NE1’S NEWCASTLE
COCKTAIL WEEK
Following the phenomenal success of the first NE1’s
Newcastle Cocktail Week last year, organisers have
poured another event into the mix.
More than 40 Newcastle city centre venues took
part in last year’s event, which offered big discounts on
cocktails, with drinks offered at three price points - £3, £5,
and £7. This year’s event will follow the same format and
as well as enjoying delicious cocktails aficionados can
learn the art of mixology at cocktail classes and events.

Ahead of NE1’s Newcastle Cocktail
Week (see right) we asked one of
the city’s leading mixologists to
pass on some top tips.
Finn Scanlon, bar manager at
Livello on Dean Street, has been
nominated for the Best Mixologist
prize in this year’s Licensed Trade
Show Benevolent Awards.
This summer, from the Livello
cocktail menu, Finn recommends:
Night Bloom Martini: Hayman's Sloe
Gin, Chase Rhubarb liqueur, cranberry
juice and a squeeze of lemon are
shaken hard then topped with a cassis
and hibiscus foam and an edible
hibiscus flower. “The perfect drink to
enjoy after a long day in the sun.”
Pyracy: Pyrat XO Reserve rum, Tuaca,
Martini Rosso and Aztec Chocolate
Bitters, stirred long and served over
an iceball. “My personal favourite from
the new cocktail menu, and somewhat
more accessible to the casual drinker
than the traditional Old Fashioned as
the rum is a lot easier on the palate.”
Strawberry Smash: Hayman's Sloe
Gin, Taylor's Port, strawberries, apple
juice, rhubarb bitters, basil leaves. “A
tall cooler, especially popular with the
ladies.” Lower Dean Street,

WHO KNEW?
The day Dr King
came to town
As recently
documented in a
special BBC
programme; on
November 13 1967, Newcastle
University presented civil rights
campaigner Martin Luther King with an
honorary degree - the only UK university
to do so during his lifetime. Dr King, who
was made an Honorary Doctor of Civil
Law, visited the UK for just 24 hours to
pick up the award during a busy
schedule which included campaigning
for Carl Stokes in his successful bid to
become the first black mayor of
Cleveland, Ohio. Dr King received his
degree from the Duke of
Northumberland in King’s Hall and spoke
there about his struggle for racial justice.

One of comedy’s best-loved characters
returns to The Stand in July on his way
to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The Pub Landlord (aka Al Murray) is
at The Stand on July 1 with his One Man,
One Guvnor (Work in progress) show, 20
years after he embarked on his one-man
mission as the King Cnut of Common
Sense, holding back a tide of bottled
beer and nonsense.
Murray then returns to Newcastle

NE1’S Newcastle Fashion Week is over
for another year, but NE1 continues to
spread the fashion joy.
Kevin Bianen, 22, from North Shields
(main picture) was named Newcastle’s Most
Stylish in the annual competition which
marks the nine-day extravaganza that is
NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week.
Bianen, a supervisor at Bank Fashion,
Northumberland Street, says: “Being named
Newcastle’s most stylish is an amazing
honour. There were a lot of interesting looks
in the competition and I’m so happy the
judges saw something in me that stood out
from the rest. I’m just glad they caught me on
a good day!
“My favourite fashion stylist/blogger is
Reinaldo Irrizary (reyalfashion.com). I love
how he looks at all the details of an outfit,
even down to the socks. I try to do the same
when I‘m putting a look together.”
More than 60 people were photographed
by NE1 style scouts and photographers for
the competition, and age was no barrier, with
87-year-old Muriel among the 10 finalists
(pictured left).
The public voted for their favourites on
NE1’s Facebook page - with the top ten
judged by a panel including the team at
NE1 Ltd and Metro Radio.
Kevin was the undisputed winner

CATS!
CATS!
MIAOWWW!
AS CATS HEADS TO THE THEATRE ROYAL,
DEAN BAILEY REGALES US WITH SOME FAB FELINE FACTS
• Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical
Cats is based on T.S Eliot’s collection
of whimsical poems, Old Possum’s
Book of Practical Cats (1939).
• Cats may share human musical
sensibilities and show signs of distress
when music is played out of tune,
particularly when it is from their favourite
West End show.
• The musical tells the story of a tribe
of cats called the Jellicles and the
night they make what is known as ‘the
Jellicle choice’ and decide which cat
will ascend to the Heaviside Layer; a
layer in Earth’s atmosphere which is
used here to symbolise Heaven. This
is what real cats do when they go out
at night.
• The show requires eight 40ft trucks to
transport the sets, instruments, sound
and light systems. There are hundreds of
costumes and wigs and a team of more
than 70 people work backstage. There
are no real cats in the show, though
some of the cast and crew are reported
to have cats at home.
SEEN BY MORE
THAN 50M PEOPLE
• Cats opened at the New London
Theatre on May 11 1981 and played
almost 9,000 performances. It
closed on May 11 2002, the longestrunning musical in the history of the
British theatre.
• On Broadway, the show ran for 18
years, second only to The Phantom of
the Opera in terms of longevity.
• Cats has been seen by more than
50m people worldwide and has been
staged in more than 300 cities. It is
said to be particularly popular with
British cats called Twinkle.
• The show has featured some of the
UK’s most famous stage performers
including Elaine Paige, Wayne Sleep,
Bonnie Langford, Paul Nicholas, Brian
Blessed, and Sarah Brightman.
• The song Memory has been
recorded by more than 150 artists
including Barbra Streisand, Johnny
Mathis, Barry Manilow, and Liberace,
and a techno version topped dance
charts in 1999. Research shows that
only 0.000000001% of the population
knows the second line of the song.
• Cats was last seen in the UK in 2008
when a hugely successful tour played to
sell-out audiences across the country.
• Studies show that a diet of classical
music can reduce aggressive
behaviours in cats. There are no
known studies yet to indicate the
effect of a recording of Liberace
singing Memory on the mindset of a
live cat, but it is felt to be inadvisable.

every summer. I love Newcastle. I first
played here in 1971 at the City Hall
with the original three-piece Elton
John Band.”
On his kids, Zachary, three and Elijah
Joseph Daniel, one: “I always thought I
might be really irritable with kids, but no
way. Both my parents had tempers and
I don’t ever want to display that in front
of the children. In the past, particularly
when I was on drugs, there was a
monstrous side to me, but I’m not really
like that.”
On his work-life balance: “We take the
kids everywhere at the moment, but
Zachary’s going to school in 2015 and I
want to drop him off and pick him up, be
there for parents’ evenings and sports
day. I’m so looking forward to it.”
On his near-death experience in
summer 2013: “I did nine shows, 24
flights and played the White Tie and Tiara
Ball [the annual fundraiser for the Elton
John Aids Foundation] with Coldplay and
a burst appendix. I’m lucky to be alive.”
On popping his fesitval cherry at
Bestival last year: “I was talked into it
and thank God I was because I had the
best time.”
On being a workaholic: “I’m addicted to
working. I can’t have one pair of shoes,
one CD, one bunch of flowers, one car;
that’s my mindset. If I do 120 shows in a
year, I want to do 130 the next year.”
On the fact that, in 46 years, Elton
and lyricist Bernie Taupin have never
written a song in the same room:“I
just go into the studio, look at the lyrics
for the first time when I put them on the
piano, and go. If I haven’t got it within 40
minutes, I give up.”
On things still left to achieve: “I’ve
always wanted to play at the pyramids,
but they banned me from going there a
couple of years ago because I’m gay. I’ve
got musicals to write, films to produce.
And I want to grow old with my children.”
On becoming the first recipient of the
Brits Icon award: “They even made it
sparkly on the bottom, which I love!”
