NAPOLEON BONAPARTE UNIT 5 FRENCH REVOLUTION AND ROMANTICISM NAPOLEON TAKES CONTROL • By 1799, the French army was winning battles against the invading countries. • Napoleon was able to use his influence over the army to overthrow the directory and give control to three consuls (1799). NAPOLEON TAKES CONTROL • As first consul, Napoleon was able to get Austria to surrender and Great Britain and Russia to agree to peace by 1802. • Napoleon became so popular that the people elected him consul for life. EMPEROR NAPOLEON • Napoleon acted like a Roman Emperor and used his military success and leading ability to control the people. • He was even able to get himself crowned Emperor in 1804. EMPEROR NAPOLEON • 1805-1810 Napoleon conquered much of Europe and gave control of different areas to his relatives. • Next, Napoleon looked to expand the French Empire into Russia. NAPOLEON’S DOWNFALL • In June of 1812, Napoleon began to invade Russia. • The French forces were able to keep forcing the Russians to retreat farther back until they came to Moscow. NAPOLEON’S DOWNFALL • Moscow had been emptied and even had parts set on fire to make it unusable. • The Russians then attacked the unprotected French forces and forced them out of the city. • With resources running out, and winter approaching, Napoleon was forced to return home. NAPOLEON’S DOWNFALL • During the retreat, many troops died from starvation, freezing to death, and attacks from Russian horseback troops. • Most of Napoleon’s army had been destroyed in this failed attempt to invade Russia. NAPOLEON’S DOWNFALL • This humiliating loss led to many countries in Europe working together to invade and take over Paris. • In 1814 Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba and Louis XVIII was placed on the French Throne. THE END OF NAPOLEON • Feb 26th, 1815 Napoleon manages to escape from Elba and return to France. • The French army would rally around Napoleon, but they would be defeated by a British General named Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo.
