Avarietyof2Ddesignconceptsandtoolsareintroducedtofostervisualliteracy,anddeepenappreciationoftheroleof
designinartandculture.Studentscreateprojectsthatexploreelementsandprincipalsofdesign,includingline,shape,
space,value,sequenceandcolor,whiledevelopingfluencyinthehandlingofmedia,andanincreasedawarenessof
craftsmanship.Lecturesandcritiquescultivateverbalcommunicationskillstofosterafacilitywithlanguageofartand
design,andbasiccomputerskillsareintroducedinthecreationofanonlineportfolio.ClassHours:4

Effortandclassproductivityaredefinedasstayingcurrentwiththecoursesite,emailsandtextmessages,
andrefrainingfromthesenegativeclassbehaviors:sleepinginclass,takinglongerbreaks,doingnon-relevant
work,havingnon-relatedparallelconversations,textingordaydreaminginclass.
EverytimethisoccursIwillletyouknowanddeducthalf(0.5)pointfromyourfinalgrade.Youcanloseupto
twenty(20)pointsonnegativeeffortandproductivity.

Participationisareflectionofyourclassparticipationincritiques,discussionsandpresentations.
Wewillholdacritiqueatthebeginningofclasseachtimeaprojectisdue.Projectsmustbehungonthe
critiquewallbythebeginningofclass;ifyouarelatearrivinginclass,yourprojectislate.Everyonewillshow
his/herworktotheclassfordiscussion.Everyonemustengageinthesediscussions;itisimportanttolearn
thevocabularyofdesignandspeakcomfortablyabouttheworkpresented.Bepreparedtospeakbriefly
aboutyourpiece,whatissuccessfulandwhatisnot.Hangingyourworkinfrontofyourpeerscanbea
vulnerable,butveryfruitfulexperience.Alwaysrememberthatwelearnjustasmuchfromourfailuresas
fromourachievements–ifnotmore!
Thediscussionsandpresentationswillfocusontheformalconcernsandtechniquesthatwehavelearnedin
class.Itshouldbeapparentthattime,effort,andthoughtwentintoeachofyourdesigns.
Eachclasscritique,discussionorpresentationthatyouarenotreadytoparticipatereducesyourgradeby
one(1)point.Youcanloseuptotwenty(20)pointsonnegativeparticipation.
Youshouldnotifyyourinstructorofanyextenuatingcircumstancesthatmayaffectyourperformance,
