulus said to the others:“we must give Modestus splendid gifts of food and wine.” itaque amici, amphoram vini optimi et magnum piscem adepti, ad Modestum
contenderunt. cum cubiculo appropinquarent, amici gemitus audiverunt.

Strythio, e cubiculo egressus, dixit: “morbus Modesti ingravescit. vobis melius
est dona dare et discedere.” cum amici discessissent, Modestus et Strythio
ridentes magnifice cenaverunt. post cenam Modestus tam ebrius erat ut multas
horas dormiret. postridie, Strythione per castra ambulante, amici ad cubiculum
Modesti redierunt ut cognoscerent quid accidisset. amici Modestum immotum
