and anesthesia practice and the 3 single nucleotide polymorphisms
associated with opioid metabolism
• Describe the 2 types of genetic alterations resulting in altered drug
expression/metabolism and 2 ways in which pharmacogenomics
impact anesthesia care
• Define 2 types of implantable cardiac devices
• Relate evidence-based recommendations for anesthesia management of AICD devices
• Review & list pre-operative evaluation process (utilizing the ACC/
AHA algorithm) to determine which patients are adequately prepared
for anesthesia.
• Review pertinent pre-operative medications that should be initiated,
continued or discontinued prior to surgery.
• Review risk factors for emergence delirium and recognize the role
that PTSD neurophysiology plays in anesthesia delivery and emergence from anesthesia.
• Differentiate emergence delirium from other post-operative states
including dementia.
• Describe 4 unique physiologic changes associated with pregnancy
and Identify 2 common non-pregnancy surgeries encountered with a
pregnant patient
• Review evidence-based guidelines/recommendations to practice.
• Define 3 OB emergencies and review evidence-based guidelines to
anesthesia management of OB emergencies
• Review various off-site anesthesia settings (endo, cardiac EP, cardiac
cath. lab, radiology, radiation oncology) and list risks and anesthesia
delivery issues specific to each area.
• Recognize common pit-falls of providing off-site anesthesia and list
strategies for providing safe and timely anesthesia in the non-OR
setting.
• Review lateral vs. sitting position shoulders in neuro cases
• Describe prone positioning in multiple type procedures
• Recognize situations in the OR that require immediate intervention
and review diagnosis of critical OR incidents (basic TEE and other
measures).
• Review and discuss algorithms for treatment of cardiac arrest under
anesthesia and ACLS scenarios and their successful resolutions.
• List current indications for transfusion in the operative setting and
state risks and benefits of administration of red blood cells (RBCs),
fresh frozen plasma (FFP), cryoprecipitate and other blood components in the OR.
• Review blood typing and cross-matching, as well as steps for proper
and safe administration of blood products; Recognize research on
utilization of blood products in the OR
• Identify the 6 levels of evidence grading and 3 ways in which primary
research studies can be rapidly critiqued
• Describe 2 methods of practice change
• Define 3 pain pathways contributing to acute postoperative pain and
the physiology of non-opioid pain transmission cessation
• Articulate 2 non-opioid analgesics to treat acute postoperative pain
• Recognize the children and procedures that pose the highest risk for
outpatient and inpatient anesthesia.
• Evaluate new findings in pediatric anesthesia literature (including
pharmacology).
• List risks of anesthesia for the developing brain and Discuss strategies
for psychological preparation of children and parents for anesthesia.
• Review the pathophysiology of pediatric cardiac disease (tetralogy of
Fallot, transposition, ASD, VSD, hypoplastic left heart, aortic stenosis,
coarctation of the aorta).
• Discuss risks of anesthesia for the various pediatric cardiac disorders
and list features of genetic syndromes and anesthesia risks for each.
• Describe the stages of obesity
• Articulate & describe 2 physiologic changes associated with obesity
and 2 anesthesia considerations unique to the morbidly obese
patient
• Describe the use to mechanical devices and the CRNAs role of
understanding and the use of air way devices
• Review patient information and record keeping devices.

Patsy Langford, CRNA
For the last fourteen years, Mrs. Langford has practiced
as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Since 1991,
she has embraced and actively participated as a clinical
educator for Associate, Bachelors, and Master prepared
nursing students. She is an adjunct instructor of advanced
pathophysiology at the UAB Graduate School of Nursing.
She guest lectures for Universities and organizations. She
is a leader in organizing continuing education events in
the community. She is an active member and committee
member in the ALANA and AANA. She is an active member and State President of the GBAALNC and AALNC.
Patsy is a published author and serves as a peer reviewer
for professional peer reviewed journal, The Journal of
Legal Nurse Consulting.
Dru Riddle, CRNA, DNP
Assistant Professor of Professional Practice, Deputy Director,
TCU Center for Evidence Based Practice and Research - Texas
Christian University, School of Nurse Anesthesia Fort Worth,
Texas
Dru is an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in the
School of Nurse Anesthesia at Texas Christian University
in Fort Worth, Texas. He completed his nurse anesthesia
training at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia
and works clinically at Baylor All Saints Medical Center
in Fort Worth, Texas with a special interest in high-risk
OB anesthesia. Dru completed his DNP degree at Texas
Christian University and is actively working to complete his
PhD in Nursing and Pharmacogenomics at the Medical
University of South Carolina. He is actively involved in
evidence based practice research and has spoken internationally on research methodologies related to evidence
based practice.
Anne Sauri, CRNA, DNP
Staff Nurse Anesthetist, Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village, Illinois
Anne practices full-time as a nurse anesthetist, with experience in a wide variety of clinical settings. She received her
anesthesia training at the Cleveland Clinic and practiced
pediatric anesthesia there before relocating to Chicago.
She has worked at the University of Chicago Medical
Center and currently practices as a staff nurse
anesthetist at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in the
Chicago suburbs. Anne has undergraduate degrees in
nursing and political science, and attended law school
before completing her anesthesia training. In 2013, she
completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at the
University of Iowa with a doctoral thesis focusing on
utilizing simulation to improve pediatric anesthesia safety
in the community hospital setting. In addition to being
an experienced guest speaker at state-wide conferences,
Anne has served as a local facilitator for Johns Hopkins
Optimal Anesthesia Management educational meetings.
