The Employment Situation of Young Single Parents from Disadvantaged Neighbourhoods Project Leaders: Suzanne Speak Summary This working paper draws on three earlier research projects carried out by the author: Young Single Mother: barriers to independent living (JRF) Young Single Father: their participation in fatherhood (JRF) Changing the way we do things here: the Cruddas Park Experience. (The Baring Foundation) The interviews were all conducted in Newcastle. It uses the voices of young people interviewed for these studies to highlight young single parents’ aspirations, difficulties and experiences in relation to training and employment. It concludes with a broader discussion of some of the issues raised.
