Federal Government’s Green Initiative on Travel
I
n October 2009, President Obama
signed Executive Order
13514
to establish an integrated strategy
toward sustainability in the federal
government and to make reduction
of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions a
priority for federal agencies. EO 13514
requires agencies to ― measure,
report and reduce their GHG emissions
from direct and indirect activities. The
Council on Environmental Quality has
issued draft guidance on how federal
agencies should report emissions on
business air and ground travel.
Federal agencies may coordinate
with the U.S. General Services
Administration (GSA) to report data
“
into the GSA Travel MIS tool or with
their travel agent to obtain employee
air travel data through other means.
For ground business travel (rail,
bus, rental vehicle), agencies should
coordinate with their travel agents and
accounting departments to determine
data availability.

My wife and I worked with Sharralyn at the Fort Leavenworth office recently to
arrange our travel to Guam.
In working with her, we had to make several changes to the itinerary due to an
[administrative] error in my orders. Nonetheless, she was always courteous,
accommodating and gracious in helping us sort through the myriad [of] flights to
find the best one for us.
Sharralyn is a model example for customer relations and an outstanding asset for
your business.

Did You Know
When using the Defense Travel
System (DTS), you should
always book your air segments
first, then your car rentals. That
way the pick-up time for the
car will be correct. If you book
the car first, the pick-up time
will default to 9 a.m., and your
flight might not arrive until 2
p.m. Car companies only have
to hold the reservation for 2
hours past the pick-up time on
the itinerary. Practice this tip to
ensure your ride
is waiting.
Terminal Amenities Take Off
L
ive music, “chill” zones, themed
parties and more line the list of
new airport amenities to entertain the
weary traveler. Why sit and twiddle
your thumbs or slave away on your
laptop when you could enjoy a bit of
fun before heading down the tarmac?
Philadelphia International Airport has
opened a “Passenger Chillin’ Zone”
complete with sofas, chairs and
foliage, free wireless Internet access
and multiple other “Just Plane Fun”
activities. Themed parties, including
Havana Nights, happen each weekend
at the Miami International Airport.
LAX re-opened its outdoor observation
deck on top of the landmark Theme
Building with free telescopes. Live
performances abound at the San
Francisco International Airport during
its summer season of “You are Hear”
live music series.

Cost Saving Tip
Let Your Hotel Pick-up the Tab
Most travel essentials (razor, tooth brush, toothpaste, soap, hair
dryer, etc.) are provided free of charge at your hotel. Instead of
packing and paying for these items, just request them at check-in!
And, if your hotel offers complimentary breakfast, grab an extra
muffin or piece of fruit for a mid-morning or afternoon snack.

According to a Bundle.com
report, the average American
household spent $1,571 on
travel (including airfare, rental
cars, hotel stays, etc.) in 2009.
However,
residents
of
Arlington, Va., spent more than
twice the national average with
$3,534 going to travel. Being a
Washington, D.C., suburb with
a large concentration of federal
employees,
government
contractors and lobbyists, could
explain why they’re always on
the go.
Top 5 Highest Spending Cities
1. Arlington, VA - $3,534
2. San Francisco, CA - $3,460
3. Washington, DC - $3,409
4. Scottsdale, AZ - $3,372
5. New York, NY - $3,274
