What results are you achieving and what specific actions can you take to improve? Moving your performance from "good" to "great" is not a matter of just moving up the next rung of the ladder. It's not like moving next door -- it's more like moving to another country-- that's how big the gap can be. How do you bridge that chasm? Chip shows how incorporating more innovative or revolutionary change -- into everyday activities can lead to incredible change. For many, it may be taking ownership of their energy and vitality which will lead to performance improvements in their career. For others, it is taking ownership of their expertise and performance. Chip focuses on accountability as the key to owning both your performance and the desired outcome -- an accountability that takes responsibility – in spite of obstacles and without excuses or blame. Putting on the hat of personal responsibility is the place to start. Own It! inspires accountability, personal responsibility, trust in the system, and a long-term view of success. Even if you've settled for less in the past, or you have not gotten the results you want, you've got what it takes to make it happen. Small individual decisions can lead to a greater sense of ownership and big results; bigger changes can lead to innovation and revolutionary change. 9:30-9:45 am: Morning Break/Network/Bookstore Session #1: Concurrent Sessions 9:45 am-11:30am Steve Ostermiller: Scrum for Households: Healthy, Harmonious and Happy Scrum is often generalized as a software development framework, yet its applications are endless. Through Steve’s research and real-life applications of scrum, learn what it is and what it is not, and how families and individuals can use the essence of scrum to harness empiricism—transparency, inspection and adaptation — for improved health, harmony and happiness. 14 May 12th Agenda—Day 1 Cont. Paul Fields: Project Quality Management Project management and quality management always go together. A great project manager applies the tools of effective quality management to achieve project success by implementing a Quality Management System with Quality Planning, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Quality Appraisal and Quality Improvement. Likewise a high quality project manager can achieve high quality project results by: Understanding Quality in Project Management, Knowing the Paradigms of Quality, using the Tools of Quality Management, Analyzing Project Processes and Avoiding the Problem That Cause Poor Quality. John Stenbeck: Understanding Agile from a PMP’s Perspective! Exploding the myth that Agile is not in the PMBOK Have you been wondering, “What is the PM’s role in Agile?” or “Can Agile projects coexist in a Traditional environment?” or “What is the relationship between project-type and Agile tools?” Many PMP®s have been told, often by well-meaning but uninformed, “experts” that Agile is outside the PMBOK® Guide and there is no role for project managers. Those myths have no basis in fact! Fact #1 – Long before the Agile Manifesto the PMBOK® Guide included Rolling Wave Planning, Progressive Elaboration, and Decomposition… three core concepts Agile simply can’t live without. Fact #2 – The Agile focus on serving the customer, as practiced by many agilists, has a blind spot because it ignores the needs of the company – what we call the organizational customer – for budgeting and sophisticated scheduling tools that none of the Agile frameworks provide. Those two facts are the tip of the iceberg! Learn the whole truth during this powerful presentation. Murugappan Chettiar: Project Management Excellence thru Quantitative & Qualitative Balance Corporate culture showers praise on super heroes for saving the day, rarely are project managers extended the same appreciation for meeting or exceeding project objectives. The objective of this presentation is to raise the level of project management excellence and change the conversation from mundane back office responsibility to that of visibility and leadership. The conversation shift can be enabled when project managers move from the realm of management (i.e. quantitative aspects) to that of leadership (i.e. qualitative aspects). Foundation of quantitative aspects relating to project outputs and discipline of synthesizing information through graphs, trends in the historical context is set as the minimum threshold to be successful; practitioners are pushed to deal with qualitative aspects relating to project outcome dealing with emotions; external events are discussed. 15 May 12th Agenda—Day 1 Cont. Chip Eichelberger: Switch On Your Leadership In this interactive workshop build on and integrate the message from Chip’s opening address. You will walk away with clarity on your priorities, compelling vision and what limiting beliefs may be in your way. Leave with momentum and a code of conduct to live by each day. David Nelson: Five Crucial Conversations for Flawless Project Management Why do two-thirds of business initiatives with an improved formal project management system fail to achieve improved results? It turns out formal systems don’t account for one of the most pernicious problems draining project management of its power: silence. According to VitalSmarts’ national “Silence Fails” study of 2,200 projects, a failure to effectively communicate when faced with five common project issues is responsible for an astonishing 85% failure rate among business initiatives. In this engaging session, you will learn strategies to create a culture of candid dialogue, eradicate the five barriers to project success, and increase project performance by 50-70%. Joel Erickson & Liz Price: PMI-NUC Mentorship Workshop With over 50 years combined PMI experience these five business professionals have volunteered their time and energy to give back to the Northern Utah Chapter by serving as the Mentorship Committee. Under the direction of Director Joel Erickson the committee made up of Micah Grant, Byron Woertz, Mark Peterson and Natalie Moldover meet on a weekly basis to design and construct the new PMINUC Mentorship Program. They will present the foundations of the program to kick start this exciting new offering and even get you started on finding the perfect match! 11:30-12:00pm: Lunch & Networking 12:00-1:30pm: Lunch Keynote: Aileen Ellis: If Only OTHER People Came With a User’s Manual: Using Your Strengths to build Relationships and Propel Your Projects Forward Strong relationships lead to stronger more successful projects. In this very interactive keynote participants learn about themselves and others. We will learn what makes us feel good and how to make others feel good about themselves. We can use this knowledge to build stronger relationships to propel our projects forward. 16 May 12th Agenda—Day 1 Cont. 1:30-1:45pm Networking/Bookstore Workshop #1: Concurrent Sessions 1:45-5:30pm Full Afternoon Sessions Bryan Tew: Enterprise Agility Begins With Healthy Teams: How Healthy is YOUR Team? Every organization wants metrics, but which ones really matter? Which metrics can help you 'actually' get better and give you visibility into the health of your teams? If you are striving for business Agility and scaling tens or hundreds of teams, you need a consistent way to measure Team Health. In this session, we’ll explore what makes a healthy team and take a deep dive into the top 5 health metrics you should be looking at to know how your teams are performing. We’ll discover how you can create a continuous growth process where teams are showing measurable improvement quarter after quarter. John Lee: Rising Above It All: the Art and Science of Organizational Transformation The “Rising Above it All” lecture argues that the reason companies have such short life spans is because they do not understand how to effectively transform themselves. This lecture defines organizational transformation as “evolving to higher levels of sustained performance.” John Lee, the author of “Rising Above it All” has found that most companies are capable of evolving to a given level of performance, which he refers to as the 95 percent level. One of the problems in transformation is that the skill set needed to reach the 95 percent performance level is not the same skill set that is needed to rise above the 95 percent level of performance. Most organizations do not understand this phenomenon, and as a result companies will eventually go extinct as customer expectations rise above the 95 percent level performance levels. If you choose to attend this lecture be prepared to be inspired by the wonders of lifting your organization above it all. Mark Hehl: “If You can’t Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen”: Effective Conflict Management Techniques for the Project Manager “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”, is a common cliché in organizations. Every project has to some degree conflict between individuals / groups. In order to be successful the project manager needs to understand and manage conflict. This program provides time tested methods for reducing and managing conflict, resulting in high performing project teams along with reduced stress for the project manager. 17 May 12th Agenda—Day 1 Cont. Reed Shell: The Effective Project Manager in Action Peter Drucker wrote the effective Executive to help executives “get the right things done”. To assist the project manager become more effective, the concepts of: know thy time, focus on contribution, making strength productive, first things first, and effective decisions taught in the book will be covered. A companion book, The Effective Executive in Action was published later to allow the reader to put into action the concepts taught by Drucker by using questions and actions. This workshop will explore the concepts taught in The Effective Executive in an approach that will help the attendee create an action plan for a project manager to be more effective. Workshop #1 Concurrent Sessions 1:45-3:30pm Split Afternoon Sessions Jessica Soroky: The Missing Role in Scrum...Truths About Coaches Transformations are popping up left and right as companies see the value of embracing iterative and incremental project delivery. You may have heard it called an “Agile Transformation, going from waterfall to scrum.” These big organizational reforms are misunderstood, not easy, not pretty, and often times leave employees frustrated. So what went wrong? There is a role missing in all the scrum transformations…there is no such thing as a “scrum coach”, and the market confusion behind “agile coaches” is only contributing to the pain of transformations. In this session we explore the myths around the role of a coach and a few tools and techniques to help you and your teams break through the pain of a transformation and get to the important part – working differently, more effectively, and more innovatively. Richard Brenner: Ten Project management Fallacies: The Power of Avoiding Hazards Most of what we know about managing projects is useful and effective, but some of what we know "just ain't so." Identifying the fallacies of project management reduces risk and enhances your ability to complete projects successfully. Even more important, avoiding these traps can demonstrate the value and power of the project management profession in general, and your personal capabilities in particular. In this program we describe ten of these beliefs. There are almost certainly many more, but these ten are a good start. We'll explore the situations where these fallacies are most likely to expose projects to risk, and suggest techniques for avoiding them. 18 May 12th Agenda—Day 1 Cont. Workshop #1: Concurrent Sessions 3:45-5:30pm Split Afternoon Sessions John Stenbeck: The Five Time-Tested Keys to Estimating Successful Project Managers Can’t Live Without In Project Management’s realm nothing is more valuable than estimates that accurately reflect reality, motivate their fulfillment, and facilitate rigorous accountability. During this unique, concise presentation you will learn about the keys to complete mastery of this enduring PM challenge. Years of experience have shown that mastering the art and science of Estimating can help you avoid painful, tragic lessons... and accelerate your career! Don’t miss this interactive, comprehensive presentation. This powerful experience gives you solid training in Estimating as a “Science” as well as Estimating as an “Art” with loads of practical information on how to: * Reconcile and Align Objectives and Estimates * Handle Estimates that Exceed Budgets * Eliminate “Sand Bagging” * “Unlock the Unknown” with a quantifiably defendable Estimate * Create repeatedly desirable estimating results The information in this presentation is designed to be applied in your environment! Concise and to the point, it includes ample time for Q&A so you can get focused answers to your challenges! Mike Berry: More Than Scrum: Find Out Why the ACP is the Most Advanced Agile Framework Available The PMI-ACP is the Scrum Framework with a few accessories. Understanding these accessories empowers your team to overcome the toughest agile challenges. Attendees will be able to explain how using the PMIACP model empowers them to make long-term project estimations in an agile environment. 5:30-6:00pm: Networking/Bookstore 19 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 7:00-8:00am: Registration/Networking/Bookstore Workshop #2: Concurrent Sessions 8:00-11:30am Full Morning Sessions Ginger Levin: Embracing and Exploiting Change as a Program or Project Professional As project professionals our focus is to minimize change especially in scope, schedule, budget, and quality; however, change is constant in our lives, and a new view of it at the portfolio, program, and project levels is required. While we must be excellent in managing change when it occurs, we also must take a different view of it and embrace and exploit it so it leads to greater benefits and opportunities. We must change the focus from one who resists change to being a change agent recognizing the business value changes can have in our organization. This interactive workshop involves how we can refocus and implement changes in a positive manner with guidelines for success. How does it relate?: PMI’s Managing Change in Organization’s – A Practice Guide emphasizes change management is an essential capability in portfolio, program, and project management, and since strategic changes in organizations occur because of programs and projects, successful organizations hen have people who can effectively lead change. David Dirks: LEAN—SIX SIGMA and Project Management This workshop will cover information comparable to the material taught to a Lean - Six Sigma Yellow Belt. The high level notion is “Management by Fact”. There are very few places PM’s can go that do not require at least a conversational knowledge of these tools and concepts. Richard Brenner: Decision-Making for Team Leaders On 14 December 1911, four men led by Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole. Thirty-five days later, Robert F. Scott and four others followed. As historical drama, this story is interesting enough, but for organizational leaders and managers, the story is fascinating. Lessons abound. Effective group decision-making requires far more than knowing how to organize a discussion or take a vote. In this workshop we explore both the ingredients of good decision-making, and the obstacles to good decision-making. We examine methods for generating, sorting through, and selecting options; typical failure modes of group decisions; and the biases that make rational decision-making so challenging for individuals and groups. 20 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 Cont. Tony Child: “Better Than Average” What is average? During this workshop, we will discuss the importance of understanding the definition of average and the skills needed to be better than average. If something is ‘average,’ it usually constitutes something that is ordinary, not very special, lost in the mix, or insignificant. In the world we live in today, we test, train, and teach to the average. We have the potential to be much more than average yet there are too many around us who are leading average lives. People who see themselves as ordinary, not very special, or lost in the mix. Whether it’s work, home, or other, if you want to reach a higher level of your potential, please join me in this highly impactful workshop. Workshop #2: Concurrent Sessions 8:00-9:45am Split Morning Sessions Mark Hehl: A “Sure Fire” Way to Ensure Schedule Performance! Project Managers are usually confronted with situations and events that have a negative effect on the established schedule and they are still expected to bring the project in on time. One proven method to improve schedule compliance is to employ process mapping methodology to selected processes. This analytical improvement technique provides project teams with an avenue to reduce the time required for a selected process without reducing quality. Jessica Soroky: Born to be a ScrumMaster—Living in a Project Manager’s World There is a moment in everyone’s life where they find that one thing they were meant for. For some people that might be the moment they meet their other half, for others it was the moment they stumbled upon the career path they were always meant for. Either way – or if you’re lucky enough to have both – these moments feel like your soul is lit on fire and passion and excitement are hard to constrain. This is a tale of a journey from my moment, falling into the world of Agile and Scrum, through the realization that MOST companies are waterfall eccentric and how I learned to live in a Project Manager’s world while still allowing my soul to burn bright. If you are a project manager trying to decide to jump into Agile or are already in the Agile world this talk is an opportunity to learn new tools and tricks to creating the environment you desire, over conforming to the environment that currently exists. 21 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 Cont. Workshop #2: Concurrent Sessions 10:00-11:30am Split Morning Sessions V. Lee Hanson: Powerful & Accurate Agile Estimation—Estimation Mastery in Minutes! Leadership on projects have long struggled with the ability to accurately forecast the size, scope, and cost of a project. Traditional methods often run past the point of contingency and become less predictable as they increase in size or go through scope variance. This session is intended to give you the needed tools to make your estimates more accurate than they have ever been before so that you can focus on increased productivity and blue sky initiatives. Chris Gardner: Emotional Intelligence Come learn how being emotionally intelligent makes you a better business leader. There is ample research and data indicating that the emotional and social intelligence of a leader greatly enhances their ability to influence, inspire, and lead their organization. Further, emotional intelligence skills are not fixed traits, but rather they are competencies that can be learned. As we become aware of how emotions guide our thoughts and behaviors and we practice skills that allow us to manage those emotions, we’ll see our ability to influence other to grow. 11:30-12:00pm: Lunch & Networking 22 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 Cont. 12:00-1:20pm: Lunch Keynote: Spencer Horn: The Power of Responsibility Learn How to Take 100% Responsibility for the Result in Your Business and Life. Be inspired to be more effective in your roles, by focusing on three things: Taking 100% personal responsibility for results in your life. Create a culture of responsibility, a culture of accountability; secondly, do the little things consistently; third, understand the power of your thoughts. Focus on results and desired change. You will learn about how the brain works and how to unleash its power in achieving their goals. You will commit to taking control of the outcomes in their lives. This is a “wake-up call” to seasoned leaders to get off “auto pilot”! Learn some ways we prevent ourselves from making desired changes in our roles and how to eliminate them. Awareness of the impact of emotional intelligence Participants will learn how to effectively influence and mentor emerging leaders. 1:20-1:30pm Networking/Bookstore Session #2: Concurrent Sessions 1:30-2:30pm Rob DeLange: Multipliers Are you a genius or a genius maker? We’ve all had experience with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drains intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always needs to be the smartest person in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, who diminish talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the capabilities of the people around them. When these leaders walk into a room, light bulbs go off over people’s heads; ideas flow and problems get solved. These are the leaders who inspire others to stretch themselves beyond their current capacities. These are the Multipliers. And the world needs more of them—especially in the project management realm where leaders are expected to do more with less. What could you and your project team accomplish with access to all the intelligence that sits inside it? 23 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 Cont. Keith Johnson: Lean Construction Projects Application of lean principles to construction projects provides an excellent means to gain greater control of project constraints (schedule, quality, scope, budget, resources, risk, etc.) as well as clearing an effective avenue to gain market differentiation for your organization. Based on literature and experience, this session considers opportunities to close gaps in current construction practice through adaptation of lean concepts. Ian McCracken: Finding a New Job Project Manager Style: The Devil is in the Details Searching for and securing a good new job can be extremely challenging and, at times, discouraging. Approaching it with the right attitude and putting forth a focused, constant, and detailed effort is critical. Just applying online and hoping someone will come to you is how your competitors may search but not you! By searching in the right manner, you will be able to be logically selective in finding the job that best fits with your skill sets, interests, salary level, and abilities. Mike Berry: Introducing the New Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA) Certification This workshop will explain the high-profile content and techniques included in the new PMI-PBA certification and talk about how it complements the existing PMP Body of Knowledge. Attendees will be able to explain the prerequisites and scope of the PMI-PBA, and be able to describe how the PBA skillset compliments the PMP skillset. Session #2 Concurrent Sessions 1:30-3:50pm Full Afternoon Sessions Brian Rabon: How to build Teams That Will Walk Through Fire to Help You Succeed: Creating Fully Engaged Project Teams If you asked a colleague to describe your leadership style would they say, “The greatest thing that I have learned from watching you and working with you is how to motivate and engage team members. Your approach to servant leadership is highly effective and extremely rare. You have the unique ability to simultaneously be their friend and their equal while still being their leader who they respect and follow. Every member of your team (including me) would walk through fire to help you succeed.” That’s what Michael Bell, Founding Partner at The Modern Brand, recently said about me. Attend this keynote and leave with 3 Agile leadership secrets that will have your team members saying the same things about your leadership style. 24 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 Cont. Aileen Ellis: Wouldn’t It Be Great If Stakeholders Came With a User’s Manual? Until your project stakeholders come with a user’s manual, there is the Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI). The SDI® is based on Relationship Awareness — a learning model for effectively and accurately understanding the motive behind behavior. When people recognize the unique motivation of themselves and others, they greatly enhance their ability to communicate more effectively AND handle conflict more productively. Discover how your own motivation and values influence your behavior Gain a better understanding of the motivation and behavior of others Analyze your personal response to conflict – and make more effective choices as a result. Learn ways to anticipate, prevent and manage conflict situations in your life Capture relationship-building techniques that you will be able to apply immediately Select better choices in relationships and increase effectiveness by identifying your personal strengths as well as overdone strengths Session #3: Concurrent Sessions 2:40-3:50pm David Dirks: Failure Proofing Projects The material deals with all the critical aspects of project management that are not part of the PMBOK. Sample topics include: managing up, corporate diplomacy, communications, team management, setting the environment for success. The high level take away is that we almost always know when a project is headed for failure, but choices are made which ultimately cause failure. Once we as project managers understand the real power we have, we can better manage our success. Nicholas Smith & Taylor Drage: Operational Excellence Through Industrialized Design The path towards Operational Excellence begins with design. The design should not be focused simply on process or product to deliver quality, but should encompass all service layers. Our core service layers are: Product/ Service Offerings, Service Levels, Process Architecture, Data Architecture, Systems Architecture, and Internal Organization and Partnership. Our Project Managers and Architects harmonize these capabilities to focus on the needs of our clients with efficiency and risk management. The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. is a leading global financial services firm providing investment banking, securities and investment management services to a substantial and diversified client base that includes corporations, financial institutions, governments and high-net-worth individuals. 25 May 13th Agenda—Day 2 Cont. Reed Shell: The Agilest Metric Toolbox The advent of Agile in project management has created challenges in using metrics to better understand, control, evaluate and predict project outcomes. Traditional project management metrics often do not fit in the Agile model. In this presentation a Goal/Question/Metric approach will be used to assist in better defining scrum or agile metrics. It will then be utilized as a method to gather metrics fro the 12 points of the Agile Manifesto to identify metrics for the Agilest Toolbox. Ginger Levin: Knowledge Transfer in a Complex World The goal of this presentation is to describe approaches to best incorporate knowledge management and knowledge transfer into the daily lives of program and project professionals to foster success as knowledge transfer is viewed as a key way to reduce the talent gap. In an ideal state knowledge transfer permeates the organization as it helps to minimize complexity. Too often the emphasis is on tools and techniques, while for success knowledge transfer must be part of the program and project life cycles. This interactive presentation describes challenges and opportunities and presents some guidelines to consider and apply in your work, changing the focus from ‘knowledge is power’ to knowledge transfer is power’. How does it relate? PMI’s Pulse of the Profession, 2014, focuses on talent management noting successful organizations are ones with ongoing training, a formal process to develop project management competency, and a defined career path. It also supports PMI’s Thought Leadership Series: ‘Spotlight on Success Developing Talent for Strategic Impact’ (November 2014). 3:50-4:00pm: Afternoon Break/Network/Bookstore 4:00-5:15pm: Closing Keynote: Noelle Pikus Pace: Focused! A lifelong athlete who transitioned from track and field to skeleton in high school, it took Noelle 15 very determined years to reach the Olympic podium, but she did! Along the way she became one of the most decorated American athletes in the history of the sport, and was the first American woman to become World Champion and to win the overall World Cup Championship. 5:15-5:30pm: Closing Remarks/Raffle/Recognition 5:30-6:00pm: Networking/Bookstore 26 Full Listing of Keynote and Workshop Speakers: Bios Follow Aileen Ellis Joel Erickson Reed Shell Brian Rabon John Lee Richard Brenner Bryan Tew John Stenbeck Rob DeLange Chip Eichelberger Keith Johnson Spencer Horn Chris Gardner Liz Price Steve Ostermiller David Dirks Mark Hehl Taylor Drage David Nelson Mike Berry Tony Child Ginger Levin Mugugappan Chettiar V. Mother. Author. Motivational Speaker. Product Spokesperson/Model. Business Owner. Philanthropist. On February 15, 2014, Noelle PIkus Pace crossed the finish line of the Sochi Olympic Games putting a dramatic ending, and an emphatic exclamation point, on a 15 year journey of chasing the Olympic podium. The Olympic medal that she and her family, together, had chased around the world, for years, was finally theirs. Noelle leapt into the stands, into the arms of her husband, and into the hearts of America in one of the iconic, heartfelt moments of the XXII Olympic Winter Games. A standout high school track athlete, Noelle’s track coach suggested she try bobsled. She did, but soon thereafter got on a skeleton sled and fell in love with the high speed, head-first, rocket-ride most certainly not for the faint of heart. Pace blossomed as a slider and years later became the best in the world. With the 2006 Olympics coming into focus on the horizon, Pace was the gold medal favorite. Just months prior to the Olympics, Noelle was severely injured in a training accident, suffering a compound leg fracture. Despite a valiant effort to return to health in time for the Olympics she was unable to make it back. Noelle stepped back from the sport and started a family with her husband, Janson. As the 2010 Olympics approached, Pace got the itch to try again and she embarked on long stints to Europe, leaving behind her husband and baby girl. By 2010 Noelle had returned to world class form and, with her family by her side, she took one more shot at Olympic hardware. Heartbreakingly, she missed by one tenth of a one second. Noelle finished 4th. She smiled, as she always does, and retired from the sport. Shortly thereafter, in 2011, Noelle and Janson welcomed the birth of their son, and looked forward to continuing to grow their family. Several months following a personal tragedy in 2012, her husband Janson suggested she take one more shot at her place in Olympic history. They decided they would travel as a family on this one last shot at the Olympic podium. The cost and challenges of traveling the world wide competition circuit were enormous but they faced every challenge with a smile and as a family. Janson, an engineer by trade, built Noelle’s sled, and on that magic night in Sochi she rode that sled like a supermom on a mission. Finally, at long last, their dream had come true. 30 Workshop Speakers Aileen Ellis Please See Keynote Speaker Write Up Brian Rabon Brian M.
