The Progressive Tense
Function: Action currently in progress.
Characteristics:
Is a compound tense.
Are formed by using the
o ESTAR (auxiliary verb) + GERUND (main verb, actual action)
The GERUND has one (1) form depending on the ending
The ESTAR takes on all six forms, in any tense.
Forming the Gerund
-AR verbs ex. HABLAR →
HABLAR – (AR) + ando = hablando
Instead of the main verb having six different endings it just has one. When translated
to English it describes the –ING action.
HABLANDO is the gerund and the progressive is as follows:
ESTAR + gerund = progressive
Yo estoy hablando.
→
Tú estás hablando.
→
Él o Ella está hablando. →
Ud. está hablando
→
Nosotros estamos hablando. →
Vosotros estáis hablando. →
Ellos o Ellas están hablando. →
Uds. están hablando.

I am talking.

The gerund changes with the –ER & -IR verbs.
ER verbs COMER (to eat) →
COMER – (ER) + iendo = comiendo
o Estoy comiendo. I am eating.
IR verbs VIVIR (to live) →
VIVIR – (IR) + iendo = viviendo
o Estoy viviendo. I am living.
*There are a few irregular GERUND forms.
