TAUNTON Prep School is one of the top performing rugby schools of our kind in the country.
Recent success have been recognised on the national website Schoolsport.
The website shows various performance league tables and the All Comers League
(below) is where teams are awarded league points for total wins, tries scored and the standard of the opposition played.
TPS has been topping two of the age groups - Under 13A and Under 11B - and placed second in two of the others -
Under 13C and Under 11A.
TPS Director of Sport, Shaun
Winsor, said: “What is so pleasing is that the strength of rugby is not isolated to a specific team or year group.
“This is a great achievement and is a credit to all pupils in all teams and the staff for their hard work in games lessons during the week.
“This proves that the results will always reflect the levels of effort put into training over those three games sessions.” n CLICK

WE were treated this week to a moving and fitting Remembrance
Service under the leadership of our Chaplain Matthew
Dietz.
The most significant element for me was the way in which our pupils, with guidance and explanation, were able to reflect in such a mature and dignified manner.
We were delighted to welcome Mr Stanley
Coleman, a veteran of
World War II, to speak to the children about his experiences.
Remembrance is a symbolic and significant act, and the service is one which Matthew and I would like to open to more parents and friends of the school to attend in the years to come, bringing the community together.
Sometimes things happen behind the scenes without parental involvement, and
I thought you might like to know that our annual
Governor and Management
Day has been taking place today (Friday).
Each part of the school will be presenting and discussing progress in our academic provision, and it is an exciting forum to learn about what each section of the school does, and also identify ways in which we can further develop the links between us.
Looking ahead to the new week, we look forward to welcoming you to the
Michaelmas Concert on
Monday night. With over
150 pupils participating, it promises to be a performance to be remembered!
Have a good weekend.
REMINDER TO
PARENTS
We have been asked to remind parents not to park on the drive outside
Fairwater House
(opposite the Prep
School entrance).
Although we appreciate parking can be difficult this is a private drive for Housemaster only and access is required at all times. Thank-you.

THERE have been many poignant moments as Taunton School has paused and remembered this week those who have lost their lives in Conflict – particularly on this centenary of the Great War.
The Boarding community came together with a number of Old Tauntonians on Sunday morning for the traditional
Remembrance Service in the
Chapel. This was followed by an
Act of Remembrance at the War
Memorial (the Science Building), where the Last Post and Reveille were sounded.
Chapel Services this week have also focussed on Remembrance.
The CCF Colours were brought into Chapel on each of Monday,
Tuesday and
Wednesday mornings for the Senior School and Prep School day pupils to witness, and the Chaplain spoke of his own experience of being an ‘agent for
God’s love’ in the Iraq war in 2003.
The Senior and Prep
School Choirs sang ‘We
Will Remember Them’ and Mr Brown (School
Archivist) prepared some words about the four (out of 168) Old Tauntonians who died in the first year of the Great War,
1914.
A significant highlight for the Prep and Pre-Prep children was hearing from Mr Coleman’s grandfather, Stanley, age 92, who recounted some of his memories of serving in the Navy in the
Second World War. “Wear your poppy with pride” he told us all,
“and always remember”. We will indeed Stanley, we will remember them.
On Armistice Day itself
(Tuesday) a good number of staff and pupils gathered at the new
‘Trench Bench’ in Densham Court to mark the two-minute silence at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, and Dr Newton read out the names of the four once more.
The Prep School all gathered in their playground at the same time with their Headmaster, and they too fell silent for two minutes as the echoes of the Last Post were heard from the Senior School just a few hundred metres away…
TPS and TPPS also held their own
Act of Remembrance ceremony on
Wednesday at the War Memorial.
Rev Matthew Dietz
IN addition to partaking in the Act of Remembrance to commemorate a Centenary since of the start of WWI the children in TPPS and TPS have also been involved with the remembrance in their curriculum lessons.
The children have studied the ‘In
Flanders Fields’ or
‘Dulce et Decorum
Est’ poems and other activities have ranged from looking at the structure of a trench, to personal experiences from war veterans; remembrance songs in Hymn Practice to trying to pass a ball in
PE 100 times making reference to why that number is significant.
The children have approached every activity with interest and maturity asking pertinent questions accordingly.

A WWI COMMEMORATIVE concert will take place in the Chapel on Tuesday,
November 18th from 7.00-8:15pm.
The concert is free and there will be a retiring collection for the 2015 Choir tour to Boston for those who wish to donate.
The music is all composed during
WWI or directly relates to the war - from
The Girls Choir AVE singing Elgar, to
Wind Band playing Holst's The Planets,
Orchestra performing the music from
War Horse and Chapel Choir singing John
Ireland.
The concert will end with our 6th form choir singing Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Christmas Carols with strings and organ, a wonderful piece written just prior to the outbreak of war, looking towards Christmas.
All pupils and staff are welcome to attend for what is sure to be a memorable evening. Drinks will be served in the Old Library following the concert. Mark Cracknell

DESPITE the dark nights and the wet weather, spirits remain high in Thone.
Along side the weekly activities of table tennis, cookery, swimming and dodge ball, the boarders are enjoying the start of the Christmas festivities by making their own Christmas decorations in Arts and Crafts. They have also prepared boxes to hand in on Monday for
Operation Christmas
Child, as well as finding time to host their very own
‘Thone’s Got Talent’ night.
The weekend was spent, spending their pennies in Taunton and participating in a House Dodge ball competition.
This weekend they look forward to taking Mrs Marshall on at the ‘Race Trac’ and Mr Hughes and
Mrs Mortimer at Ten
Pin bowling.

A SPECIAL ceremony took place at lunchtime today (Friday) to mark the work the outstanding contribution made to our school by Mr David Taylor.
Governors and Senior Staff looked on as he planted a Silver
Birch in his honour on Densham
Green.
Mr Taylor stepped down earlier this year after 16 years as Bursar. However, he is still very much part of the school community as he has continued as Clerk to the Governors.
Prior to the planting, tributes were paid to his work by our
Chair of Governors, Mrs Jane
Barrie, and Headmaster, Dr John
Newton.

YEAR 2 had a “brilliant”,
“awesome” and ”fabulous” day visiting the science museum
@tBristol last Friday.
Despite a delayed arrival, thanks to a wobbly wing mirror on our coach(!), we squeezed lots of learning into our day.
We explored forces, electricity and sound using the interactive displays and hands-on exhibits.
One of our favourite activities was imagining that we were a baby inside a giant Mummy’s tummy, listening to talking and music from the outside world!
After lunch, we were treated to a “magical” and “amazing” Space
Adventure in the Planetarium, learning about planets, nebulae and constellations.
“It was the best trip ever!” exclaimed Seth!

IT seems as if winter has finally arrived.
Despite the wet and windy weather there has been a number of sporting success stories this week.
A number of the Year 7 and 8 girls had their county netball trials and the U13’s won the Sherborne 7's rugby festival.
There was also IAPS hockey with both the U12 and U13’s involved.
It was also good to see all of the Year 3’s at Kingshall on
Monday with the boys playing some tag rugby and the girls hockey.

A VERY late (sorry) congratulations to all pupils who represented Taunton in the regional qualifiers at Millfield on Sunday,
October 19th.
All pupils were excellent in their run and swims. Outstanding results for
Macey Barrett (U10) and George Tester
(U14) who won their age categories. This put them 14th and 27th in the country.
Pictured are the three members of the
U12 team who won the silver medal in the team event.

Under 13 South West IAPS
Tournament
On: Monday, November 10th
2014
Venue: Away
THE newly constructed U13 team set off to Street in a positive frame of mind.
An early win against
Sherbourne 3-2 did a lot for our confidence.
Our second match saw us against old rivals Millfield, who we knew would be strong. We defended very well in the first half and in the second began to attack.
However, this opened up our defence and allowed Millfield chances to score, and we lost
2-0.
Our third match against
Hallgrove was dominated by
Taunton. However, we were caught napping at a quick short corner and were left 1-0 down at half time. Luckily we kept positive and ended up winning 2-1.
The next match saw us against Perrott Hill. Again we played some positive hockey and scored early. In the second half we sat back and
Perrott pushed us and the score ended 1-1.
As we entered the last match we realised that as
Sherbourne and Millfield had both won all but one match we would struggle to qualify for the quarter finals. We did win the last match 2-0, but sadly missed out on a place in the knock out stage.
Credit should go to all the girls including the subs who were positive all day.
Special mention to Anna
Parkinson for some great goals, Mabel Pyne for some very tenacious play and
Sharon Wang who did well at the back for the first time.
Well done girls.

Under 12 IAPS regional qualifier
On: Monday, November 10th
Venue: Millfield
THE U12 team, having been looking forward to playing a tournament together, were excited and confident heading into this tournament.
This gave the team a good start, beating Clifton with a convincing 3-0 victory. This continued into the second match, beating Forres Sandle
Manor 5-0.
The third match against
Millfield was always going to be a challenge and although we had just as many striking opportunities, their goalkeeper proved too strong and the final score was 2-0 to
Millfield.
Having had a longer break and the opportunity to watch the other teams play, we knew that the next match would also be no less demanding than the previous.
Beaudesert played some
good passing hockey whilst our teams heads were down, and, taking full advantage of our poorer performance, slotted three goals passed our keeper.
Knowing that the next two matches had to be wins to stand any chance of progressing, the team picked themselves up and beat
All Hallows’ 2-0 and Truro
High 2-1. Unfortunately, no upsets in the other matches confirmed Millfield and
Beaudesert as the the clear
1st and 2nd placed teams who progress to the national finals with Taunton Prep 3rd.
A disappointment for all but some good performances to be proud of and areas highlighted to be improved in preparation for the U13 competition.
Well done Annabelle Lewes,
Freya Tyler, Martha Mileham,
Mimi Lecompte, Izzy Glazer,
Flora Collier, Poppy Hutchins,
Emily Lawton and Izzy Morris.

Taunton Preparatory School Boys - U11B vs Millfield Preparatory School
On: Saturday, November 8th
Venue: Away
WE started the game slowly and Millfield took advantage, breaking away to score the first try.. It wasn't until we realised we were only as good as the sum of our parts that we started to find our rhythm.
We developed well throughout the match and scored some good team tries.
Rather than mention the scorers I will give a line to the boys who were in the thick of things and made just as much contribution.
Firstly, Taylor Slade who had his hand on the ball for a try with Adam L-W but who gave the try to Adam because he was playing against his friends from his old school!
Taylor had a great game and so did
Phoenix Carroll who made some great runs and was always in support.
Edward King made some super runs and tackles, Rory O'Carroll was always there in the thick of things and Ben Jones had some great touches, none better than his wonderful run near the end that set up the final try.
Well done boys!
Mr Manners
Under 13 Sevens Rugby
ON Thursday ten pupils travelled to
Sherborne for their annual invitational
Sevens.
The opening game was against
Hazlegrove and although TPS won the game 17-12 Hazlegrove played the better 7’s rugby.
Their next matches were all wins against All Hallows, Kingshall and
Sherborne B. As each game progressed the level of TPS rugby improved. This put TPS top of their group and they then met Sunninghill in the semi finals (who finished 2nd in their group).
TPS scored three early tries and looked comfortable playing up the slope. Maybe over confidence playing down the slope and some wrong decisions in the second half opened the door to Sunninghill to score an early try. TPS then hung on to a 19-14 victory with some outstanding defence.
The final game was a rematch of the opening match against Hazlegrove
(who beat the winners of the other group, Sherborne A, in their semi final). Although the game involved the same two teams the match was totally different. TPS saved their best 7’s until the final and, on this occasion, totally outplayed a very strong opposition.
The final score line of 31-0 showed how well the team played. All of the team should feel proud of their performances as they were all involved in every single game.

ELOISE Winsor
(Yr8) and Freya
Tyler (Yr7) have both been selected for the
Somerset Netball
U14 Satellite
Academy.
This academy is for netball players who have been identified as having the potential to play netball at a higher level in the future.
The aim of the Satellite academy is to give players the quality individual coaching support they need to help them achieve their full potential.
The sessions give players education on how to train with regards to fitness, skills work and goal setting, as well as many other aspects necessary to become an elite athlete. This is a great achievement for both players.
Current
Taunton School and former TPS students Ellie-May
Vohra, Megan
Conabeare,
Eleri Brown and
Jasmine Walker were also selected for the academy.

Earrings: There seems to be a recent rise in the number of girls having their ears recently pierced.
Can we remind pupils that if they wish to get this done then they must bring their own tape and expect to cover these earrings during all games and PE lessons.
Otherwise all earrings have to be removed for all practical sport lessons.
It is both unhygienic and unproductive for pupils to try and return to lessons caped in mud with wet underclothing beneath their school uniform.
Although we allow time for a quick shower it seems unfortunate that a number of pupils prefer to try and not take this option.
Showering: As the winter seems to be finally here the need to shower is becoming more prevalent.
All pupils are required to have a towel with them to shower after strenuous exercise or after coming into contact with mud. It would also be worth bringing in some spare underwear and a plastic bag to deposit these wet and dirty clothes into. www.tauntonschool.co.uk
Kit Check: We regularly get pupils to check each other’s kit for name badges and will continue to do this over the coming weeks. It still seems that named kit is going missing.
Can we please ask anyone reading this to check their son and daughter’s kit for items they may had accidentally picked up and placed in their bags.
Having all pupils in their perfect matching kit with matching kit bags
means unfortunately missing kit will always be a problem. However can we also ask pupils to be more vigilant with their belongings and not to leave items strewn all over the changing rooms or not returned to their lockers.
If items are missing then please check the lockers rooms and lost property. PE staff regularly have emails about lost property to then spend their break times searching to find items sitting in the locker rooms.
Fixtures: Please can we remind all pupils that full tracksuits must be taken to every fixture. On occasions pupils will travel to and from fixtures in their tracksuits. There is also an expectation that all pupils attend match teas after a fixture.
