Physiological research incorporates a range of biological levels of organization and to fully understand how organisms work, physiologists must effectively integrate molecular, cellular, tissues, organs and organismal levels. The APS, representing 10,000+ members, advances the field of physiology though publication of high quality journals, organization and funding of scientific conferences, career development of undergraduate, graduate and professional students, increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in science, and advancing physiology education at all levels. I believe the primary role of the President is to be a voice that advocates for the central role physiological research plays both in advancing our understanding of the natural world, and its essential contributions to improving human health. APS is headquartered on the Beaumont Campus in Bethesda, on the doorsteps of various federal agencies (NIH, NSF, DOE, DOD etc) and decision makers on Capital Hill. Therefore it provides an ideal launching pad for communicating the important role of fundamental and applied physiological research. I am honored to be on the ballot, and I am motivated to use my broad training in physiology to actively represent the field of physiology.
