SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014 (Noon – 10 p.m.)

Various Locations
Experience what it’s like to be a student at UC San Diego and sit in on a class. Please allow UC San Diego
students to be seated before you take a seat, since space may be limited. Avoid going into the room if you see a
test being given. A list of available classes to attend will be available at check-in (or ask your student).
Climb Time with Outback Adventures 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Climbing Center, Canyon View Pool
NOTE: Due to limited capacity, this event is offered on a first-come, first-served basis with your Family Weekend
badge.
The UC San Diego Climbing Center is a custom-built indoor facility on campus that offers a wide range of routes
for all levels of climbers. Whether it’s your first climbing experience, or you are a seasoned veteran, you are
sure to find a multitude of exciting climbs to challenge you. Check it out! (The Outback Adventures Climbing
Center is happy to provide a climbing experience for family members 7 years of age and older. All participants
must sign a waiver and parents/guardians must be present to sign a waiver and supervise minor participants).
Zipline and Family Challenge with Outback Adventures 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
UCSD Challenge Course, Grove Reserve near Spanos Track
NOTE: Due to limited capacity, this event is offered on a first-come, first-served basis with your Family Weekend
badge. Sneakers and closed-toed shoes are mandatory at the challenge course.
Is your family ready for some adventure and challenge? Come check out the UCSD Challenge Course. After
gearing up, your family will ascend the Odyssey Course. Once your heart slows down a bit, you will have a
chance to work together to complete a fun family challenge 25 feet off the ground. The exciting zipline is your
method of travel to return to the earth. All activities are facilitated by trained UCSD staff. (The UCSD Challenge
Course is happy to provide a challenge course experience for family members weighing at between 75-300 lbs.
All participants must sign a waiver and parents/guardians must be present to sign a waiver and supervise minor
participants).
Undergraduate Research Poster Presentations 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

UC San Diego undergraduate students are extremely accomplished researchers! Come learn more about the
innovative and cutting-edge research being conducted by our very own undergraduate students. Dr. David Artis,
Dean of Undergraduate Research Initiatives will be your host as students present their most current research.
Triton Family Comedy Nite! 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Matthews Quad (by Student Services Center)
Join the UCSD Recreation staff and your fellow Triton Family members and start your Family Weekend morning
with a session of yoga! Please wear comfortable clothing. Mats will be provided on a first-come, first-served
basis.
College Connections Beginning at 10:30 a.m.
 Revelle College
(Time: 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
Location: Revelle Plaza
Join the Provost and Revelle College staff members as we host a special program designed for families
and their students as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Activities include engaging speakers, student
performances, and time to chat with student leaders and staff. We welcome you to take advantage of
this great opportunity to spend time with your student and reconnect with the members of the Revelle
College community.

Muir Family Picnic
John Muir College
(Time: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
Location: Ledden Auditorium (10:30am – 11:15am) and Muir Quad (11:30am – 12:30pm)
Please join Muir College for a picnic lunch complete with student entertainment! This fun event will
allow for families to reconnect with their student and the Muir College staff while socializing with other
Muir College families. Please note that lunch will be served from 11:30am – 12:30pm.

Backyard Brunch with Thurgood Marshall College (TMC)
Thurgood Marshall College

Location: Marshall Field
Bring the whole family and come hungry! Relax and socialize with your student, other families, and
college staff while enjoying a delicious brunch served in TMC’s own backyard: Marshall Field. Students
and families can also participate in an entertaining game designed to playfully challenge how well
students and their families know (or don’t know) each other. Don’t miss out on the food, the fun, and
the prizes!


Please join us for a great time and a relaxing lunch as we showcase the best of ERC’s student
scholarship, leadership, and community service – including samples of students’ research and reports on
their overseas experiences. You will get a sample of our global talent and cultural diversity through
activities such as student performances, poster sessions, and social opportunities to meet other ERC
members. We will also have tours of Ellie’s Garden and other parts of our beautiful ERC campus.


Please join Sixth College students, faculty and staff for a glimpse of what makes this college uniquely
Sixth! From a rousing game of family feud to a chance to take a picture with one of the unique Spirit of
the Masters art pieces, we look forward to showcasing the best parts of being a Sixer. Come get a taste
of what Chocolate Festival will have to offer. We will end the program with an opportunity to eat a meal
at Foodworx, our Sixth College dining facility.

 The Nuances of the Zombie Brain, Presented by UCSD Professor Bradley Voytek (Price Center Theater)
Session 1
The brain makes us who we are: every thought you've had, every emotion you've felt, and every hope
you've dreamed arises from interactions between the hundreds of billions of cells that make up that
three pounds of tissue in your head. How do these cells communicate? What happens when that
communication goes wrong? And why are those cells so tasty to zombies?! In this tongue-in-cheek
presentation, Professor Bradley Voytek will introduce you to the nuances of the zombie brain and
discuss what exactly is going on inside the head of the ravenous undead that make them crave human
brains.

The Reality of Med School (Price Center East Ballroom)
Session 1
Hear from a panel of UC San Diego alumni who are currently attending the UCSD School of Medicine.
They’ll share their decision to attend medical school, the application process, and what life is like as a
first or second year medical student.

Your Well-being: Your Success (The Zone, located next to Jamba Juice)
Sessions 1 & 2
Visit The Zone – UCSD’s lounge for student well-being – and learn about the many wellness resources
available to help your student lead a healthy and balanced life at UCSD! Enjoy healthy food samples,
therapy dogs, free tea, relaxing crafts and more!

First in the Family: First Generation Parents & Families** (Price Center East Forum)
Session 2
First in the Family is for parents and families of first-generation college students and is designed to
introduce important resources and information at UC San Diego. We will share helpful tips and

resources designed to help your first generation student succeed. We will also discuss what to expect in
your child’s first year of college. Additionally, First in the Family serves as an opportunity for families to
establish a network of support.

Are you curious about the California life style? Wondering what life is like at UC San Diego? Meet
current students who are not from California and the college staff dedicated to serving and improving
the student experience of all non-resident students.

Study Abroad (Price Center West Ballroom)
Session 2
Your student should study abroad! Join the Programs Abroad Office to learn how to study abroad can fit
into any academic major, foster personal development and intercultural connectivity, and be an
affordable, smart investment that will add international experience to a résumé. Study abroad is often a
life-changing highlight to college – your student shouldn’t miss out!

The Balancing Act - UCSD Recreation (Price Center West Bear Room)
Session 2
With the increasing pressure of academics, many stressed out students forget the importance of
recreation for physical and psychological wellbeing. UC San Diego has one of the largest Recreation
programs in the nation. Find out all the ways your student can get involved in our great programs–
whether it be toughing the wilderness with Outback Adventures, getting competitive and meeting new
friends on a Sports Club or Intramural team, getting in shape with FitLife, or learning a new skill with Rec
Classes…there is something for everyone!

Catch the shuttle to the San Diego Zoo. Check your Family Weekend program if you decide to drive there on
your own. See you at the Zoo!
UCSD Night at the Zoo (San Diego Zoo & Dinner)
Zoo Time 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., Dinner & Night Time Zoo 5:00 – 8 p.m.
Whether you joined us last year or this is your first time visiting the world-famous San Diego Zoo, it is sure to be
a wonderful experience! After the official zoo hours of operation, the zoo will be exclusively open for the entire
Triton Family for a special one-of-a-kind UCSD Night at the Zoo! Meet some animals up close and personal,
while enjoying the evening with the entire family! Dinner is on us, adventure is on you! See you there!
Please note that a ticket to the zoo, as well as an exclusive “UCSD Night at the Zoo” dinner and after-hours event
ticket is included with every Family Weekend registration.

Campus Recreation Facilities Throughout The Weekend
Various Locations
Enjoy access to all campus recreation facilities during the weekend. This includes RIMAC (weight room, cardio
equipment, racquetball/squash courts, locker rooms, etc.), the Canyonview Aquatic Center (two outdoor 50
meter pools), tennis courts, Main Gym Complex, and track. Visit http://recreation.ucsd.edu/ for facilities’ hours
of operation.
Mission Bay Aquatic Center (MBAC) 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

While you’re visiting campus you can take the short trip down to Mission Bay, San Diego’s aquatic playground,
for a free rental of a stand up paddle board or kayak at UCSD Recreation’s Mission Bay Aquatic Center (MBAC).
The rental includes a short orientation, so no prior experience is required. The MBAC is UCSD’s gateway to
Mission Bay and offers classes, events, and rentals in sailing, surfing, paddling, rowing, and windsurfing. A
perfect place to take a break from the books and get out on the water!
