CourseObjectives:Toprovideabroad‐basedintroductionforundergraduatesto
differenttypesofbiomaterials(metals,ceramics,polymers)andthebody’snatural
responsestobiomaterialimplantation.Topicscoveredwillincludehowbasic
principlesinchemistryandphysicsresultinstructuralandfunctionaldifferencesin
biomaterialtypes(firsthalf),aswellasbeneficialanddetrimentalbiological
responsestobiomaterialimplantation(secondhalf).
Throughexaminationofreal‐worldexamples,eachstudentwillbeencouragedto
takeresponsibilityfordevelopingandusingknowledge(understanding)and
expertise(criticalthinking)inproblemsassociatedwiththefieldofbiomaterials.
Tohelpindevelopmentofthisexpertise,studentswillbepresentedwitha“microto
macro”viewofthecomplexsystemsthatarisewhenmaterialsareimplantedinthe
body,whichcanbeusedasaframeworkfordeterminingthemostimportantdesign
parametersandtestingtypesforspecificbiomaterialsapplications.

Althoughdiscussionabouthomeworkproblemsisencouraged,eachstudentmust

courseworkthatmaybeassignedduringthesemester.

Homework:Twohomeworksetswillbeassignedduringthecourseofthe

Therewillbenomake‐upexamsforquizzes.Ifyouareforcedtomissaquizdueto

ofmissingthequiz,oryouwillreceivea0forthatquiz.Withproperdocumentation,

Exams:Therewillbeatotalof2closed‐bookexamsandacomprehensiveclosed‐
bookfinal.Examscan(andwill!)covermaterialinthetextbookthatisnot
mentionedinclasslectures,inadditiontothelecturematerial.However,themajor
emphasiswillbeontopicsdiscussedbothinthebookandinclass.
Thefirsttwoexamsarescheduledduringtheregularclasstimeonthedateslisted
above.Solutionstotheseexamswillbepostedontheclasswebsiteaftergradingis
complete.Examplesofoldexamsfrompastyearscanbefoundontheclasswebsite.
Therewillbenomake‐upexamsforExams1and2.IfyouareforcedtomissExam
1or2duetoillnessorfamilyemergency,youwillneedtoprovideappropriate
documentation(doctor’snote,etc.)within1weekofmissingtheexam,oryouwill
receivea0forthatexam.Withproperdocumentation,yourabsencewillbeexcused
andtheotherexamandfinalwillbeweightedmoretoaccountforthemissing
