I was interested in theatre. I LOVED performing, directing, speech and I taught theatre for 14 years. Theatre was and still is like a medicine for me. I then started to teach speech in the ESL. Is there a motto in your teachings? Expect a lot of yourself and expect a lot of your students. Teachers are in love with teaching. Some people may ask, why don’t you run for the president? I really wanted to. I had a dream of becoming one since I was a little girl. I couldn’t because I wasn’t born in America. If I were to be a president, I would change the textbooks for education, because children inevitably learn hate and I don’t want that to happen. Are you aware that you are a strict teacher? I’m strict to myself and strict to my students, meaning that I want students to succeed. What was the most memorable event that happened with students? Few years ago I had a student who was very silent. She never spoke in class and always sat at the back. One day we had speech and I wondered how she would speak. Surprisingly, her speech was perfect. It was brilliant! Later I invited her to go to a speech contest. She denied at first, but I begged and even called her house. She then decided to take it. Eventually, she got in second place. Two years later some girl called me, “Hello? Peggy Shapiro?” …When I turned I didn’t recognize because she was thin and beautiful. She came to me and said “2 years ago, because of the contest it totally changed my life. I lost weight, got a great job and moreover, I gained confidence. You changed my life.” I couldn’t stop but cry. For 31 years (WOW), what was your motivation for teaching? Students What is your future plan? I’ve been working as a freelance writer with Elie Wiesel who’s a Holocaust survivor. He won the Nobel Peace prize and I’m still working with making his anthology. Did you enjoy teaching and would you still like to teach? Every minute. I’ll always teach. Any message for the students? Thank you. You made my life rich. Ask Dr. Sparkle Responses Hello Dr. Sparkle, My dear Anonymous, I have a problem. My classmate brings his notebook every day and questions about it, which is quite ignoring. He opens his notebook and starts to write something and I feel like I want to tear out all of my hair! Sometimes I want to punch him in the eye, in order to get him out my sight. I don’t know why, but I feel uncomfortable every time I see it. My question is how I can tell him to stop doing this without hurting his feelings. Is there any way to not hurt his heart? Sincerely yours, Anonymous No, no! Please don’t tear out your beautiful hair! I think I can help you. If you really care about him, try to explain your sincere heart that you’re not interested in his notebook. He should understand if he has feelings for you. Also, why wont you give him to read this newsletter if you are afraid. He may realize how you are feeling. I hope this will help Good luck. Dr. Sparkle Students of HWC!! Our fist meet was very fun because I meet her at middle school. Our first place was washroom and second meet was washroom. She is not height but she has cute face. Her face looks like a Reese Witherspoon. Her eyes have star. Her skin’s color is milk and her smile is a girl not a woman. I was became so lazy and.....lazy. I have a motto in my mind. If I can sit down, I am never stand up. If I can lie down, I am never sit down. You can see how lazy I am. Another reason I chose this picture is I love money!!! Some one said: We live for the money. I think it's 50% right and 50% wrong. Except money, I think the family and friendship are so important in my life also. If you got a lot of money, but you lose you family and your friends, that's be not worth the candle. Because you can't share your happy with anyone, you are alone. I am selfish guy,(*_*) so I hope I can have a lot of money, and still have a wonderful family and my great friends!! The house is very old. It almost has 100 years history. It was built by my grandfather's grandfather. So it is the traditional chinese style.I like it very much. I grew up here. When I was a child, my grandfather always held me and sat on the balcony. At night he often told me some stories and sang with me. These are happy memories. At the age of 5, I moved to a city. But I have never forgotten the house, because I had spent the happiest time in my life in the house.” Bilin The “Extra Sparkly Lens” Newsletter Page 4 of 8 Student Poem Babyhood English is the entrance of my new life. Please mind to send any of your awesome writings and pictures to… hwceslnewsletter@yahoo.com Fresh and Spicy Can you imagine how a day would be without tiredness and no hassles? I worked all day on Saturday so my decision was to treat myself with fresh delicious seafood at my favorite Red Lobster Restaurant despite the higher prices. . I went to the one at Lincolnwood but it was filled with people so I drove to the one at 50 West Ohio at Chicago which was also packed with people. The interior was designed with red mahogany wood. The middle section had chairs arranged in circles. Everyone seemed happy with a lot of smiling faces just happy be at their favorite Red Lobster Restaurant. The music at the background is so soft as lullaby. I chose this restaurant to be my favorite because they serve scrumptious foods. For example they serve lobster, shrimp, rice and other sea foods that when you eat you feel your tongue craving for more. Looking on the tables around me it appeared that shrimp feast was the favorite dish ordered by most people on that day. We sat at the middle section for our dinner. The main dish was shrimp feast, rice mixed with vegetable and lobster. Some of the food we ordered was the one above. For appetizers, I ordered thin crust shrimp. The rest of my family ordered stuffed mushrooms and ceasar salad. I had Sunset Passion Colada blended with Malibu and rum topped with strawberry so red like blood. The day was windy and drizzling with a temperature of about forty degrees so the drink makes me tipsy I love Red Lobster because their seafood is very delicious. They have high quality service that makes you enjoy the food. They ask you many times if you needed something. It is the best seafood place I enjoy dinning at especially when I have friends visiting. Go Red Lobster. Yummy. 2324 South Archer 312-225-2652 It’s not just the king; it’s BBQ king. That BBQ king house located in Chinatown, the room always cozy, there has many kind of oriental Chinese style food, especially the BBQ food. With my friend’s highly recommendation, I stepped in this restaurant with full of surprises. http://www .eslrestaur antreviewf a06.blogs pot.com Restaurant Review Blog for Lev 6 The Taste From Oriental I’ve tried the original HK style food, which was the best Chinese meal I’ve never had before. I like the tasty food, pleasant service, amusing design, and reasonable prices. The origin Peking duck and BBQ pork are very famous. In particular, I like the salt and pepper shrimp, and cashew chicken and Mongolia beef. Also the egg rolls, which were made with shrimp, vegetable, and pork, you can mix it with sweet and sour sauce. They served many variety of drink, like HK style milk tea, milk shake, and honey lemon tea, but except alcohol. Therefore, you can bring you own wine. The room is designed to match the oriental Chinese, so there are many calligraphies handing on the walls. I would like to sit down and enjoy the special views of the calligraphies. While I sat down, the waitress immediately seats us down and offered us a teapot of oolong tea. They served the food fast; we didn’t have to spend too much time on waiting the food. The prices are very reasonable; the foods are all less than 10 for a large size meal. They have lunch special every day except weekend. This is one of the place I felt satisfied for both appetite and spirit. Yanting Huang ESL 5 class visit to the Freedom Museum What is a library? A library is a building in which collections of books, tapes and newspapers are kept for people to read, study or borrow. In my opinion, there is no limit to ban books in the library. However, the librarians must separate every section. On the other hand, if the government says that certain books are harmful for certain people, the librarians should make signs on those books. Thus, people can choose the right books to read. I think newspapers should not be limited because newspapers tell us what is new, and what is going on. If some news is harmful for young people, the parents have the right to teach and explain to their children. Moreover, newspapers are helpful for the young people. For example, if a newspaper publishes an article about a sexual harassment case, the young people would get the information from that. Thus, the young people will pay attention to that situation. Therefore, the libraries and newspapers should not be limited. Binhua Mei ( Rain) The “Extra Sparkly Lens” Newsletter Page 7 of 8 Note: Any comments or questions for the newsletter please send them to hwceslnewsletter@yahoo.com A Few decades ago in Korea, there were banned books by the government. Korea has been separated into the North and South since the 1945. The North has a communist government, and the South is a republic. Thus, most banned books were related to communist ideology. Nevertheless, people got the books and spread them among universities, and no one could stop it. Some students brought books when they came back after their study abroad programs. They used those books' pages as wrapping paper of dish to pass the customs at the airport. At last, the government gave up censorship on books. On the other hand, in Harold Washington College library, there is a reference book section behind the librarian reception desk. However, we cannot go in to search or find a book. Only when we ask a book, librarians go in there and get us the book. It is so uncomfortable and unfair. We do not know which book we need before we search, and searching on the computer is complicated. As a result, the important books for the semester are very likely to sleep untouched in the deep place for that semester. Furthermore, if the government decides to not provide that, it is hard to say that we have freedom. Nobodycan be sure that their government is right. Even though it is, we can not hand over our judgment to others. We should be able to access to the information that we want. Heaju Pomerleau Freedom is autonomy. Without autonomy, freedom is weapon. In fact, freedom of press is a good way to propagate news and knowledge. Although freedom means you can do whatever you want, it should be under certain limitations. If freedom is used in improper ways, it’ll become an indirect way to hurt somebody. For example, if the news in newspapers is false, or the news will impinge on someone’s privacy, this will have a damaging negative effect on someone’s image or reputation. In my opinion, books in elementary or high school libraries are definitely different from public libraries. In elementary or high school, students’ thinking ability just reaches a certain level. They can’t analyze or appreciate certain kind of literatures or masterpieces. Their thinking is naive and simple. Therefore, school should readjust the books, which are suitable for these ages and reselect the books according students’ mental level. In addition, sexual or violent related books should be totally banned from school libraries. These kinds of books will influence teenagers’ thinking and cause society problems. In public libraries, it will be more open to everyone except who are under 18. Sexual or violent related books should be banned from public libraries except if those sexual or violent books have educational elements. It doesn’t matter whether it is school libraries or public libraries, these are the places where provide knowledge to everyone. In my opinion, freedom of the press comes into existence under certain limitations. If freedom of press crosses the line, it will be an invisible weapon turning society into chaos and confusion. Freedom is autonomy; autonomy has freedom.
