Angry women scare men, she says, laughing. “Crazy women, forget it.” “It’s OK if you play crazy or complicated,’’ she continues, drawing “complicated’’ out into many syllables. “You can play beautiful but dangerous. You can even play gross Hollywood loves it. “Rambling Rose was a complete nympho,’’ Dern says, referring to her Oscarnominated title role in the 1991 film, “and, to this day, the boys tell me, ‘She was so troubled, but for some reason we just love her.’’’ Dern is speaking by telephone from her Los Angeles home, and the topic of difficult women has come up because of her critically acclaimed performance in Enlightened, now in its second season on HBO. She plays Amy Jellicoe, a struggling corporate drone who is – to put it mildly – not the kind of woman you usually see on television. “My character Amy on Enlightened loses it in the first episode,’’ Dern says. “I’ve heard, ‘How do you feel playing such an angry person?’ I’ve realised what a stigma anger is in a female character.’’ The show, created by Dern and actorwriter Mike White, who also stars as her co-worker Tyler, has impressed critics and developed a passionate fan base. “I expected to hear from women, which is lovely,’’ the 46-year-old actress says. “But now, wherever I go, there is somebody who wants to talk about the show.’’ A significant number of them are men, she says, a point driven home to her on a recent visit to a Los Angeles restaurant. “All of a sudden the chef and his staff, comprised of all men, came out of the back to tell me that they were obsessed Laura Dern as Amy in a scene from Enlightened. Enlightened fans,’’ Dern recalls. “These guys ranged in age from 25 to 55. They were white, black and Hispanic, a real mix. Some of the men told me, ‘I’m Amy.’ They argued about it, insisting, ‘No, I’m Amy!’ Then they began to tell me about their frustrations with the American way of life. “The best compliment I heard was, ‘I’m seeing a part of myself on this show, the part that I’m afraid to express.’’’ When viewers first met Amy, she was an executive who had experienced a workplace wipeout and been relegated to the basement of her large corporation, where the “losers” toil in menial jobs in lieu of firing. Divorced from a drug-ad-dict husband named Levi (Luke Wilson), Amy was broke and had been forced to move back in with her quietly, brutally judgmental mother, played by Dern’s real-life mother, Diane Ladd. Amy didn’t simply get angry, though, but became determined to find some way to change the world. Her first step: Bring down the company that has abused her. “You go, ‘She’s crazy. She thinks she will change her ex-husband and her mother and this company,’’’ Dern says. “You think, ‘She’s nuts.’ “Our love letter to the fans is that Amy’s anger is also her greatest gift,’’ she continues. “Her deepest flaw has been harnessed this season. She’s using that anger to change her little piece of the world.’’ How has Amy become so, dare we say, enlightened? “We are our flaws and our damages,’’ Dern says. “Those can turn out to be our great qualities. What’s also true in life and on this show is that it takes emotion-al growth to harness certain emotions and shape them in a way that will cause real, productive change.’’ She’s happy to give the bulk of the credit for the show’s success to White. “Mike is such a brilliant writer,’’ she says. “It’s odd to speak for him, but this show is our baby. I feel like a parent speaking about it. “From its inception, Mike and I both knew where Amy would go,’’ Dern continues. “His vision as a writer always included three different aspects of Amy’s life played over three seasons. The first COVER STORY Amy didn’t simply get angry, though, but became determined to find some way to change the world. Her first step: Bring down the company that has abused her season was to see who Amy is in life. This season is about Amy becoming a whistle-blower. The next season will be the most interesting of all. If we get a Season 3, we’re really interested in what happens when someone like Amy is given this sort of platform as a whistleblower. What is the next step?’’ Will the show get that third season? She hopes so, though HBO has yet to make an announcement either way. Regardless, Enlightened seems to have struck a chord for its fans that clicks with this time and place. “We’ve been at war for over 10 years, there are young children shot at school,’’ Dern says. “As people, we force ourselves not to be like Amy and feel it all too deeply. But there is a part of us that is her. We feel the pain. We just try to sur-vive by numbing that part of ourselves that wants to scream the Network (1976) line, ‘I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!’ “The company in this show is sleep-ing,’’ she says. “They don’t think one worker will make a difference. As we know, that’s not the case. The great vigi-lantes in our day are the whistleblowers in corporate America. It just takes that one person to say, ‘Wait, BP did what? Nobody is saying anything? I’ll say some-thing!’’’ Monday, March 4, 2013 A still from the film Enlightened. The daughter of Diane Ladd and actor Bruce Dern, Laura Dern grew up around the movie industry. A tall, skinny and painfully shy girl, she found herself at nine by studying acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York. After childhood cameos in her mother’s films White Lightning (1973) and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), she made her film debut in the Jodie Foster film Foxes (1980), and scored her break-through as a blind girl who becomes friends with a deformed boy in Mask (1985). Her subsequent movies have in-cluded Smooth Talk (1985), Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), Rambling Rose, Jurassic Park (1993), October Sky (1999), I Am Sam (2001) and The Mas-ter (2012). On the home front, Dern and her exhusband, musician Ben Harper, are the parents of 11-year-old Ellery and 8-yearold Jaya. She remains very close to her mother, who raised her after her parents split in 1969. Enlightened is hardly their first time as co-stars: Mother and daughter got matching Oscar nominations for Rambling Rose, and Ladd previously has played the mother of Dern’s character in White Lightning, Wild at Heart, Citi-zen Ruth (1996) and Daddy and Them (2001). Dern feels, however, that En-- lightened is their best mutual work. “Working with my mom has been amazing,’’ she says. “This season has been one of subtle-but-beautiful evolu-tion in her character. There are very poignant moments between Amy and her mom. To see her reach out and be there for her daughter is so beautiful, because she plays a woman who clearly isn’t capable of showing emotion.’’ In real life, Dern adds, Ladd is a read-ily emotional mother has been warmly supportive of her career from its outset. She even let her 12-year-old daughter star in Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabu-lous Stains (1982), a punk-rock musical that would have made most mothers think twice. “In that movie my hair is half black and half white,’’ Dern says with a whoop-ing laugh. “I starred in that movie with two members of the Sex Pistols. I left eighth grade looking like Alice in Won-derland and came back with half-shaved hair. “It was my coming of age experi-ence,’’ she says, still laughing. “Amaz-ingly, I felt even more innocent after that experience.’’ Dern was especially glad to have made “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabu-lous Stains’’ for another reason. “I made one of my best friends when I was 12 and she was 13,’’ she says. “It was Diane Lane, who made that movie with me. All these years later, I’m en-couraged. It’s so lucky we have such amazing actresses to look up to who never shy away from the complications of being female. Diane is one of those women.’’ Like Lane, Dern is defying the Holly-wood truism that it’s tough to find good roles for women past 40. “A lot of women are proving that working as an actress when you’re over 40 is actually legal in Hollywood,’’ she says. “And you can do this outside of France, where it has always been legal even to work over 60. “Thanks to cable TV, there is a great tribe of ladies who are getting this crazy good work now,’’ Dern says. “We’re still playing wonderfully complicated women, and there isn’t an ingenue in the group. We’re complicated women playing com-plicated women. It’s so delicious.’’ HOLLYWOOD Monday, March 4, 2013 Donald Trump returns to the Apprentice boardroom He presided in a mood-lit stagecraft boardroom where celebrity subjects addressed him as “Mr Trump” and shrank at that dismissive flick of his wrist and dreaded catchphrase, “You’re fired.” Donald Trump AP T HERE is something Donald Trump says he doesn’t know. Trump has welcomed a reporter to his 26th-floor corner office in Trump Tower to talk about All-Star Celebrity Apprentice. And here in person, this one-of-a-kind TV star, billion-aire businessman, ubiquitous brand mogul and media maestro strikes a softer pose than he has typically practiced in his decades on public display. Relaxed behind a broad desk whose mir-ror sheen is mostly hidden by stacks of paper that suggest work is actually done there, Trump is pleasant, even chummy, with a my-time-is-your-time easiness greeting his guest. He even contradicts his status as a legen-dary know-it-all with this surprising admis-sion: There’s a corner of the universe he doesn’t understand. The ratings woes of NBC, which airs his show, are on Trump’s mind at the moment, and as he hastens to voice confidence in the network’s powers-that-be (“They will abso-lutely get it right”), he marvels at the myster-ies of the entertainment world. “If I buy a great piece of real estate and do the right building, I’m really gonna have a success,” he says. “It may be more successful or less successful, but you can sort of predict how it’s gonna do. But show business is like trial and error! It’s amazing!” He loves to recall the iffy prospects for The Apprentice when it debuted in January 2004. With show biz, he declares, “You never know what’s gonna happen.” Except, of course, when you do. “I do have an instinct,” he confides. “Oftentimes, I’ll see shows go on and I’ll say, ‘That show will never make it,’ and I’m always right. And I understand talent. Does anybody ask me? No. But if they did, I would be doing them a big service. I know what people want.” So maybe he does know it all. In any case, lots of people wanted The Apprentice. In its first season, it averaged nearly 21 mil-lion viewers each week. And it gave Trump a signature TV plat-form that clinched his image as corporate royalty. He presided in a mood-lit stagecraft boardroom where celebrity subjects ad-dressed him as “Mr. Trump” and shrank at that dismissive flick of his wrist and dreaded catchphrase, “You’re fired.” The two-hour premiere of All-Star Celeb-rity Apprentice (Sunday at 9 pm EST) starts by rallying its 14 veteran contenders in the even more evocative setting of the 2,000- year-old Egyptian Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There, grandly, Trump receives such returning players as Gary Busey, Stephen Baldwin, LaToya Jackson and reality mean queen Omarosa. Soon, teammates are chosen by team leaders Bret Michaels and Trace Adkins. Their first assignment: concoct a winning recipe for meatballs, then sell more of them than the rival team. This is the 13th edition of the Apprentice franchise, which has now slipped to less than one-third its original viewership, ac-cording to Nielsen Co figures. But even an audience matching last season’s 6.26 million viewers would be pleasant news for NBC, which has recently fallen to fifth place in prime time, behind even Spanish-language Univision. “I could probably do another show when I don’t enjoy The Apprentice anymore,” says the 66-year-old Trump, mulling his TV future. “I have been asked by virtually every network on television to do a show for them. But there’s something to sticking with what you have: This is a good formula. It works.” Years before The Apprentice, Trump had hit on a winning formula for himself: Super-charge his business success with relentless self-promotion, putting a human face on the capitalist system, and embedding his per-sona in a feedback loop of performance and fame. Since then, he has ruled as America’s larger-than-life tycoon and its patron saint of material success. Which raises the ques-tion: Does he play a souped-up version of himself for his audience as Donald Trump, a character bigger and broader than its reallife inspiration? He laughs, flashing something like a yougot-me smile. “Perhaps,” he replies. “Not consciously. But perhaps I do. Perhaps I do.” It began as early as 1987, when his first book, Trump: The Art of the Deal, became a huge best-seller. And even without a regular showcase, he was no stranger to TV. For instance, in the span of just 10 days in May 1997, Trump not only was seen on his Miss Uni-verse Pageant telecast on CBS, but also made sitcom cameo appearances as himself on NBC’s Suddenly Susan and ABC’s Drew Carey Show. Meanwhile, as a frequent talk-show guest then (as now), he publicised his projects and pushed his brand. “I’ll be on that show for 20 or 30 or 60 minutes, and it costs me nothing,” he notes. “When you have an opportunity for promotion, take it! It’s free.” HOLLYWOOD Schwarzenegger flexes muscles again in bodybuilding world REUTERS A RNOLD Schwarzenegger is going back to his bodybuilding roots. The action movie star turned poli-tician will become group executive editor for the magazines Flex, and Muscle & Fitness, writing monthly columns in the publications and their online websites, American Media said on Friday. The Terminator star, who began his Hollywood career as a bodybuilder and went on to win five Mr Universe titles, held the same position at the magazines before he was elected California gover-nor in 2003. “Bodybuilding has always been part of my life, and I know Muscle & Fitness and Flex will continue to motivate others - as it did me - to lift weights and lead a healthy lifestyle (and) promote the sport of bodybuilding,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement. Schwarzenegger’s relationship with the two magazines goes back to 1968, when he was just 21, and he has ap-peared on their covers more than 60 times. Spelling angry over false divorce news IANS A CTRESS Tori Spelling is angry at a publication for reporting false news of her divorce, which has upset her son Liam. Spelling wrote a letter to Star magazine after it carried a news of Spelling’s divorce with husband Dean McDermott on its cover page. The magazine had a picture of the couple with their four children, with a line which read: “Who will get the kids?”, reports dailystar. co.uk. Spelling is furious at the magazine’s bosses and wrote to them: “My son Liam is turning six in a couple (of) weeks. His proudest achievement so far in his young life is that he is learning to read... That pride turned to sorrow thanks to Star magazine. “He was asking, ‘Why is some-one getting us?? Where are you and Dad going?’ He was anxiously biting his lower lip and his big blue eyes were filled with tears. My heart sank....” Spelling is married to Mc-Dermott for past six years and says she is blessed to have him as his husband. “I’m so blessed to have him (McDermott) as my partner in life and love and he is the best father to our four children. I’m aware that all that matters is that we know our truth... Dean and I will continue to love each other and our babies and be Tori Spelling grateful for the lives we have,” she wrote. Charlize Theron Monday, March 4, 2013 BOLLYWOOD Director Kapil Sharma’s film derives some succour and marginal strength from urbane dia-logues that the characters throw at one another at work and in parties Film: Rating: Director: Starring: I Me Aur Main ★★★ Kapil Sharma John Abraham, Chitrangda Singh, Prachi Desai, Raima Sen and Mini Mathur NOW PLAYING IN DOHA THEATRES I Me Aur Main Romcom with potential let down by characters IANS W HAT do you with a selfobsessed guy like Ishaan who shoulders no respon-sibility except that to his iron-board torso and matinee-idol posturings, who takes everyone from mom, sis and girlfriend to success, friendship and karma for granted? John Abraham plays the kind of narcissist whose life is just waiting to fall apart. It does, soon enough leaving him... well, high and not quite dry. For much of its economical play-ing-time, I Me Aur Main glides along innocuously in an urbane corporotised haze where women are allowed to be successful alongside men, though that success comes with a price. Hence to no one’s surprise, Anushka (Chitrangda) locks Ishaan (John) out of her home and life. Ishaan doesn’t waste a moment in moving into a new apart-ment where he begins anew with a flirty flighty neighbour Gauri (Prachi Desai). This is a dangerously thin ice for a desi romcom to tread on. The principal characters do not aspire to any higher ground of existence beyond what they are allotted by writers. Director Kapil Sharma’s film derives some succour and marginal strength from urbane dialogues that the charac-ters throw at one another at work and in parties. Indeed the most interesting charac-ter to be obtained in this romp-com is that of Ishaan’s frosty saree-clad, selfstyled diva boss Beena (Raima Sen) who takes over the business and has poor Ishaan by his balls. The ‘b’ word for such pushy sarcastic women is not discounted. It is interesting to see John play a complete jerk, the kind you wouldn’t wish on your sister or daughter. Unfor-tunately girls of a certain age do fall for attractive garbage. John plays the trashy Ishaan with-out reservation. A jerk, he is till a point in the plot where you wonder how this self-serving ass will finally get his come-uppance. The payback comes in unexpected ways. The way an executive lifestyle and its sterile relationships are kept afloat in the film are proof of intelligent minds energising this endeavour which strives to titillate burt gradually falls into the terrain of torpidity with no hope of a rescue. John as the commitment-phobic cad skims over the smooth surface unable to nail the character beyond the occasional smirk and the constant gleam in the eye. His character evolves gradually, though, with fatherhood fuelling a sud-den change of heart that would have been more convincing had Ishaan’s growth from self-obsession to caring had been charted with more strokes of bold colours. Dwelling in the domain of surfacelevel emotions, I Me Aur Main tickles our fancy in just that proportion where we do not a walk away with a sense of betrayal. John works hard to give character to his amoral character. His mumbling monologue at the end with his newlyborn is touching. Chitrangda smoulders with her bri-dled sex appeal exuding oomph without letting any of it spill over. Prachi literally plays the girl next-door with a neighbourly warmth that wraps around John like a cosy shawl in winter. Television anchor Mini Mathur and Raima Sen provide colour and character to a script that needed more motivation and a larger sense of responsibility in showing its protagonist go from irre-sponsible to the committed. I Me Aur Main is an inoffensive, sweet, tender and cute rom-com about a selfish jerk and the two lovely ladies who come into his life. With an endearing threesome of principal actors who aren’t afraid to play flawed, this film should have left us floored. Instead it just leaves us pleasantly underwhelmed. That seems to have been Soha Ali Khan’s underlying statement when at a public event, promoting her new film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Re-turns, she made her displeasure clear at her royalty references being relentlessly rustled up. Director Tigmanshu Dhulia said at the event that he chose Soha to play a princess in his film as she looked every inch the royalty in royal finery. To this, the sharp-tongued Soha retorted: “Oh yes, I even sleep in royal clothes.” Explaining her snappy re-sponse, Soha said: “It is true. When I was asked if I was comfort-able playing my character because of my royal background, I did re-spond that way. “But I was being facetious in merely stating how ‘unroyal’ my dress sense is. As a matter of fact, I am so bohe-- mian in my dress code that only recently have I started wearing shoes instead of chappals. So I was actually making fun of myself!” Having said this, Soha adds she is very proud of her royal antecedents. “I embrace my identity. It is a privi-lege to come from the background that I do. And it is this background that put me in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s mind for my part as the princess in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. I am grateful for it,” said the daughter of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who was nawab of Bhopal until 1971, when India abolished royal en-titlements. Monday, March 4, 2013 LIFESTYLE What goes into a $13,000 sofa? Gold bricks? NYT SYNDICATE D OES anyone get excited about buying a couch? I can’t say the prospect awakens the impassioned consumer in me. I’ve overreached on chairs, bedding and Scandinavian flatware that sits in my cupboard like a melancholy reminder of all the dinner parties I don’t have, but never have I been tempted to drop big money on a couch. When I’m invited to other people’s homes, their sofas don’t stoke envy. More often, my response is to plop down, scatter a few crumbs and move on. For years, I surveyed my living room from a Danish modern knockoff, long and low as a boat, which I picked up for $100 at a used-furniture store. When one of the legs broke, I tucked some books underneath and favoured the good side. In the fleet of living-room furniture, they are family vehicles. Why spend a fortune on a Caravan? Now that I need a new couch to replace the latest one I characteristically bought cheaply and treated poorly, I find myself rethinking my approach. Thinking of sofas as interchangeable is wrongheaded, apparently. Magnus Breitling, director of product manage-ment for chair-maker Emeco and former-ly with Vitra, a Swiss furniture company, set me straight on the subject of luxury sofas. “There’s a lot of intelligence that goes into the product, not just in construction but in sourcing,” Breitling said. “The ef-fort and time is much higher than with a typical Macy’s or Ikea couch.” But then again, so is the price. One reason manu-facturers like Designer Couch? Ligne Roset and Vitra charge significantly more is the involvement of a top designer, Breitling said. Do I really want to spend an extra $5,000 to underwrite someone’s creative process? I might fall victim to designer names with clothes but not sofas. For me, a more persuasive argument would be superior construction. Like many men, I am susceptible to the idea of things made by craftspeople using ar-cane tools and labour-intensive practices dating back to the Middle Ages. Kayel De Angelis of New York upholsterer De Angelis, which was started more than 60 years ago by De Angelis’ grandfather Guido, is one such craftsman. To prove it, he began by tossing around woodworking terms I didn’t understand, such as mor-tise and tenon. In a budget couch, De Angelis said, “you could see plywood frames that are stapled together, with foam rubber in-side. Frames made in that way – give it a year or a little longer, and the arm might be loose.” The frame of a custom or high-end sofa by a manufacturer like Baker, he added, is usually a hardwood like ash or maple held together with glue and dowels or tongue-and-groove joints. “The joint is just as strong as, or stronger than, the wood itself,” he said. “And, then, the multiple layers of the upholstery won’t degrade the way foam rubber will.” Brei-tling pointed to the cushions and outer layer as another point of difference. “The life cycle of the fabric or leather is much longer with an expensive couch,” he said. “Foam gets compressed and releases, and with time, the foam is wear-ing out.” But assuming I’m willing to invest in a really well-made sofa, how do I know whether I am actually getting my $10,000 worth – or if I am paying $2,000 for materials and construction and $8,000 for marketing and cool Euro design? Annie Elliott, an interior designer in Washington with strong opinions on the subject, believes a five-figure couch isn’t just hype. “Unlike fashion, where you pay for style and name but not necessarily con-struction, with a sofa I think you are paying for quality,” Elliott said. “You’re getting things like feather and down cushions as opposed to foam.” But you can buy a perfectly fine sofa, Elliott said, with a solid wood frame and feather-wrapped foam cushions, for as little as $1,500 if you find a deal. “Now, when you get below $1,000, that’s where I think you have to be care-ful,” Elliott said, because manufacturers are probably cutting corners to keep the price down. On a recent afternoon, with a better understanding of couch design and a willingness to spend more than $100, I visited a few Manhattan furniture stores. In our earlier conversation, Breitling had cited Poltrona Frau as a company that makes high-end sofas that last for decades. I paid a visit to the showroom in SoHo and caught sight of one with metal legs and an elegantly simple form, priced at $13,000. I called Roberto Archetti, the com-pany’s brand director in Italy, and asked skeptically what goes into a $13,000 sofa. Gold bricks? Calmly, Archetti began to pummel me with the sofa’s luxury features: the seat is solid beechwood; the feathers in the cushions are applied by hand; the fullgrain leather is the highest quality and dyed through, so a surface scratch won’t reveal the white lining. And to achieve “maximum comfort,” Archetti said, the John-John went through several proto-types. He wasn’t done yet: The foam is formed by hand. The cows that provide the leather are kindly treated. As he spoke, I began to wonder whether more R&D had gone into the John-John than the Boeing Dreamliner. When I hung up, I was overwhelmed but still uncertain that a sofa was worth that kind of investment. Wouldn’t I be terrified to sit down on it? After my conversation with Breitling, I had been more convinced, maybe because he spoke in automotive terms I could relate to. The Kia might be cheaper, he had pointed out, but in 20 to 30 years the Porsche is the car that will still be turning heads on the road. Taking a swipe at our disposable cul-ture, he added: “They say only rich people can afford to buy cheap stuff.” FOOD Monday, March 4, 2013 Vietnamese shrimp, from cane to cake NYT SYNDICATE T After the shrimp is gone, you can gnaw on the sugar cane, sucking the sweet, watery juice as a palate cleanser HE hardest part about mak-ing Vietnamese shrimp on sugar cane, called chao tom, is finding the sugar cane. The shrimp part is easy: Whirl together raw shrimp and season-ings in the food processor until you get a paste (or mousse, as some recipes euphemistically call the thick mix), then pat it on pieces of sugar cane and steam it before grilling or frying. I’ve eaten the dish many times in Vi-etnamese restaurants, where it’s served as an appetiser with lettuce leaves for wrapping and a piquant nuoc cham, a mixture of fish sauce and lime juice, for dipping. After the shrimp is gone, you can gnaw on the sugar cane, sucking the sweet, watery juice as a palate cleanser. The only thing that stopped me from authentically recreating the dish is the lack of easy access to sugar cane. True, specialty and ethnic markets far away from my house sell it. In the summer, I can probably buy some from the guy selling tropical fruit out of the back of a van near the Brooklyn Queens Express-way. (Although since I’m usually in a rush, I’ve yet to actually pull over and do so. But I will, I promise, as soon as the weather warms up.) In the meantime, I’ve contented myself with a makeshift version, patting the shrimp paste into cakes and pan-frying them until the edges are crisp and golden. Although traditional recipes keep the shrimp seasonings to a minimum (making up for it later with the nuoc cham), I like to spice up the paste. If my vegetable market has lemon grass, I’ll add it to the shrimp along with green chillies and scallions. Minced fresh herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley) and freshly grated ginger also work well. Or you can keep everything simple and go with garlic, salt and sugar as flavourings. It’s very adaptable. You can serve the cakes as an appetiser wrapped in lettuce leaves or herbs (large basil leaves are wonderful in summer). I usually fry them up for dinner, heaping them on rice noodles and dousing it all with nuoc cham. And lately I’ve been contemplating Vietnamese shrimp sliders, sandwich-ing the cakes with nuoc cham-flavoured mayonnaise on tiny brioche. Perhaps one day I’ll even wrap the paste around sugar cane sticks. Vietnamese-style crispy shrimp cakes recipe Time: 35 minutes Ingredients 1 pound shelled large shrimp, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup cornstarch, more for dusting 2 tablespoons minced lemon grass (tender inner stalk only) 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 serrano or jalapeno chilli peppers, seeded and minced 4 scallions, thinly sliced, white and light green part separated from dark green tops 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt 1/4 cup Asian fish sauce Finely grated zest of 1 lime 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (from 2 to 3 limes) Peanut oil, for frying Cooked rice noodles, optional, for serving 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, op-tional, for serving Method 1. In the bowl of a food processor, combine shrimp, cornstarch, lemon grass, garlic, chillies, white and light green scallion bottoms, 2 teaspoons sugar and the salt. Pulse until mixture forms a coarse paste. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together fish sauce, lime zest and juice, 1 table-spoon sugar and the dark green scal-lion tops. 3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Wet hands to keep shrimp paste from sticking. Form 2 tablespoons of shrimp mixture into a 1/2-inch-thick patty. Dust patty with cornstarch. Repeat with remaining bat-ter. Fry patties in batches until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Serve over rice noodles, if desired, drizzled with fish sauce mixture and strewn with cilantro. Thursday and Friday were the last chance for contestants to go through to the next stage and the first episode got off to a controversial start. Among the mediocre lot of hopefuls was one girl who really stood out. But the wan-nabe was not so much an unknown as a star already as it emerged that she had been a key member of reality show, It wasn’t just the contestants who were creating drama. Judge Wael Kfoury decided he’d had enough of fellow judge, Carole Samaha Asma’a Basetta. Still the judges weren’t put off and decided to put her through to the next round. Next up to stir trouble was Habeeba, a young hopeful from Morocco who stunned the judges with her voice. But before the singing even began, she claimed she was “better than Elissa” one of the team of judges on the show. Although she got through, it looks like Habeeba will be making waves with the sexy Lebanese songstress in the future! It wasn’t just the contestants who were creating drama. Judge Wael Kfoury decided he’d had enough of fel-- low Lebanese singer and judge, Carole Samaha, and stormed off set in anger. But it turned out the whole sulk was really a prank and he came back having fooled the rest of the celebs. Friday’s show was no less dramatic as viewers followed the story of Sameh al Sanadili, a wannabe from Syria who told judges he had been auditioning for talent shows for the past eight years. Turns out it was eighth time lucky for poor Sameh though, who was thrilled to go through to the next round. So-called ‘King of Romance’ and X Factor judge, Wael, was back to his old tricks, getting up on stage and pretend-ing to be one of the contestants to enter-tain the crowd during one of the breaks. But fellow star, Elissa, didn’t fair as well with the audience after she turned down Algerian contestant, Amel Etebi. The Lebanese songstress told the hope-ful that at least she had got to visit her home country, to which Amal replied: “I came to Lebanon. I didn’t come to see you.” Wael turned to his fellow judge to say “she hates you”. Let’s hope Elissa has more luck get-ting her contestants to like her in the second round! Hala Sidqi pulls full-blown diva strop and storms off set of new show mid-shoot TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK T HINGS went into full-blown cri-sis mode on the set of hit show Kalam Nawaim when Egyptian actress Hala Sidqi stormed off set in the middle of a shoot. Hala was attempting her first foray into the world of hosting for the MBC Egypt show when things when drasti-cally awry. Things were going far from swim-mingly for nervous Hala when she heard the assistant director making fun of her performance. The cruel comments sent the actress over the edge and she was soon throwing a star-quality diva strop. When the show’s director, Tareq Fahmi, refused to give in to Hala’s de-mands that he fire the assistant, Hala reportedly stormed off set and refused to be a part of the show. Unsurprisingly, rumour has it that Hala will be sticking to acting from now on. ARIES [mar 21 – apr 19] TAURUS [apr 20 – may 20] GEMINI [may 21 – jun 20] CANCER [jun 21 - jul 22] LEO [jul 23 – aug 22] VIRGO [aug 23 – sept 22] You have an overall feeling of good will toward others today, especially siblings, neighbors and relatives. Actually, this is a great way to start off your week. Enjoy! Dealings with groups could improve your financial situation in some way. Perhaps someone has a tip for you, or this person will introduce you to an important contact. Enjoy talking to others. You make a great impression on bosses, parents and VIPs today; however, don’t promise more than you can deliver. (Which you’ll be tempted to do.) Just rest on your laurels. Travel plans look exciting. Even matters related to publishing, the media, medicine, the law and higher education are promising. (Fingers crossed.) Others might be generous to you, or in turn, you might go overboard being generous to someone else. Be careful, because you could be playing with shared wealth. (You’ll have to answer to someone.) This is a wonderfully social day. Get out and schmooze with others. Take time to enjoy close friends and partners. LIBRA [sept 23 – oct 22] SCORPIO [oct 23 – nov 21] SAGITTARIUS [nov 22 – dec 21] CAPRICORN [dec 22 – jan 19] AQUARIUS [jan 20 – feb 18] Pisces [feb 19 – mar 20] There is a general feel-good attitude at work today, which makes everything easy for you and others. It’s a nice way to start off your week. Just don’t bite off more than you can chew. A playful, flirtatious day for Scorpios! This is a great day for sports events, the arts and working with children. (However, lucky Scorpios are on vacation.) Real-estate ventures might be favorable today. Nevertheless, be careful you don’t pay too much for something. You’ll also enjoy shopping for home and family today. It’s easy to be full of positive thoughts today, because you feel enthusiastic about life. You know that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train. (Whew.) This can be a favorable day for business and commerce, but it’s tricky. You could overestimate something. Nevertheless, the gods are with you. If shopping today, don’t buy unnecessary things, because you might be tempted to blow a wad. Guard against these impulses. Nevertheless, it’s a feel-good day, and you can have fun. Standing Ovation FIVE Atlantic City junior high students form a dance troupe to compete for a million-dollar prize in a national television music-video contest. Brittany (Kayla Jackson), Blaze (Pilar Martin), Maya (Na’jee Wilson), Cameron (Kayla Raparelli), and Tatiana (Alexis Biesiada) are best friends. Together they form ‘The 5 Ovations,’ a dance troupe that has what it takes to make the big time. But they’re not the only ones intent on becoming dance superstars, because their rivals “The Wiggies” have a flashy image and a reputation for using underhanded tactics to come out on top. Glamorous and wealthy, ambitious sisters Ziggy (London Clark), Zoey (Jeana Zettler), Zita (Ashley Cutrona), Twiggy (Devon Jordon), and Angel (Erika Corvette) are led by their scheming father, Mr Wiggs (Sal Dupree), whose sole priority is to win the competition at any cost. With the stage lit up and audience anticipation at an all-time high, the 5 Ovations step into the spotlight and prepare to dazzle.
